  • Ac-dc power conversion can either be done with two separate converter stages or with a single converter stage. Two-stage ac-dc converters, however, can be costly and complex, while the performance of single-stage converters is compromised due to a reduced number of components. Several researchers have therefore proposed adding some sort of auxiliary circuit consisting of a second switch and some passive elements to single-stage converters to improve their performance. Although these modified single-stage converters may have two converters, they are not two-stage converters as they do not have two separate and independently controlled converters that are always operating to convert power from one form to another. In this paper, the operation of ac-dc single-stage converters is first reviewed and their strengths and weaknesses are noted. The operation of several modified single-stage converters, including one proposed by the authors, is then discussed, and the paper concludes by presenting experimental results that confirm the feasibility of the proposed converter.

  • Ac-dc PWM single-stage converters that integrate the PFC and dc-dc conversion functions in a single switching converter have been proposed to try to minimize the cost and complexity associated with implementing two separate and independent switch-mode converters. In this paper, two simple ac-dc single-stage PWM full-bridge converters are considered - one current-fed, the other voltage-fed. The operation of both converters is explained and their properties are noted. Experimental results obtained from simple lab prototypes of both converters are presented, then compared and discussed.

  • Two AC-DC PWM full-bridge converters that can input current to improve input power factor while performing dc-dc conversion are investigated in this paper. Both converters are simple in that they are similar to the standard PWM full-bridge converter with a diode rectifier/LC low-pass filter input, and both can operate with a simple method of PWM control. In the paper, the operation of the converters is explained and their steady-state characteristics are discussed. The feasibility of the converters and their ability to meet EN61000-3-2 Class D Standards for electrical equipment are shown with results obtained from experimental prototypes. The performance of both converters in terms of dc bus voltage level, input power factor and efficiency is compared and discussed.

  • This paper presents a comparative evaluation of various topologies for three-phase power converters using the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation technique. Various switch-mode AC-DC power converters are studied, and their performance with respect to total harmonic distortion (THD), efficiency, power factor and losses are analyzed. The HIL-simulation is implemented in an Altera Cyclone II DE2 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) Board and in the Matlab/Simulink environment. A comparison of the simulation and HIL-simulation results is also provided.

  • In this paper the algorithm which controls output voltage and power factor independently and the algorithm which controls output voltage with fixed unity power factor are compared and analyzed. These algorithms are applied to single-phase AC/DC parallel are applied to single-phase AC/DC parallel converters for a high speed train system. The control characteristic of the algorithms are compared and analyzed with respect to the output voltage and input power factor when system parameters vary.

  • In this paper, a capacitance estimation scheme for DC-link capacitors for single-phase AC/DC PWM converters is proposed. Under the no-load condition, a controlled AC current (30[Hz]) is injected into the input side, which then causes AC voltage ripples at the DC output side. Or, a controlled AC voltage can be directly injected into the DC output side. By extracting the AC voltage/current and power components on the DC output side using digital filters, the capacitance value can be calculated, where the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm is used. The proposed methods can be simply implemented with software only and additional hardware is not required. From the experiment results, a high accuracy estimation of capacitances less than 0.85% has been obtained.

  • Two-stage Power-Factor-Correction (PFC) converters are the most common circuits for drawing sinusoidal and in phase current waveforms from an ac source with a good regulated output voltage. The first stage is a boost PFC converter with average-current-mode control for achieving the near-unity power factor and the second stage is a forward converter with voltage-mode control to regulate the output voltage. Stability analysis and design methods of two-stage PFC converters have previously been discussed using linear models. Recently, new nonlinear phenomena have been detected in pre-regulator boost PFC circuits and a new nonlinear model has been proposed for pre-regulated PFC converters. Therefore, investigation of two-stage PFC converters from the nonlinear viewpoint becomes important because the second stage DC/DC converter adds more complexity to the circuit. So, this paper introduces a study of the stability of two-stage PFC converters. A novel nonlinear model of two-stage PFC converters is proposed. Then, a stability analysis is made based upon this nonlinear model. The high correspondence between the simulated and experimental results confirms our analysis.

  • The high precision of electrical power and energy measurements with wide range of frequency and power factor can be achieved by using the thermo-electrical power comparators. The paper describes the development of a precision power measuring system by using a ac/dc power comparator for measurement of power. Based on a thermal principle, the instrument performs ac-dc transfer for ac power measurements in the range of currents from 0 to 5 $A_{ms}$ , voltages from 0 to 240 $V_{ms}$ , power factors from 0 to 1 and frequencies from 0 to 1000 Hz. Two thermal converters with two heater are used in the functional element of the comparators. The ac-dc transfer accuracy is better than 20 ppm at unity power factor and better than 50 ppm at 0.5 power factor. (author). 8 refs., 5 figs., 3 tabs.

  • The construction of the ITER tokamak machine is ongoing at a 77% process rate to achieve the first plasma in 2025. The 18 sets of power supply systems comprising 400 MVA thyristor AC/DC converters for the superconducting magnets supplied by Korea (KO) are being installed with other systems, such as PF converters (China), DC busbars (Russia), and cooling water systems (India), in two buildings (Europe). The system interfaces have been defined during the design stage, and the systems have been manufactured. However, during the on-site installation work, several installation and integration issues emerged due to the manufacturing tolerance and design mistakes. To continue the installation and testing, the engineers of each system resolved the interface issues, planned the commissioning, and integrated the test plan. This paper describes the on-site installation status and issues and the commissioning plan of KO AC/DC converters.

  • This paper proposes enhanced single-phase pulse width modulation buck, boost, and buck-boost type ac-ac converters. The proposed converters, where input and output voltages share a common ground, require no isolated voltage sensor and have no leakage current problem. The commutation problem is solved with series-connected switching cell structures without using an additional RC snubber. In addition, with the use of the polarity of input voltage, switching patterns are determined so that the inductor currents can flow through switching devices during all operational modes. Two switches are always turned on during a half-period of the input voltage; thus, the switching loss is significantly reduced. Detailed analysis and experimental results are provided to verify the performance of the proposed converter.
