The HVDC transformer which is one of the main equipments for HVDC(High Voltage Direct Current) electric power transmission systems is exposed to not only AC voltage but also the inflowing DC voltage which comes from the DC-AC converter systems. Therefore, the HVDC transformer insulation system is required to withstand the electric field stress under AC, DC and DC polarity reversal conditions. However the electric field distributions under those conditions are different because the AC electric field and DC electric field are governed by permittivity and conductivity, respectively. In this study, the changes of electric potential and electric field of conventional AC transformer insulation system under DC polarity reversal test condition were analyzed by FEM(Finite Element Method). The DC electric field stress was concentrated in the solid insulators while the AC electric field stress was concentrated in the mineral oil. In addition, the electric stress under that condition which is affected by the surface charge accumulation at the interfaces between insulators was evaluated. The stress in some parts could be higher than that of AC and DC condition, during polarity reversal test. The result of this study would be helpful for the HVDC transformer insulation system design.

The effects of electric field frequency on the AC electrical treeing phenomena in an epoxy/layered silicate (1.5 wt%) were investigated in a needle-plate electrode arrangement. A layered silicate was exfoliated in an epoxy-base resin with AC electric field apparatus. To measure the treeing initiation and propagation- and the breakdown rate, a constant alternating current (AC) of 10 kV with three different electric field frequencies (60, 500, and 1,000 Hz) was applied to the specimen in the needle-plate electrode specimen in an insulating oil bath at $130^{\circ}C$. At 60 Hz, the treeing initiation time was 12 min, the propagation rate was $0.24{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min, and the morphology was a dense branch type. As the electric field frequency increased, the treeing initiation time decreased and the propagation rate increased. At 1,000 Hz, the treeing initiation time was 5 min, the propagation rate was $0.30{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min, and the morphology was a dense bush type.

The effects of electric field frequency on the ac electrical treeing phenomena in an epoxy/reactive diluent/layered silicate (1.5 wt%) were carried out, in needle-plate electrode arrangement. A layered silicate was exfoliated in an epoxy base resin, by using our ac electric field apparatus. To measure the treeing propagation rate, constant alternating current (AC) of 10 kV with three different electric field frequencies (60, 500 and 1,000 Hz) was applied to the specimen, in needle-plate electrode arrangement, at $30^{\circ}C$ of insulating oil bath. As the electric field frequency increased, the treeing propagation rate increased. At 500 Hz, the treeing propagation rate of the epoxy/PG/nanosilicate system was $0.41{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min, which was 3.4 times slower than that of the epoxy/PG system. The electrical treeing morphology was dense bush type at 60 Hz; however, as the frequency increased, the bush type was changed to branch type, having few branches, with very slow propagation rate.

High voltage AC electric field has been applied to turbulent propane jets to investigate the effect of electric field on liftoff characteristics. Liftoff velocity and liftoff height have been measured by varying the applied voltage and frequency. Liftoff velocities were delayed and liftoff heights were reduced by applying AC, not by DC. The electric effect became disappeared with further increasing jet velocities, which shows that the effect can be explained by the balance between inertia force and electric force. The flame stabilization effect was intensified as either applied voltage or frequency increased. Plasma streamers were generated between the flame and the jet under high voltage conditions. Liftoff velocity in the absence of plasma can be well correlated by the function of voltage and frequency.
Using high voltage electric fields induced by high voltage AC (10-12 kV/cm, 20 kHz) and pulsed (20-30 kV/cm, 40 Hz) electric field generator as a semipermanent and environment-friendly disinfecting apparatus, the disinfection effect of coliform group in the effluent of sewage plant was investigated. The effects of electric field strength, treatment time, discharge area of a discharge tube, water quality factors (electric conductivity, pH and SS) on its death rate were examined. The death rate of coliform group was increased with increasing electric field strength and treatment time. For AC and pulsed electric field generator, the critical electric field strength was 6 kV/cm and 2 kV/cm, respectively, and the critical treatment time was 5 min and 2 min, respectively, regardless of electric field strength. Comparing the death rate of coliform group by AC and pulsed electric fields used in this study, its death rate was higher for the latter than the former, but did not increase linearly with increasing electric field strength. The results obtained for the effects of discharge area, electric conductivity, pH and SS on the death rate of coliform group using AC electric field (12 kV/cm, 20 kHz) were as follows: its death rate showed the trend to increase linearly with increasing discharge area; for the effect of electric conductivity, its death rate was increased with increasing electric conductivity, regardless of ionic species, increased with increasing cationic valency, but was similar between the same cationic valency; the pH $5{\sim}9$ used in this study did not affect its death rate; its death rate was decreased with increasing SS concentration.

This study investigates the flow characteristics of propane-air premixed flames on AC electric field using the Schlieren method. A voltage was applied to the ring electrode and the burner was grounded to form an electric field, and the applied voltage was fixed at 16 kV (Vpp). Results show that under the application of AC electric fields, flow around the flame oscillated only at frequencies below 50 Hz, and no oscillation was observed above this frequency range. Flame height oscillated with frequency in the range of 25 to 300 Hz, with frequency doubling observed in the range of 25 to 150 Hz. The flammability limit increased with frequency up to 250 Hz, but in the high-frequency range above 250 Hz, the flammability limit did not increased and converged.

A new electric application method was developed to prepare epoxy/organoclay nanocomposite for the electrical insulation in the AC electric fields and it could be also used in the field of various viscous polymer/organoclay systems. The applied AC electric field condition was as follows; (1) inter-electrode distance: 40 mm, (2) application voltage: 3-11 kV, (3) frequency: 60~1,000 Hz, and (4) application time: 0~60 min. To characterize the epoxy/clay nanocomposite, WAXS and TEM analyses were confirmed. In order to explain how the organic modifier affects the exfoliation phenomena, a mechanism of the oscillating collision of the quaternary ammonium head was proposed and the effects of the AC voltage and frequency and the organoclay content were studied.
The reattachment characteristics of propane lifted flames in laminar coflow jets influenced by AC electric fields have been investigated experimentally in low AC frequency range. The reattachment velocity and height have been measured by varying the applied AC voltage and frequency. The results showed that the reattachment of lifted flame occurred at relatively higher jet velocity with AC electric fields, comparing to that without having AC electric fields. The effect of AC electric fields became more effective at higher voltage and lower frequency in the AC frequency range larger than 30 Hz. However, in the low frequency range below 30 Hz, the reattachment velocity decreased with decreasing frequency. Consequently, there existed a transition regime, for the frequency smaller than about 30 Hz. Also, when the AC voltage was applied to the fuel nozzle at very low frequency, the reattachment process exhibited an oscillatory behavior, synchronized with the applied AC frequency.

The relationships between discharge characteristics and sustain electrode shape are studied in AC PDP by calculating the electric field and measuring discharge voltage, luminance and current. The maximum electric field is obtained for the triangle shape electrode. It is 1.8 times larger than uniform electric field type. It has been shown thatthe firing voltage is largely affected by the degree of electric field concentration. But, as the difference of the maximum and minimum value of electric field in a cell increases, the luminance and luminance efficiency decrease. And, the charge variation during discharge is proportional to the area of electrode.
An experimental study on downwardly and upwardly spreading flames over slanted electrical wire, which is insulated by Polyethylene(PE), was conducted with applied AC electric field. The result showed that downwardly and upwardly spreading flames with angle of inclination leaned toward burnt side and unburned side, respectively. With applied AC electric fields, size of downwardly spreading flame decreased slightly and that of upwardly spreading flame increased significantly. Flame spread rate showed various trends in terms of inclination, applied voltage and frequency.
