ABR Congestion Control for Signal Transmissions in ATM Networks (신호 전송을 위한 ATM 망에서의 ABR 체증제어)

  • In this parer, an ABR (Available Bit Rate) congestion control algorithm for voice transmission in ATM networks was proposed. To deal with the network congestion problem, not only the buffer level of a switch but also the variation of the buffer level were considered. Also, to resolve the unfairness among sources where the bit transfer rates vary, a loading factor that is used to adjust the bit rate was introduced. To show the superiority of this paper over others, simulation was done with a network of 7 voice sources and 4 switches, which was represented by Petri net model. ExSpect was used for simulation. The simulation results showed that there was improvement in network utilization and that unfairness among sources were resolved a lot.

  • Asynchronous transfer mode is flexible to support multimedia communication services using asynchronous time-sharing and statistical multimedia techniques to the existing data communication area, ATM ABR service controls network traffic using feedback information on the network congestion situation in order to guarantee the demanded service qualities and the available cell rates, In this paper we apply the control method using queue length prediction to the formation of feedback information for more efficient ABR traffic control. If backward node receive the longer delayed feedback information on the impending congestion, the switch can be already congested from the uncontrolled arriving traffic and the fluctuation of queue length can be inefficiently high in the continuing time intervals, The feedback control method proposed in this paper predicts the queue length in the switch using the slope of queue length prediction function and queue length changes in time-series, The predicted congestion information is backward to the node, NLMS and neural network are used as the predictive control functions, and they are compared from performance on the queue length prediction. Simulation results show the efficiency of the proposed method compared to the feedback control method without the prediction, Therefore, we conclude that the efficient congestion and stability of the queue length controls are possible using the prediction scheme that can resolve the problems caused from the longer delays of the feedback information.

  • This paper suggests a congestion control scheme for CL (ConnectionLess) overlay network using the feedback loops between CL user and CL server, between CL servers, and between end-to-end CL users, and the header translation table of CL server. The CL overlay network for CBDS(Connectionless Broadhand Data Service) defined by ITU-T((International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication) consists of CL servers which route frames and links which connect between CL user and CL server or between CL servers. In the CL overlay network, two kinds of congestion, CL link congestion and CL server congestion, may occur. We considered the schemes to solve the congestion. link-by-link method[18] has used the ABR feedback loops of ATM layer between CL user and CL server or between CL servers, and the congestion table using header translation table of CL server. As in congestion of output virtual channel this method has an effect on all the traffic transmitting through the link, then it has an effect on the traffic that has not caused the congestion. As a result, the link utilization of output virtual channel that does not bring the congestion and outputs the traffic is decreased. To overcome this drawback of link-by-link, we proposed the hybrid method that are using the ABR feedback loops of link-by-link method, the feedback loop between CL users in end-to-end, the congestion table using and the header translation table. This scheme deals with teh congestion immediately by link-by-link loops and the header translation table, and then regulates the sending rate of CL user that causes the congestion by end-to-end loop.

  • In this work, the problem of regulating and tracking available bit rate (ABR) traffic in ATM network. The issue of providing control signals to throttled sources at distant location from bottlenecked node is of particular interest. Network modeling and design of controller is outlined. To obtain optimal control, receding horizon control (RHC) theory is applied. Simulation results are presented in views of regulation and tracking problems with or without constraints.

  • The ATM Forum has been focusing on flow control mechanism for ABR traffic management. The goal of this activity is to efficiently manage the leftover network bandwidth and fairly distribute it among contending ABR VC so that communication links can be optimally utilized. ABR traffic is difficult to predict traffic shape because it has bursts and variable behavior. Also it's sensitive to lose but not to delay. This behavior makes difficult to UPC function in network and cause of congestion in switch, thus performance is degraded. To resolve this problem, various flow control mechanism has been worked in the ATM Forum. Especially, the rate-based flow control mechanism for ABR traffic has been standardized in the ATM Forum, Sept. 1994. Thus, various flow control mechanism has been working which likes EFCI, ER, VS/VD. VS/VD control is superior than existed ER control because it isolate different networks from each other. In this paper, we propose an expanded VS/VD flow control algorithm and compare with existed VS/VD flow control algorithm. Simulation result shows that this algorithm improve a problem in aspect of delay and fairness.

  • In this paper, a new enhanced early fair rate allocation(EFRA+) algorithm is proposed for ATM switches supporting ABR service. The central issue of explicit rate control algorithms for ABR service is the computation of max-min fair rates for every connection. The EFRA+ inherits the main feature of the EFRA, uses the connection control information during the connection setup to prevent potential congestion in switches, and enhances the computation method of the max-min fair rate.

  • The major problem at a branch point for point-to-multipoint available bit rate(ABR) services in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks is how to consolidate backward resource management(BRM) cells from each branch for a multicast connection. In this paper, we propose an efficient feedback consolidation algorithm based on an adaptive dynamic threshold(ADT) to eliminate the consolidation noise and the reduce the consolidation delay. The main idea of the ADT algorithm lies in that each branch point estimates the ABR traffic condition of the network through the virtual queue estimation and the transmission threshold of the queue level in branch points is adaptively controlled according to the estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed ADT algorithm can achieve a faster response in congestion status and a higher link utilization compared with the previous works.

  • The ABR(available bit rate) service has been developed to support data application over ATM(asynchronous Transfer mode) networks, and TCP is the most widely used transport layer protocol in existing data networks. Thus, the performance improvement of TCP over ABR is an issue of cardinal importance. In this paper, we propose algorithm of the adjustment of congestion window size utilizing RM(resource Management) cell information. The motivation is to use more reliable information in ER(explicit rate) field within RM cell to determine TCP window size. Simulations are performance using the suggested algorithm is improved, as compared to TCP-reno.

  • Recently, we are concerned with effective service according as the demand increase for high speed data service. We can use high speed transfer and multiple traffic service on the ATM networks, so we concentrate on preventive-control method rather than reactive-control one. But it is possible to have low QoS and traffic congestion due to unpredictable traffic and burst traffic. Specially, ATM Forum has discussed to standardization of traffic management of ABR(Available Bit Rate) service. Because ABR traffic controls the flow of traffic using the feedback information and the current status information of cell, it allocates bandwidth systematically and dynamically to the user. In this paper, we propose a new Rate-based flow control scheme which adapted double threshold buffer idea. The double threshold buffer controls the traffic control by establishing two threshold in buffer.

  • 현재 ATM 망의 ABR 소스에서 불확실한 시간지연에 대한 이산시 모델에 대해, 많은 연구가 진행되고 있다. 이 모델들은 각각의 소스에서의 대역폭(Bandwidth)을 일정하게 보고 있지만, 현실적으로 소스의 네트워크 상황에 따라 각기 할당되는 대역폭은 큰 차이가 있다. 각기 다른 대역폭을 고려할 때 ABR 스위치 모델은 특이 섭동 구조를 갖는다. 본 연구에서는 대역폭 차에 따른 ABR 스위치에서의 특이 섭동 모델을 제안하고 ABR 스위치에서의 체증을 해결하기 위해 합성제어 기법을 이용한 이산시 최적 제어기를 설계한다.
