The fauna of freshwater fish and water chemistry characteristics were investigated from June, 2014 to October, 2014 at 10 sites in Taebaeksan Provincial Park. A total of 7 species under three families were collected from the survey sites and among them one endangered species - Koreocobitis naktongensis - was identified. The endemic species of Korea were 2 species: Koreocobitis naktongensis, Iksookimia koreensis. Dominant species was Rhynchocypris oxycephalus(89%) and subdominant species was Orthrias nudus(8.9%). Water quality including conductivity, turbidity, pH and total dissolved solids(TDS) varied largely depending on the sampling locations. Values of ambient conductivity and TDS were greater in the upstream than in the downstream, and seasonal variabilities were also higher in the upstream. The pH decreased towards the downstream, and especially showed a sharp decrease in S5. This phenomenon was evident due to a dilution by the influx in the acid mine drainage(AMD) of S4. Physical habit conditions, based on qualitative habitat evaluation index(QHEI) model, indicated a "Sub-optimal" condition(mean: 157.3; range: 78 ~ 194) in the Sodo stream watersheds.

In order to determine whether vegetation would be one of the factors for the selection of otter home range, vegetation structure and other potential factors were studied in Hwacheon, Korea. Thirteen sites, otter's activity found and not found, were investigated in North Han River and connected tributary streams of Hwacheon-gun. Three types of vegetation were classified by cluster analysis, which is short grass, tall grass and shrub type. Vegetation zone of each channel is composed of either one type, or mosaic of tall grass and shrub type. Short grass type is common in Lake Paro and upper North Han-river where water level is highly variable throughout a year. Therefore, annual species such as Persicaria nodosa, Fimbristylis dichotomam and Chenopodium ficifolium are the most dominant. Shrub type is common at the downstream sites of Jichon stream and along mainstream of North Han River down Lake Paro. A shrub species, Salix koreensis, is the most common. Tall grass type is dominant occupying the most vegetation zone of the tributary channels. Phragmites japonica is absolutely dominant. Due to its dense cover, a few plant species are co-existed. Otter activity was found in all three vegetation types and no marked activity was found at some sites of tall grass type. There is no difference in species composition and physiognomy between tall grass sites with and without otter activity, while it shows significant difference in fish availability between two groups. Overall we found that home range of otters in the region is along the mainstream and downstream of tributary streams with high fish availability in all vegetation types and in various human activity levels.
We investigated the ecological characteristics of Phoxinus phoxinus in the spring water in Eocheon stream from January to December 2016. The water temperature was $9.7{\sim}14.3^{\circ}C$ and remained below $15^{\circ}C$ throughout the year. The fishes cohabiting with minnow were Rhynchocypris kumgangensis (70.14%), Cottus koreanus (13.63%), Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (3.16%), Oncorhynchus mykiss (0.97%), Zacco koreanus (0.49%), and Iksookimia koreensis (0.24%). The sex ratio of female to male was 1:0.86. The frequency analysis of total length indicated that the fishes with the total length of 30 - 50 mm were one year old, those of 50 - 65 mm were two years old, those of 65 - 75 mm were three years old, and those of 75 mm or more were four years old. The sexually mature fishes were 50 mm or longer for female and 60 mm or longer for male. The spawning season was from April to July, and the water temperature was $12.3-14.3^{\circ}C$ during the period. The prosperous spawning season was from June to July, and the water temperature was $13.8-4.3^{\circ}C$ during the period. The average number of eggs in the ovaries was 508 per matured female, and the matured eggs were yellowish and spherical with a mean diameter of $1.58{\pm}0.13mm$. The length-weight correlation of P. phoxinus was $BW=0.000007TL^{3.09}$ with the constant a as 0.000007 and the parameter b as 3.09. The condition factor (K) was 0.99 (0.76 - 1.32) in average.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary Weissella koreensis (Wk), a prominent kimchi lactic acid bacteria supplementation on growth performance, nutrients utilization, gut microbiota and meat characteristics in broiler chicken. Both live and killed Wk was compared to know which could be more efficacious as a feed probiotics. Three Wk supplemented groups and no Wk supplemented group were designated according to supplementation levels and cell status. Those were; Control (no Wk), 0.1 % live Wk (LWk 0.1), 0.5% live Wk (LWk 0.5) and 0.5% killed Wk (KWk 0.5). Body weight gain and feed conversion efficiency were improved (P<0.05) by dietary LWk supplementation. KWk did not exert any benefit on growth performance. Crude protein utilizability of KWk supplemented diet was lower (P<0.05) than that of other diets. However, there were no differences among treatments in other nutrients utilization. Serum IgG concentration and relative weight of bursa of Fabricius was highest (P<0.05) in broiler chicken fed KWk 0.5 diet. Cecal anaerobic lactic acid bacteria count of LWk groups were higher (P<0.05) than those of control and KWk 0.5 groups. Dietary Wk supplementation failed to lower the count of cecal and fecal E. coli. There was no effect of dietary Wk on TBARS values and fatty acids profile of broiler leg meat. However, the dietary supplementation of Wk exerted characteristic difference on electronic nose flavor of broiler meat. This study showed that dietary supplementation of LWk was able to improve body weight gain, feed conversion efficiency and cecal lactic acid bacterial count in broiler chicken. Further, the result of this study implemented that a live kimchi lactic acid bacteria, LWk, but not killed Wk, could be used as a probiotic feed supplement for broiler.

We analyzed the effect of changing water level and turbidity on plants that serve to maintain slope stability on levees. In this experiment, soil collected from upstream of Imha Dam was placed in a water tank and planted with river plants of the Salix species: Salix gracilistyla, S. koreensis, and S. glanduosa. Plant regrowth was analyzed stage-by-stage during a recovery period. In addition, we assessed the tolerance of the plants to concentrated torrential rainfall and examined their recovery rates. The results indicate that in the case of these three Salix species, which are the most prevalent river plants in Korea, stem growth is arrested following serious damage and high turbidity. The possibility of regrowth was very low during the 20-day non-submerged recovery period. Although the number of leaves initially decreased during this period, subsequent regrowth was reasonably high: recovery in S. gracilistyla, S. koreensis, and S. glanduosa was up to 59.3%, 251.3%, and 148.4% respectively, compared with the initial condition.
An efficient micropropagation was established by using axillary bud explants from two-year-old tree(Echinosphorea koreensis Nakai), which has been known as a rare and endangered species. Among various basal media tested, DKW medium was shown to be the best for axillary shoot elongation. The addition of both BA and TDZ to the medium induced 6 to 10 shoots per explant during eight weeks of culture, without showing any abnormal morphology at the shoot proliferation stage. However, high concentration of TDZ(>0.05 mg/L) appeared to cause hyperhydration on either leaf or shoot at the later developmental stage. Approximately 20% of shoots produced roots by the addition of 1.0 mg/L NAA but not by IBA($0.2{\sim}1.0$ mg/L). Ex vitro micro-cuttings were better source for root induction; up to 58.6% of the micro-cuttings rooted when 100 mg/L IBA was applied to the soil(vermiculite). More than 90% of plantlets with roots were successfully acclimatized and grew normally in the field. Therefore, we suggest that this endangered tree species can be effectively micropropagated by axillary bud culture system developed in this study.
The ichthyofauna and the structure of fish community were surveyed from April to November 1997 at eighteen stations in the Yonggang river which is a first tributary located at the middle reach of the Nakdong river system. During the surveyed period, 32 species belonging to ten families were collected. Of them cyprinid fish occupied 53.1% (17 species) and cobitid fish 15.6% (5 species). Thirteen species (40.6%) were known as Korean endemic species. Dominant species were Zacco temmincki (32.78%) and Moroco oxycephalus (15.10%). Zacco platypus, Pungtungia herzi. Niwaella multifasciata, and Odontobutis platycephala were common species. Rare species which occupied less than 0.1% of total individuals were Lampetra reissneri, Pseudorasbora parva, Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae, Microphysogobio koreensis, Gobiobitia naktongensis, Cobitis rotundicaudata, Nemacheilus toni, Silurus asotus, Silurus microdorsalis, Siniperca scherzeri, and Oreochromis niloticus. A tendancy were shown in regional distribution that Moroco oxycephalus dominated in upper stream, Zacco temmincki and Moroco oxycephalus in mid - upper stream, Zacco temmincki and Niwaella multifasciata in mid - lower stream, and Zacco platypus and microphysogobioid fishes in lower stream. St. 11 which located in mid- reach of Yongam stream and St. 15 and 18 which located in main stream had the most stable and diverse community structure, but St. 1, 5, and 7 were unstable and the simplest community structure.
This study was carried out to investigate soil properties, ordination, and vegetation of a forest wetland in Jangdo, Sinan-Gun. Peculiar species such as Epilobium pyrricholophum and Lycopus ramosissim us were found in the forest wetland of Jangdo, and Hosta yingeri and Carpinus turczaninovii for coreana that are an endemic species of Korea were also found. The vascular plants of 40 families 62 genera 57 species 9 varieties 1 form, total 67 taxa were accounted for. The communities were classified as Salix koreensis-Isachne globosa community, Isachne globosa community, and Miscathus sinensis var purpurascens community. Soil organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorous concentrations, and cation exchange capacity each ranged from 20.6 to 72.4%, 0.74 to 2.13%, 33.3 to 114.6 ppm, and 25.5 to 94.3 me/100g, respectively. Soil pH ranged from 5.10 to 5.42. Soil texture was clay loam. Results of the correlation between Jangdo forest community and environmental factor are as follows; Soil pH was the most effective factor for plant community distribution. The Salix koreensis-Isachne globosa community was found where it had the highest soil organic matter, nitrogen, and exchangeable Na, Ca, Mg concentration, ana CEC among the three communities. Miscathus sinensis var. purpurascens community was found where it had the lowest soil organic matter, nitrogen, and exchangeable Na, Ca, Mg concentration, and CEC among the three plant communities.
This study was carried out from March to November, 2013 to investigate the fish community structure and distribution characteristics of Phoxinus phoxinus and Rhynchocypris kumgangensis appearing in Gihwacheon Stream, Pyeongchang. A total of 6 families and 19 species of fish emerged during the survey period. The dominant species were R. kumgangensis (Individuals 44.7%, Biomass 30.2%) and P. phoxinus (Individuals 27.7%, Biomass 15.9%). Endemic species were 10 species including Pseudopungtungia tenuicorpus, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, Hemibarbus mylodon, Gobiobotia brevibarba, Microphysogobio longidorsalis, R. kumgangensis, Zacco koreanus, Korecobitis rotundicaudata, Iksookimis koreensis and Coreoperca herzi. Endogenous species were P. tenuicorpus, G. brevibarba and P. phoxinus. Hemibarbus mylodon was a natural monument. Oncherhynchus mykiss was exotic species and translocated species was Oncorhynchus masou masou. The dominant species, R. kumgangensis, appeared at all survey sites. Except for St.6, the b value was more than 3.0 and the slope of K value showed positive correlation. P. phoxinus appeared in St. 3~St. 6 and St. 3 and St. 4 only showed stable populations.
