  • In this study, we examined the ectomycorrhiza (ECM) formed by a species of the genus Tuber, T. koreanum, with two indigenous Korean oak species, Quercus acutissima and Q. dentata. T. koreanum showed a high colonization rate for both oak species, with a higher mean colonization rate observed for Q. acutissima. The mycorrhizal characteristics of T. koreanum were described, revealing distinct morphological and anatomical differences between the ECM formed with the two host plants. This study is significant because it is the first to elucidate ECM formations of T. koreanum in indigenous oak trees. However, further studies are required to differentiate the ECM associations formed by T. koreanum from those of other Tuber species.

  • This study was conducted to develop a new functional material by optimizing the conditions for high concentrations of chlorogenic acid and eleutheroside E in Acanthopanax koreanum stem. The total phenolic compound content was the highest in the 20 hours sonication Acanthopanax koreanum stem extract (UAK-20). In addition, eleutheroside E, a typical functional ingredient of Cortex Acanthopanacis, in the 20 hours treated Acanthopanax koreanum stem extract showed the highest content at 1.646%. However, another functional ingredient, chlorogenic acid, showed the highest content of 2.625% in 1 hour treated Acanthopanax koreanum stem extract. Therefore, it is considered that the optimal conditions for high concentrations of total phenolic compound and eleutheroside E are 20 hours sonication Acanthopanax koreanum stem extract.

  • Acanthopanax koreanum Nakai (Araliaceae) is a indigenous medicinal plant growing throughout Jeju-Do in Korea. The plant extract is used in rheumatism, tonic, paralysis and sedative agent. From the roots of A. koreanum, lignan compounds, a diterpenoid, and a polyacetylene compound were isolated and their structures were elucidated by using IR, PMR, CMR and MS spectral data.

  • This study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant activities and protective effects on PC12 cells of the extract of Epimedium koreanum and its main constituents icariin and icariside I. After screening the seven identified flavonoid glycosides from E. koreanum through DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate) assay, E. koreanum, Icariin and Icariside I exhibited significant effect on radical scavenging activity. E. koreanum, icariin and icariside I were examined using DPPH, ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) and FRAP (ferric reducing ability power) assay. In all antioxidant assays, E. koreanum, icariin and icariside I showed high radical scavenging activities in a dose-dependent manner. Protective effects against $H_2O_2-induced$ PC12 cells were assessed with MTT assay. The results indicated that cell viability and protection on PC12 cells of icariside I and icariin increased dose dependently. These study results suggest that E. koreanum, icariin and icariside showed high antioxidant capacities and cell protective effects. Icariside I, one of the metabolites of icariin, may be a new and effective flavonoid compound as a functional component.

  • Acanthopanax species are well known medicinal plants in Korea for their adaptogenic efficacy. Regarding to the botanical classification of Acanthopanax koreanum, an indigenous species in Jeju island of Korea, it has been classified as different species of Acanthopanax genus. However, the morphological characteristics of A. koreanum are very similar with other Acanthopanax species, especially with A. gracilistylus. In order to provide further classification information among these botanically related species, microscopic and morphological studies on these Acanthopanax species were performed. In this result, it has been found that A. koreanum is similar to A. gracilistylus in terms of anatomical observation and was distinguished from A. sieboldianus by their morphological and anatomical differences.

  • Members of the genus Tuber are ectomycorrhizal fungi; this genus includes more than 180 species worldwide. In the present study, the optimal pH, temperature, and medium suitable for the mycelial growth of the Korean truffle, Tuber koreanum, were determined. Mycelium of T. koreanum, isolated from fruiting bodies collected in Korea, was used to investigate the effects of these environmental factors. The results showed that malt extract agar and potato dextrose agar were the most suitable for the mycelial growth of T. koreanum when cultured at a pH of 6.0 at 25 ℃ for 30 days.

  • The present study was performed to quantitatively analyze eleutherosides (B and E) and ${\beta}$-glucan in different plant parts of three cultivars (Chungnam, Gangwon, and Jeju) of Acanthopanax senticosus and Acanthopanax koreanum using HPLC and a commercial enzyme kit. Our results showed high linearity in the calibration curves as the coefficients of correlation ($R^2$) were 0.998 (eleutheroside B) and 0.999 (eleutheroside E), respectively. Eleutheroside B and E were found in stem extracts of A. koreanum cultivated in Jeju (1,122 ${\mu}g/g$, eleutheroside B) and A. senticosus cultivated in Chungnam (2,536 ${\mu}g/g$, eleutheroside E), respectively. However, eleutheroside B was not detected in any part of A. senticosus cultivated in Chungnam. For ${\beta}$-glucan contents, stems of A. senticosus and A. koreanum showed higher than other parts. Furthermore, the ${\beta}$-glucan content in stems of A. koreanum cultivated in Gangwon was significantly higher than in those of other cultivars. These results show that the contents of eleutheroside B, E, and ${\beta}$-glucan were higher in stem extracts of A. senticosus and A. koreanum than other parts. Moreover, our results suggest that the contents of eleutheroside B, E, and ${\beta}$-glucan in A. senticosus and A. koreanum are influenced by cultivation area and the selected part.

  • This study was carried out to obtain the basic informations for phenolic compounds by various sections of Acanthopanacis Caulis. The phenolic compounds of Korean Acanthopanacis bark and lignum (Acanthopanax divaricatus var. albeofructus, Acanthopanax koreanum) were measured by the HPLC analysis. The content of total phenolic components of Acanthopanax koreanum bark (1.532%) was about 9.9 times higher than that of Acanthopanax koreanum lignum (0.155%). And also, The content of total phenolic components of Acanthopanax divaricatus var. albeofructus bark (0.420%) was about 2.8 times higher than that of Acanthopanax divaricatus var. albeofructus lignum (0.149%). Eleutheroside E, a functional ingredient of Acanthopanacis Caulis, showed 3.6 times higher contents of Acanthopanax koreanum bark (0.144%) than Acanthopanax koreanum lignum (0.040%). In the case of Acanthopanax divaricatus var. albeofructus bark (0.129%), the content of the eleutheroside E was 1.7 times higher than that of the Acanthopanax divaricatus var. albeofructus lignum (0.074%).
