  • The purpose of this study was to establish objectives for ninth grade studies of heredity and evolution in middle school in an attempt to foster students' consciousness of bioethics, and it's additionally intended to develop and apply lesson plans handling different points at issue and to determine the effects of the lesson plans on the bioethics of middle school students. The subjects in this study were 152 ninth graders in a middle school, whose science scores were similar. An experimental group and a control group were made up of 76 students respectively, and a pretest was conducted with test paper developed by this researcher to assess their awareness of bioethics. The experimental group took lessons by using the teaching plans prepared in this study, and the control group received typical education according to the curriculum. And then a posttest was implemented with test paper developed in this study to compare the two groups. In addition their science grades were compared as well. The findings of the study were as follows: First, seven learning objectives were selected from three units related to bioethics in the third-year 8th category of heredity and evolution of middle school. Second, in order to attain the selected learning objectives, four session lesson plans were prepared. Third, the experimental group that studied using by the lesson plans made better progress in bioethics awareness and the gap between the two was statistically significant(t=6.61, p<.001). The former were ahead of the latter in consciousness about species equity(t=7.71, p<.001), the dignity of life (t=3.78, p<.001), human rights(t=2.99, p<.01) and equity among generations(t=2.66, p<.01), but not in awareness of the diversity of species. • Though the investigation of the suggested references proverbs related weather were collected and considered the probability of the usage on science instruction. The results are as follows. 130 proverbs related to weather were collected through the investigation of the suggested references. Most of weather proverbs are based on the states of sky, clouds, wind, precipitation, actions of animal, states of plants and the condition of people in daily life. they were classified according to weather types, natural phenomena and seasons. According to the results of analysing the students' recognition and interests on weather proverbs, most of students heard weather proverbs in their elementary school years firstly through their parents, books, and teachers. However they have only heard a few. Also many students also tend to think weather proverbs have a scientific base because weather proverbs have been told by many people through the ancient time and correspond to their personal experiences. Students responded that weather proverbs are useful for science learning on weather and can teach heritage and wisdom. After reading the suggested weather proverbs, their interests on weather proverbs were increased more than before reading. This is one of reasons why weather proverbs can be introduced to science classes. Weather proverbs were considered related to science curriculum. The third grade has a Unit "Fine days and Cloudy days", the fifth grade, "Unit of Weather Change", the Sixth grade, "Unit of Weather Forecast" , the Ninth grade, "Unit of Water cycle and Weather Change" and the tenth grade has "Unit of Earth". So the author consider that weather proverb materials can be used so effectively to bring about interest and motive in science learning.

  • This study was attempted to find out the actual conditions about drug education among the elementary school teachers. Subjects consisted of nurse-teachers 175, class-room teachers 240 and athletics teachers 53 at the elementary schools in Pusan city. The data collecting period was December 23th through December 28th, 2002 and the collected data were analyzed by SPSSWIN 10.0 program using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and $x^2$-test. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The importance of the drug education in special curriculum has been agreed with 96.0% of nurse-teachers, 90.4% of classroom teachers and 92.4% of athletics teachers. 2. For the drug education, nurse-teachers used to get information through the professional knowledge books(61.1%), and internet (33.1%), on the other hand class-room teachers(80.0%) and athletics teachers (48.9%) used to get information from various media. 3. Until now, the drug education has been performed by 80.6% of nurse-teachers, 34.2% of class-room teachers and 41.5% of athletics teachers. After drug education, the results of self-evaluation showed that 73.8% of nurse-teachers and 51.9% of athletics teachers were satisfied with it, but 69.5% of class-room teachers were not. In terms of the education methodology, most nurse-teachers(85.8%) usually used both verbal lecture and multi-media materials for teaching, but class-room teachers(97.8%) and athletics teachers(81.8%) just gave the verbal lecture. 4. About practical difficulties of drug education, the biggest problem was the absence of no systematic curriculum for nurse-teachers(22.9%), the insufficient expert knowledge for class-room teachers (26.3%) and a lack of education materials for athletics teachers(37.7%). The subjects were responded that the well-qualified personnel in charge of drug education in elementary school were nurse-teachers (52.0%) or nurse-teachers and class-room teachers.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a nutrition education curriculum with teacher's guide which includes discretionary activities for obese children. A survey was carried out to investigate the recognition of body image and food behaviors according to the obesity index (mild, moderate, severe) in school children (4~6th grade, 158 boys and 60 girls) who were selected based on a physical examination in May, 2006 in the Gyeongnam province. Next, a nutrition education curriculum with teacher's guide was developed on the basis of the findings from the survey and from preceding researches. The results are summarized as follow. The results of this study showed the existence of some nutritional problems such as overeating, prejudice, skipping meals, snacking patterns, etc, which indicate the need for nutritional management for obese children. Most overweight children (80.3%) showed the most interest in the nutrition education program, particularly with regards to dieting for weight control (64.7%). The developed nutrition education curriculum consisted of 8 main subjects and 13 subtitles. The curriculum was prepared for 13 lessons and included songs and singing, making-up lyrics, games about nutrition, discussions of the experience of eating (satiety, thirst, hunger), debates on dietary habits, writing and others to promote the interest for learning. We aimed to develop this program in an attempt to improve the dietary habits of obese school children. This is very important because once a dietary habit is formed in adults, it is difficult to change and the best adjustable stage is during childhood. Therefore, early nutrition education during elementary school can change and build-up the awareness of health in young elementary school children.

  • Recently, dissection puzzles such as pentominoes have been used in mathematics education. But they are not actively applicable as a tool of problem solving or introducing mathematical concepts since researches about the historical background and developments of mathematical applications of such puzzles have not been effectively accomplished. In this article, in order to use pentominoes in mathematical teaming effectively, we first investigate geometric problems related to dissection puzzles and the historic background of development of pentominoes. And then we collect and classify data related to pentomino activities which can be applicable to mathematics classes based on the 7th elementary school national curriculum. Finally, we suggest several basic materials and directions to develop more systematic learning materials about pentominoes.

  • In the 7th-curriculum, only basic arithmetics of complex numbers have been taught. They are taught formally like literal manipulations. This paper analyzes mathematically essential relations between algebra of complex numbers and plane geometry. Historical analysis is also performed to find effective methods of teaching complex numbers in school mathematics. As a result, we can integrates this analysis with school mathematics by help of Viete's operations on right triangles. We conclude that teaching geometric interpretation of complex numbers is possible in school mathematics.

  • The 7th national curriculum shifts the fundamental spirit from teachercentered to learner-centered instruction. According to the shift, performance assessment has been emphasized in schools rather than using a variety of standardized tests. However, some researchers and educational policy-makers recently asserted that we need to return to the kind of standardized tests used in the past, giving up performance assessment, for it can actually not be implemented in classroom. This paper is written to refute their assertion. Performance assessment prove one's real worth when it is implemented in learner-centered instruction. Therefore, some assessment methods are discussed which can be used during learner-centered instruction.
