  • Fifty-day-old plug seedlings of yacon (Polymnia sonchiflolia Poeppig & Endlicher) were transplanted on Mar. 23, Apr,8, Apr,23, May 8, May 23, and June 7,2002 at Jeju to evaluate the effect of transplanting date on the growth and yield of yacon in Jeju island. Delaying the transplanting until May 23 greatly decreased plant height stem height, main stem diameter and number of nodes per plant. The number of marketable tuberous roots was about 6.0 per plant with the early transplanting from March 23 to April 231 but decreased to 1.9 per plant with the latest transplanting time, June 7. The yield of marketable tuberous roots of early transplanted (March 23 to April 23) yacon was about 27 MT/ha, and was 32.4 MT/ha at April 23 transplanting, but was remarkably reduced at the three later transplantings, May 8, May 23, and June 7. Dry matter and soluble solid contents of marketable tuberous roots were 14% and 15%, respectively, regardless of transplanting date. The weight of a marketable tuberous root ranged from 153 to 183.9 g at the first three transplantings, but gyeatly reduced with delaying transplanting until May 7. The optimum transplanting date for yacon in Jeju island seems to be from mid-April to late April considering tuberous root yields, the risk of late-spring frost, and cost of seedling raising.

  • The experiment was carried out to examine the effects of planting date on the growth and marketable yield of bitter gourd grown in rain-shield plastic houses. Bitter gourd cv 'Dragon' seedlings were separately transplanted during the months of June, July and August, 2015. The training method of all plants was made with four lateral vines and pinching the main vine. Lateral length of plants exhibited no significant difference between each planting date. However, bitter gourd planted in June had significantly higher main stem diameter than those treatments planted on August. The application of planting date was found effective in increasing marketable yield and number of fruits. June, as a planting date, had the highest marketable yield (6,439kg/10a), whereas bitter gourd planted in August had the lowest yield (870kg/10a) which were also consistent in terms of the number of fruits. Fruit length and diameter had no significant differences as affected by treatments. Therefore, planting date of bitter gourd in June was effective in increasing yield of fruit in rain-shield plastic house conditions.

  • In order to find out the optimum transplanting date of mat rush, this study was investigated ecological characters, yield components and yield of three varieties (Okayama#2, Sajanami and Sedo #4) at 5 transplanting dates(October 25, November 5, November 15, November 25 and March 5). As transplanting date was delayed, the flowering date and maturing date was delayed also and stem length was longest in October 25 transplanting but it grew short in the late transplanting. Number of stems per plant was increased most in October 25 transplanting, that is, increased to 143 in okayama#2, 138 in Sedo#4 and 135 in Sajanami, and it was decreased in the late transplanting. Fresh stem yield and dry stem yield were heaviest in October 25 transplanting, and it was light in the late transplanting. Judging from the results reported above, in optimum transplanting date of mat rush seemed to be before the October 25.

  • The experiment was carried out to examine the effect of planting date on the growth and marketable yield on rain shielding vinyl house in Busan area. Okra cultivars were 'Jukokra', 'Greensod', 'Marumichang', 'Betafive' and 'Akamarumichang'. Planting date were June and July. Plant height, stem length and leaf width were significantly different between various cultivars. Plant height and stem length were best at 'Akamarumichang' among all cultivars tested and the 'Betafive' cultivars showed the lowest plant growth of June treatment. There was no significant difference in planting of July treatment. Marketable yield of okra fruit was affected by planting date. In case of June planting date, 'Betafive' cultivars produced the highest marketable yield (4,286 kg/10a) in green fruit. Marketable yield of green okra fruit was increased at 'Betafive' and 'Greensod' cultivars, whereas 'Marumichang' cultivars was lowerd. Therefore, the optimum planting date was considered June planting in rain shielding culture of okra in Busan area.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of planting times on the growth and yield of artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) in non-heated greenhouse in Jeju Island ($33^{\circ}28.110N,\;126^{\circ}31.076E$), Korea. Five transplanting dates (from Feb. 25 to Apr. 30) of the first half of the year and six transplanting dates (from July 30 to Dec. 15) of the second half of the year were compared. In the spring cycle, most of the flower buds emerged from May to June, and the emergence was slightly earlier in 'Imperial Star' than in 'Green Globe'. The earliest harvest on June 16 was 'Imperial Star' which was planted on Feb. 25. The highest yield of 856 kg/10a was observed in 'Imperial Star' which was planted on Feb. 25. Transplanting of the first half of the year, it was impossible to harvest in the same year when the planting was done after April 15 since the flower buds were not emerged. The flower buds emerged from late Feb. to middle April of the following year in the all planting times of the second half of the year. It was possible to harvest the first time in early April. The highest yield was 2,127 kg/10a in 'Green Globe' which was planted on July 30, and the yields decreased as the planting times were delayed. In the comparisons of planting times of artichoke, it would be recommendable to plant artichoke on Feb. 25 for the same year harvest and in July 30~Oct. 15 for the following year harvest in Jeju Island non-heated greenhouse cultivation.

  • This experiment was conducted to study the effect of different defoliation methods on the same leaf characters and grain yields of perilla. Transplanting dates were from June 20, July 20, to August 20, 1989, and defoliated 30, 40, 50, 60 days after transplanting, respectively. The results obtained are summerized as follows: In the case that the fully developed leaves were defoliated, the number of total leaves were increased by more defoliations and by the later defoliation, Leaf length, width and area, fresh leaf weight, defoliated leaves per plant and grain yeidls were significantly influenced by the defoliation methods, Grain yields of the defoliation plots were lower than that of non-defoliation plot, As the above results, considering the grain yield, defoliation may be available in the case of one or two times of defoliation at the early growing stage. The profits from any type of defoliation were higher than that for grain yield only.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the flower yield and quality of Lilium Oriental Hybrids as affected by planting date. In cut flower production experiments, effect of planting date and bulb source was studied in rain shelter houses with 30% shading. Four planting dates compared were May 15, June 5, June 25, and July 15. Bulbs used for cut flower production were either imported or produced domestically. The greatest cut flower yield and quality were obtained from bulbs planted either on May 15 or June 25. Bulbs planted on July 15 produced cut flowers of very poor quality and yield, due to high temperatures during the planting time. Therefore, for planting in July, means other than 30% shading have to be adapted to lower temperature during early growth stage. Although plants from imported bulbs had better growth and cut flower yield as compared to domestic bulbs, there was no significant difference.

  • Shoot parts of a monocarpic and short day plant Orostachys japonicus have been used as a herbal medicine. The study was carried out to examine the effect of transplanting time (May 30, June 30, July 30) of its seedlings on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Two hours night-break treatment at midnight was done since Aug. 25 when samples were taken afterward every 4 weeks. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. Plant height and inflorescence length became longer with delayed transplanting time. Number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were more and thicker when transplanted on June 30 than two other treatments. Leaves and bracts, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights showed nearly the same result to the number of leaves although floret dry weight were increased as transplanting time was delayed. Although florets were most formed when transplanted on June 30, they were not flowered because of the night-break treatment, meaning that the transplanting time had little effect on its growth and anthesis of the florets.
