This paper focuses on the DSP implementation of an HMM-based speech recognizer that can handle several hundred words of vocabulary size as well as speaker independency. First, we develop an HMM-based speech recognition system on the PC that operates on the frame basis with parallel processing of feature extraction and Viterbi decoding to make the processing delay as small as possible. Many techniques such as linear discriminant analysis, state-based Gaussian selection, and phonetic tied mixture model are employed for reduction of computational burden and memory size. The system is then properly optimized and compiled on the TMS320C6711 DSP for real-time operation. The implemented system uses 486kbytes of memory for data and acoustic models, and 24.5kbytes for program code. Maximum required time of 29.2ms for processing a frame of 32ms of speech validates real-time operation of the implemented system.

Recently, Power Conditioning System (PCS) tends to become more compact, and tends to require higher efficiency, and higher power density with better performance. To meet these requirements, a novel topology consisted of LLC resonant inverter with two resonant tanks for low power losses and Low Frequency (LF) cyclo-converter for sine wave filtering is proposed. The operating schemes are analyzed and described. A 400W proto product is built, tested and verified the performances by connecting the 110Vac 60Hz utility line.

One of the advantages of computer graphics is that it enables to view an object on different viewpoints and different angles. Therefore, a computer graphics system should be able to rotate an arbitrary object by an arbitrary angle about an arbitrary axis. This is usually done by rotating vertices that represent an object and connecting them. Hence an image may have many vertices, it is important to be able to rotate each of them quickly. Therefore, this paper is interested in a rotation matrix computation method that consists of the smallest number of computational steps. This pater proposes an algorithm that computes rotation matrix to rotate a 3 dimensional image about an arbitrary axis quickly.
In this paper, a new method for controlling the pointing device on digital display using EOG(electrooculogram) which is generated from eye movement, was suggested. The manufactured system is consisting of pre-amplifier, A/D converter, serial transmission device and PC program. The EOG is amplified by pre-amplifier. And the amplified EOG is digitized and transmitted to personal computer via rs-232c by PIC16C74A. Finally, the software for controlling the pointer on digital display is developed on computer. As the result, the error between the real subject's viewing point and the point indicated by the developed pointing device on digital display was investigated into the average value, 0.72 degree for horizontal axis, 0.96 degree for vertical axis. The pointing device developed in this study is controlled by subject's eye movement, that is, the user's intention. Furthermore, the algorithm of this study is applicable for many field such as a new method remote control, a new wheelchair control and so forth.

This paper introduces a interword modeling and a Viterbi search method for continuous speech recognition. We also describe a development of a real-time voice dialing system which can recognize around one hundred words and continuous digits in speaker independent mode. For continuous digit recognition, between-word units have been proposed to provide a more precise representation of word junctures. The best path in HMM is found by the Viterbi search algorithm, from which digit sequences are recognized. The simulation results show that a interword modeling using the context-dependent between-word units provide better recognition rates than a pause modeling using the context-independent pause unit. The voice dialing system is implemented on a DSP board with a telephone interface plugged in an IBM PC AT/486.
Background : The dominant innervation of airway smooth muscle is parasympathetic fibers which are carried in the vagus nerve. Activation of these cholinergic nerves releases acetylcholine which binds to $M_3$ muscarinic receptors on the smooth muscle causing bronchocontraction. Acetylcholine also feeds back onto neuronal $M_2$ muscarinic receptors located on the postganglionic cholinergic nerves. Stimulation of these receptors further inhibits acetylcholine release, so these $M_2$, muscarinic receptors act as autoreceptors. Loss of function of these $M_2$ receptors, as it occurs in animal models of hyperresponsiveness, leads to an increase in vagally mediated hyperresponsiveness. However, there are limited data pertaining to whether there are dysfunctions of these receptors in patients with asthma. The aim of this study is to determine whether there are dysfunction of $M_2$ muscarinic receptors in asthmatic patients and difference of function of these receptors according to severity of asthma. Method : We studied twenty-seven patients with asthma who were registered at Pulmonology Division of Korea University Hospital. They all met asthma criteria of ATS. Of these patients, eleven patients were categorized as having mild asthma, eight patients moderate asthma and eight patients severe asthma according to severity by NAEPP Expert Panel Report 2(1997). All subjects were free of recent upper respiratory tract infection within 2 weeks and showed positive methacholine challenge test ($PC_{20}$<16mg/ml). Methacholine provocation tests were performed twice on separate days allowing for an interval of one week. In the second test, pretreatment with the $M_2$ muscarinic receptor agonist pilocarpine($180{\mu}g$) through inhalation was performed be fore the routine procedures. Results : Eleven subjects with mild asthma and eight subjects with moderate asthma showed significant increase of $PC_{20}$ from 5.30$\pm$5.23mg/ml(mean$\pm$SD) to 20.82$\pm$22.56mg/ml(p=0.004) and from 2.79$\pm$1.51mg/ml to 4.67$\pm$3.53mg/ml(p=0.012) after pilocarpine inhalation, respectively. However, in the eight subjects with severe asthma significant increase of $PC_{20}$ from l.76$\pm$1.50mg/ml to 3.18$\pm$4.03mg/ml(p=0.161) after pilocarpine inhalation was not found. Conclusion : In subjects with mild and moderate asthma, function of $M_2$ muscarinic receptors was normal, but there was a dysfunction of these receptors in subjects with severe asthma. ηlese results suggest that function of $M_2$ muscarinic receptors is different according to severity of asthma.
The purpose of this study was to develop a Quality of Life(QOL) scale for breast cancer patients in Korea and to test the validity and reliability of the instrument. To achieve the purpose of the study, a questionnaire was developed to interview 10 breast cancer patients and distributed to 155 patients with breast cancer in Korea. For data analysis, SPSS WIN 8.0/PC were used. Item analysis and factor analysis were carried out to test validity of the QOL scale. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ and Guttman split half coefficient were used to test reliability of the scale. The results were as follows; As a result of the item analysis, 27 items were selected from the total of 34 items. 6 factors were selected by factor analysis. Six factors were labeled as 'response to cancer diagnosis and treatment', 'family well-being', 'physical concerns', 'psychological well-being', 'spiritual well-being', and 'economic concerns'. Six factors were explained by 72.236% out of the total variance. The first factor explained 20.738% and the second factor explained 16.593%, which were major factors for Korean breast cancer patients. Chronbach's ${\alpha}$ coefficient of the tool was .9120, and Guttman split-half coefficient was .8148. The scale was identified to be a tool with a high degree of reliability and validity. Therefore, this scale can be effectively utilized for assessment of Quality of Life of patients with breast cancer in Korea.

Using beam data and accurate 3D dose model, a study of the spatial dose distribution for various arcs was carried out. The dose dirstibution generated by the accurate dose model could be represented by a simple approximate analytic form which is convenient and very efficient for calculating dose distribution iteratively in the optimization procedure. We developed an empirical cylindrical dose model to compute dose for one full rotational arc or partial rotational arc. After a tedious search for fits to a collection of 200 points of accurate dose data, we found simple formular with 7 parameters search. As a consequence, the programs required approximately less than 1 second to compute dose for one single arc on a 20 by 20 matrix (400 points) using fast approximate dose model. In conclusion the fast approximate dose model give dose distributions similar to the accurate dose model, which makes this fast dose model an attractive alternative to the accurate 3D dose model.
The purpose of this study was to explain the relationship of professional self-concept, self-efficacy and job satisfaction among nephrology nurses. The subject consisted of 84 nephrology nurses who work at 17 hospitals in Kwangju, Chonnam, Chonbuk and Cheju-do. The instrument of this study was a structured questionnaire on professional self-concept, self-efficacy and job satisfaction. The data were collected from August 16 to September 10, 1999 and analyzed by Cronbach alpha, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test and Pearson's correlation coefficient by using the SPSS/PC+ program. The results of the research were as follows : 1. The average item scores were 2.73 for professional self-concept and 7.16 for selfefficacy. The average item score of job satisfaction was 3.05. Professional status (3.56) among the component factors of the job satisfaction had the highest value followed by the interaction(3.46), task requirements(3.28), autonomy(2.98), organizational requirement(2.70), and pay(2.22) was the lowest. 2. The relationship between general characteristics and professional self-concept shows a significant difference with regard to position and the nurses' intention to stay. The relationship between general characteristics and self-efficacy shows a significant difference with regard to position and shift. 3. A significant positive correlation between professional self-concept and self-efficacy (r=0.462, p<0.01) was found. A significant positive correlation between professional self-concept and job satisfaction(r=0.486, p<0.01) was found. In conclusion, professional self-concept and job satisfaction of nephrology nurses are significantly related. A professional self-concept is an important factor for job satisfaction of nephrology nurses. Therefore, this study suggested that we should develop programs and policies to increase the professional self-concept of nephrology nurses for their job satisfaction.
