Steroid injections in pain management: influence on coronavirus disease 2019 vaccines

  • The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has been rampant since the end of 2019, has evidently affected pain management in clinical practice. Fortunately, a COVID-19 vaccination program is currently in progress worldwide. There is an ongoing discussion that pain management using steroid injections can decrease COVID-19 vaccine efficacy, although currently there is no direct evidence to support this statement. As such, the feeling of pain in patients is doubled in addition to the co-existing ill-effects of social isolation associated with the pandemic. Thus, in the COVID-19 era, it has become necessary that physicians be able to provide high quality pain management without negatively impacting COVID-19 vaccine efficacy. Steroids can alter the entire process involved in the generation of adaptive immunity after vaccination. The period of hypophysis-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression is known to be 1 to 4 weeks after steroid injection, and although the exact timing for peak efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines is slightly different for each vaccine, the average is approximately 2 weeks. It is suggested to avoid steroid injections for a total of 4 weeks (1 week before and after the two vaccine doses) for the double-shot vaccines, and for 2 weeks in total (1 week before and after vaccination) for a single-shot vaccine. This review focuses on the basic concepts of the various COVID-19 vaccines, the effect of steroid injections on vaccine efficacy, and suggestions regarding an appropriate interval between the administration of steroid injections and the COVID-19 vaccine.

Inhibitory Constituents against Cyclooxygenases from Aralia cordata Thunb

  • Seven diterpenes, four polyacetylenes, a lipid glycerol, and two sterols were isolated from the methylene chloride fraction of the root of Aralia cordata. Their chemical structures were determined as (-)-pimara-8(14), 15-dien-19-oic acid (2), pimaric acid (3), (-)-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid (4), 17-hydroxy-ent-kaur-15-en-19-oic acid (9), $7{\alpha}$-hydroxy-(-)-pimara-8(14), 15-dien-19-oic acid (10), $16\alpha$, 17 -dihydroxy-(-)-kauran-19-oic acid (11), 16-hydroxy-17-isovaleroyloxy-ent-kauran-19­oic acid (12), falcarindiol (5), dehydrofalcarindiol (6), dehydrofalcarindiol-8-acetate (7), falcarin­diol-8-acetate (8), alpha-mono palmitin (13), stigmasterol (1), and daucosterol (14) by the spectral evidences. These compounds were tested with COX-1 and COX-2 inhibition assays. This study found that compounds 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 inhibited COX-1 dependent conversion of the exogenous arachidonic acid to $PGE_2$ in a dose-dependent manner with $IC_{50}$ values of $134.2{\mu}M$, $121.6{\mu}M$, $170{\mu}M$, $50.4{\mu}M$, $11.7{\mu}M$, $99.6{\mu}M$, and $69.6{\mu}M$, respectively. But, most of these compounds weakly inhibited COX-2 dependent $PGE_2$ generation. Among them, only compound 4 showed relatively significant inhibitory activity $(IC_{50}\;:\;127.6{\mu}M)$.

찰옥수수 포장에서 1세대 조명나방(Ostrinia furnacalis) 방제를 위한 살충제 처리 시기 (Application Timings of Insecticides to Control the First Generation of the Asian Corn Borer, Ostrinia furnacalis in Waxy Maize Fields)

  • 찰옥수수 재배기간 중에 조명나방의 발육태별 밀도 변화와 옥수수의 피해 양상, 유기합성살충제 처리 효과 조사를 통해 1세대 조명나방 유충에 대한 적절한 방제시기를 결정하였다. 수원 지방에서 2016년 4월 20일에 일미찰 옥수수를 파종하고 7월 26일(옥수수 호숙기)에 수확하였다. 성페로몬트랩 조사에서 1화기(월동세대) 성충은 5월 29일 최대발생 피크를, 5월 31일에 50% 누적 발생을 보였다. 1세대 조명나방 유충의 대부분은 찰옥수수 생식생장기 초기인 7월 초까지 발육하였다. 1세대 조명나방 유충은 먼저 말린 잎 안에서 가해하고 이후 수술과 줄기로 이동하여 가해하고, 마지막으로 줄기와 이삭으로 이동하여 가해하였다. 시기별로 살충제를 처리한 후 피해 억제 효과를 검정한 결과, 찰옥수수 9~11엽기(late whorl stage)(6월 10~17일)가 에토펜프록스 유제의 유효한 처리시기였고, 6~7엽기(mid-whorl stage)(6월 3일)가 카보퓨란 입제의 유효한 처리시기였다. 이 시기들은 두 살충제에 대해 성충 최대포획일 12~19일 후와 5일 후였고, 50% 누적발생일 기준으로는 2일씩 앞당겨졌다.

  • 최근 COVID-19로 인한 언택트 시대로의 전환이 가속화되고 사람들이 실내에 머무는 시간이 증가함에 따라 개방된 인터넷을 통해서 영화, 방송 프로그램 등 미디어콘텐츠를 제공하는 OTT(Over-The-Top) 서비스 시장이 크게 확대되었으며 이는 디지털 환경과 기기에 익숙한 MZ세대에게 큰 주목을 받고 있다. 본 연구에서는 OTT 서비스의 특성이 국내 MZ세대 이용자의 몰입 및 만족도와 브랜드 충성도에 미치는 영향에 대해 대표적인 OTT 서비스 브랜드 중 하나인 넷플릭스 국내 이용자를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 본 연구를 수행하기 위해 총 216명의 넷플릭스 OTT 서비스를 이용해본 경험이 있는 사람들의 설문 조사 자료를 분석에 활용하여 수립한 가설을 실증적으로 검증하였다. 분석결과, OTT 서비스의 특성 중 콘텐츠 다양성, 편의성, 신뢰성은 몰입에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 몰입은 만족도에 정(+)의 영향을 미치고, 만족도는 브랜드 충성도에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 OTT 서비스의 특성 중 추천 서비스는 몰입에 정(+)의 영향을 미치지 않았으며 몰입은 브랜드 충성도에 직접적으로 정(+)의 영향을 미치지 못하고 만족도를 통해서 브랜드 충성도에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것을 확인하였다. 본 연구를 통해서 OTT 서비스 관련 산업의 시장 활성화 및 점점 증가하고 있는 OTT 서비스 브랜드들의 MZ세대 소비자들을 위한 마케팅 전략 수립에 기여할 수 있을 것을 기대하며 포스트 코로나 시대에 대비한 실무적인 시사점을 제공하고자 한다.

회전체의 비틀림 고유진동 해석 (Analysis of Torsional Natural Viibration Characteristics of Rotors)

  • A method to estimate the torsional critical speed for practical rotors has been developed in this study. First, the rotor with a uniform shaft segment is modeled for undamped torsional motion analysis, while satisfying all the boundary conditions. This eventually generates governing equations for the torsional critical speeds of the system. The set of governing equations has the form of a sparse and banded matrix. The elements of banded matrix can be arranged in partitions, which correspond to the specific boundary of the rotor. This permits an automatic generation of the system matrix using a computer. In order to calculate the determinant generated by the simultaneous equations, which leads to the torsional critical speed, a recurring numerical algorithm for a (3*4) sub-matrix has been used. This numerical algorithm practically examines successive (3*4) sub-matrix, one at a time, instead of treating a huge matrix. The output of the program provides the mode shapes with continuous curves. The method has been implemented to three rotors given as examples : a simple rotor, Prohl's rotor, and Macmillan rotor.

저온소결 PCW-PMN-PZT 세라믹스를 적용한 압전변압기의 전기적 특성 (Electrical Characteristics of Piezoelectric Transformer using Low Temperature Sintering PCW-PMN-PZT Ceramics)

  • In this study, piezoelectric transformer was manufactured at the sintering temperature of $950^{\circ}C$, and then the feasibility of application to low temperature sintering piezoelectric transformers was investigated by evaluating the electrical characteristics of it. The voltage ratio of piezoelectric transformer showed the maximum value at the resonant frequency of input part, and increased according to the increase of load resistance. The output power and efficiency of piezoelectric transformer showed the superior properties when the output impedance of it coincides with the load resistance. Piezoelectric transformer manufactured at the low temperature of $950^{\circ}C$ showed the heat generation less than $20^{\circ}C$ at the output power of 30 W, and stable driving characteristics.

Epstein-Barr Virus-Associated Classical Hodgkin Lymphoma and Its Therapeutic Strategies

  • Over the past few decades, our understanding of the epidemiology and immunopathogenesis of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) has made enormous advances. Consequently, the treatment of HL has changed significantly, rendering this disease of the most curable human cancers. To date, about 80% of patients achieve long-term disease-free survival. However, therapeutic challenges still remain, particularly regarding the salvage strategies for relapsed and refractory disease, which need further identification of better prognostic markers and novel therapeutic schemes. Although the precise molecular mechanism by which Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) contributes to the generation of malignant cells present in HL still remains unknown, current increasing data on the role of EBV in the pathobiology of HL have encouraged people to start developing novel and specific therapeutic strategies for EBV-associated HL. This review will provide an overview of therapeutic approaches for acute EBV infection and the classical form of HL (cHL), especially focusing on EBV-associated HL cases.

가치 기반 수용모델에 기반한 지능형 개인비서 서비스 사용에 대한 실증 연구 (An Empirical Study on the Use of Intelligent Personal Secretary Service Based on Value-based Acceptance Model)

  • Recently, individuals are interested in a variety of products and services based on artificial intelligence. Among those products and services, an intelligent personal assistants are attracting many attention from IT companies as a next generation platform. Thus, the main purpose of this study is to investigate effects of intelligent personal assistant's benefits on user's value formation and adoption behavior based on Value-based Adoption Model. In addition, the moderating effect of personal innovativeness is examined through empirical analysis. Based on the analysis with the data from actual users, the results show that usefulness, enjoyment, technicality and cost advantage have significant influences on perceived value and correspondingly have an effect on intention to adopt. Personal innovativeness is related to the relationship between perceived value and intention to adopt. These findings may provide important insights to the relevant field regarding the use and spread of intelligent personal assistants.

The importance of post-thaw subculture for standardizing cellular activity of fresh or cryopreserved mouse embryonic stem cells

  • Objective: Remarkable difference in cellular activity was found between early and late subpassaged embryonic stem cell (ESCs) lines, which can be created by subtle changes in cell manipulation protocol. This study subsequently examined whether post-thaw subculture of early subpassaged ESC lines could further affect the activity of the ESCs. Methods: Fresh (as a control treatment) or cryopreserved F1 hybrid (B6CBAF1) early ESC lines (C57BL/6xCBA) of the 4 (P4) or the 19 passage (P19) were subcultured once, twice or six times under the same condition. The post-thaw survival of the ESCs was monitored after the post-treatment subculture and the ability of cell proliferation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, apoptosis and mitochondrial ATP synthesis was subsequently examined. Results: Regardless of the subculture number, P19 ESCs showed better (p<0.05) doubling time and less ATP production than P4 ESCs and such difference was not influenced by fresh or cryopreservation. The difference between P4 and P19 ESC lines became decreased as the post-treatment subculture was increased and the six times subculture eliminated such difference. Similarly, transient but prominent difference in ROS production and apoptotic cell number was detected between P4 and P19 ESCs only at the 1st subculture after treatment, but no statistical differences between two ESC lines was detected in other observations. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that post-thaw subculture of ESCs under the same environment is recommended for standardizing their cellular activity. The activity of cell proliferation ability and ATP synthesis can be used as parameters for quality control of ESCs.

쌈용 상추 품종 개발을 위한 다수성, 우수 계통 육성 (Breeding of High Yield and Elite Lines for Development 'Ssam' Lettuce)

  • 본 연구는 내병 만추대이고 적색 발현이 양호한 양친을 중심으로 11개 교배조합을 작성하였다. 선발된 계통은 F2 42조합 137계통, F3 4조합 17계통, F4 11조합 27계통, F5 7조합 30계통, F6 1조합 2계통, F7 3조합 8계통 등 90조합 221계통을 선발하였다. 선발한 계통 중 만추대이면서 색택이 좋은 파종번호 5007, 5014, 6004, 6005, 6021, 6023, 7001, 7002, 7006, 7007, 7010, 7011, 7015, 7018, 7019, 7021 등 17계통은 생산력검정을 하였다. 이중에서 유망한 7001, 7002, 7011, 7018, 7022 등 5개 계통을 선발하였다.
