A new cable-supported bridge model consisting of suspension parts, self-anchored cable-stayed parts and earth-anchored cable-stayed parts is presented. The new bridge model can be used for suspension bridges, cable-stayed bridges, cable-stayed suspension bridges, and partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridges by varying parameters. Based on the assumption that each structural member is in either an axial compressive or tensile state, and the stress in each member is equal to the allowable stress of the material, the material quantity for each component is calculated. By introducing the unit cost of each type of material, the estimation formula for the cost of the new bridge model is developed. Numerical examples show that the results from the estimation formula agree well with that from the real projects. The span limit of cable supported bridge depends on the span-to-height ratio and the density-to-strength ratio of cables. Finally, a parametric study is illustrated aiming at the relations between three key geometrical parameters and the cost of the bridge model. The optimization of the new bridge model indicates that the self-anchored cable-stayed part is always the dominant part with the consideration of either the lowest total cost or the lowest unit cost. It is advisable to combine all three mentioned structural parts in super long span cable supported bridges to achieve the most excellent economic performance.
With the growing demand for metallic dampers in engineering practice, it is urgent to establish a reasonable approach to evaluating the mechanical performance of metallic dampers under seismic excitations. This paper introduces an effective method for parameter identification of the modified Bouc-Wen model and its application to evaluating the fatigue performance of metallic dampers (MDs). The modified Bouc-Wen model which eliminates the redundant parameter is used to describe the hysteresis behavior of MDs. Relations between the parameters of the modified Bouc-Wen model and the mechanical performance parameters of MDs are studied first. A modified Genetic Algorithm using real-integer hybrid coding with relative fitness as well as adaptive crossover and mutation rates (called RFAGA) is then proposed to identify the parameters of the modified Bouc-Wen model. A reliable approach to evaluating the fatigue performance of the MDs with respect to the Chinese Code for Seismic Design of Buildings (GB 50011-2010) is finally proposed based on the research results. Experimental data are employed to demonstrate the process and verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. It is shown that the RFAGA is able to converge quickly in the identification process, and the simulation curves based on the identification results fit well with the experimental hysteresis curves. Furthermore, the proposed approach is shown to be a useful tool for evaluating the fatigue performance of MDs with respect to the Chinese Code for Seismic Design of Buildings (GB 50011-2010).
The sensitivity of Nash model parameters is analyzed about characteristic velocities considering geomorphological dispersion in the present study. And changing shape of IUH compared and analyzed as variation of characteristic velocities through numerical experiment. Application watersheds are selected 4 subwatersheds which are located at main stream of Bocheong basin. The mean and variance of hillslope and stream path length are estimated in each watershed with GIS. And Nash model parameters are estimated with moments of path lengths and characteristic velocities. The changing trend about IUH which is derived Nash model parameters are compared as variation of characteristic velocities. The Major results of this study are summarized as follows. The Nash model parameters sensitively present changes about hillslope characteristic velocity. And the effect of the peak discharge and shape of recession in IUH dominate with hillslope's characteristic velocity, the effect of the peak time and shape of ascension in IUH dominate with channel's characteristic velocity.
The buckling response of a single-layered graphene sheet (SLGS) embedded in visco-Pasternak's medium is presented. The nonlocal first-order shear deformation elasticity theory is used for this purpose. The visco-Pasternak's medium is considered by adding the damping effect to the usual foundation model which characterized by the linear Winkler's modulus and Pasternak's (shear) foundation modulus. The SLGS be subjected to distributive compressive in-plane edge forces per unit length. The governing equilibrium equations are obtained and solved for getting the critical buckling loads of simply-supported SLGSs. The effects of many parameters like nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio, Winkler-Pasternak's foundation, damping coefficient, and mode numbers on the buckling analysis of the SLGSs are investigated in detail. The present results are compared with the corresponding available in the literature. Additional results are tabulated and plotted for sensing the effect of all used parameters and to investigate the visco-Pasternak's parameters for future comparisons.
It is a difficult task to estimate parameters in even a simple stock assessment model such as a surplus production model, using only data about temporal catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) (or survey index) and fishery yields. Such difficulty is exacerbated when time-varying parameters are treated as random effects (aka state variables). To overcome the difficulty, previous studies incorporated somewhat subjective assumptions (e.g., B1=K) or informative priors of parameters. A key is how to build an objective joint prior of parameters, reducing subjectivity. Given the limited data on temporal CPUEs and fishery yields from 1999-2020 for common squid Todarodes pacificus, we built a joint prior of only two parameters, intrinsic growth rate (r) and carrying capacity (K), based on the resilience level of the population (Froese et al., 2017), and used a Bayesian state-space production assessment model. We used template model builder (TMB), a R package for implementing the assessment model, and estimating all parameters in the model. The predicted annual biomass was in the range of 0.76×106 to 4.06×106 MT, the estimated MSY was 0.13×106 MT, the estimated r was 0.24, and the estimated K was 2.10×106 MT.

Model parameters of the WASP5 applied to Saemanguem lake were estimated. The methodology is based on grouping water quality constituents and relevant parameters and successively estimating each group of parameters by a trial-and-error procedure. Chlorophyll-a, nitrogen cycles, phosphorus cycles, BOD and DO were simulated at the complexity level 4. The Saemangeum basin divided into a number of unit sub-watershed. And a water budget model analysis with 22 years from 1975 to 1996 year was examined. In this paper, input data at upstream boundaries of model was made to determine seasonally-averaged flow rate through water budget analysis. Calibration and verification of the model were used seasonal average of water quality measurements in 1997 and 1998 years. Grouping water quality constituents and associated parameters proved to be efficient in estimating a number of model parameters. From the results of model calibration and verification, it was found that quantitative evaluations of nonpoint source for organic matters are essential.
Complex structures are usually assembled from several substructures with joints connecting them together. These joints have significant effects on the dynamic behavior of the assembled structure and must be accurately modeled. In structural analysis, these joints are often simplified by assuming ideal boundary conditions. However, the dynamic behavior predicted on the basis of the simplified model may have significant errors. This has prompted the researchers to include the effect of joint stiffness in the structural model and to estimate the stiffness parameters using inverse dynamics. In the present work, structural joints have been modeled as a pair of translational and rotational springs and frequency equation of the overall system has been developed using sub-structure synthesis. It is shown that using first few natural frequencies of the system, one can obtain a set of over-determined system of equations involving the unknown stiffness parameters. Method of multi-linear regression is then applied to obtain the best estimate of the unknown stiffness parameters. The estimation procedure has been developed for a two parameter joint stiffness matrix.
The modal parameter estimations of linear multi-degree-of-freedom structural dynamic systems are carried out in time domain. For this purpose, the equation of motion is transformed into the auto regressive and moving average model with auxiliary stochastic input(ARMAX) model. The parameters of the ARMAX model are estimated by using the sequential prediction error method. Then the modal parameters of the system are obtained thereafter. Experimental results are given for a 3-story budding model subject to ground exitations.
This study investigates the need of calibrating a nodal network ventilation simulation model (CONTAMW 2.4). For this purpose, the series of ventilation experiments were conducted and then compared to simulation outputs from an uncalibrated simulation model, resulting in a significant difference between two. Hence, an optimization routine was employed to estimate unknown parameters in the simulation model. In the paper, the authors presents 1.3 unknown parameters with the validated simulation model. It was found that the model with estimated unknown parameters predicts the ventilation phenomena accurately.
We present a dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) model of a generalized class of nonstationary birth-death processes. The model includes birth and death rate parameters that are randomly selected from a known discrete set of values. We present an on-line algorithm to obtain optimal estimates of the parameters. We provide a simulation of real-time characterization of load traffic estimation using our DBN approach.
