A Study on the Activation Plan of 4-H Club in Korea (농촌 청소년조직(4-H)의 활성화 방안에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop plans for activating the 4-H clubs in Korea. Data for this study were collected from 125 members in 4-H clubs and 140 extension educators who participated in 4-H activity. Total of 265 responses were analyzed after data screening. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS) for Windows for the personal computer were used to analyze the data. Frequency, percentage, ANOVA, and LSD test for post-hoc interpretation were employed to analyze the data with a statistical significance level of .05. Based on the conclusions of this study, following recommendations were offered: To activate rural youth organizations, especially 4-H clubs in Korea the following measures should be included in the plans for activation; 1) To classify membership into student and non-student clubs to focus on the needs of active members; 2) To establish clear objectives for club activities; 3) To enhance field-oriented operation of clubs; 4) To develop various activity programs that members could be fascinated; 5) To promote subject matter specialists in order to support club activities effectively; and 6) To clarify functions and roles of extension service centers and non-governmental organizations in order to support club activites.

  • The objectives of this study were to explore to upbringing system for the future farmers of the 4-H Clubs, future farmers organization and the Center for 4-H in the USA to suggest some implications to 4-H programs in Korea. To train future leaders in agricultural and agri-business areas leaders in the United States felt the need to create various organizations such as 4-H Club, Future Farmers of America (FFA), Young Farmer Association (YFA), and cooperate each other. The members in future farmer's groups benefit from opportunities and involvement of farming and agri-related activities and contribute to improve their communities. One of them, the 4-H Club remains strong in the country covering young people as members and adult as volunteer leaders. Youth in 4-H learn by doing, and members find opportunities for leadership. 4-H members contribute to their family, community, and country in meaningful ways to make a difference. The Center for 4-H has provided a range of challenging opportunities around the arts, sciences, environment, technology, business, animals, foods, and health while always stressing leadership and citizenship for 4-H members. The Center has been supporting research, teaching, and outreach in community based non-formal youth development education. The Center is particularly interested in youth development opportunities including foster resiliency, promote safe and healthy behaviors, and support youth in communities in various ways.

Chemical Characteristics of Golf Course Soils in Kyonggi Province (경기도 골프장의 코스별 토양의 화학적 특성)

  • Chemical characteristics of soils were investigated in three golf courses of Kwanak, Gold and Korea Country Club with different open year. The soil samples were collected in tee, fairway and rough. There were ranges of 4.80~5.55 in pH, 3.68~5.39% inorganic matter, 0.10~0.25% in total nitrogen, 5.63~45.64ppm in available phosphorus, 0.80~1.7lme /l00g in exchangeable Ca, 0.09~0 42me /l00g in exchangeable Mg, 0.03~0.O9me /l00g in exchangeable Na, and 0.06~0.l4me /l00g in exchangeable K. The pH was significant with golf club(P<0.05) and positively correlated with exchangeable Ca and exchangeable Mg(P<0.0l).

  • Integumentary structure of the amberjack, Seriola dumerili, was examined by light and transmission electron microscopy. Integument of the amberjack consists of epidermal and dermal layers. The epidermal thickness is about $28.32{\mu}m$. The epidermal layer could be classified into superficial, intermediate, and basal layers by morphology and position of the supporting cells. Secretory cells of the epidermal layer were classified into mucous cells and club cells in the amberjack. Mucous cells contained acidic mucous and were alcian-blue positive with AB-PAS (pH 2.5) reaction. The club cells contained well-developed rough endoplasmic reticula and large central vacuole. Also, filament-rich cells were identified in the epidermal layer. The dermal layer consists mainly of collagenous fiber, and it contains fibrocytes and pigment cells. The cytoplasm of fibrocyte had a well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum. The pigment cells contained electron-dense melanin granules.

  • A one-pot efficient procedure for the synthesis of 2,4,5-triaryl-1H-imidazole derivatives in good to excellent yields by reaction between hexamethyldisilazane and arylaldehydes, benzyl alcohols, benzyl halides in the presence of molecular iodine has been developed. The remarkable advantages of this method are the simple workup procedure, high yields of products, and the availability of reagents.

A Study on the Present Condition and Development Directions for Youth Allied Organization (청소년관련단체의 현황과 발전방향)

  • The objectives of this study were to explore the present condition and development direction of youth allied organizations such as Korea 4-H Club Federation, Clover Alumni Association and Korea 4-H Association. Researcher developed questionnaires were used to identify historical changes, present condition and development directions of the youth allied organizations. The data were collected from 105 purposively sampled representatives from the youth allied organizations, and SPSS/WIN program was employed to analyze the data. Major problems of the youth allied organization, according to the respondents, were financial difficulties and lack of full-time employee for the organizations. It was recommended that more full-time employees would be necessary for further development of youth allied organizations. Securing wider membership throughout the country and financial security were recommended for development of the youth allied organizations.

  • Youth will undergo many turning points in their times, and get opportunities to promote their physical, cognitive, social and affective development by participating in various programs. The purpose of this study were to analyze the farming 4-H club member's participation in camping activity and suggest the improving directions for camping programs. This research was carried out by review of literature and survey. The data were collected from 170 youth who participated in the 4-H camping activity in 2002. The major findings of the study were as follows; 1) The prior learning for camping activity affected the level of youth's camping satisfaction. 2) The rural youth expected that the camp fire and recreation program should be further improved. 3) To bring more youth's participation in the camping, time and place should be taken into consideration. 4) The 4-H members who decided to participate in the camping for themselves showed higher satisfaction.

Suppression of Rhizoctonia spp. by Antagonistic Microorganisms and Their Compatibility with Fungicides (길항미생물에 의한 Rhizoctonia spp.의 억제 및 길항미생물의 농약 혼용시 생존율)

  • 174 isolates of soil microorganisms were isolated from E-golf club from Apr.1997 through Oct. 1997. And 27 strains of them were selected through the inhihition test of mycelial growth. In the same period, soil-borne diesease pathogens, "Rhizoctonia", causing Large patch, Brown patch, Spring dead spot, and Yellow patch were isolated from the diseased areas in E-golf and S-golf club. The antagonistic activity of the strains against the pathogens was tested to select the excel-lent antagonists. In contact with the fungicides, the survivability of the antagonists was tested to assess the compatibility of the antagonists with the pesticides. The results were as follows: 1.Suppression of Rhizoctonia by Antagonists. Antagonistic activity of 27 strains against the pathogens was: tested in vitro. In the result, 3 isolates(B-7, B-15, B-41) of bacteria and 2 isolates(F-5, F-47) of fungi were superior to the rest. 2.Compatibility of the antagonists: with the fungicides: With 13 kinds of pesticides widely using Golf Club, Compatibility of 5 antagonists: were finally tested to select the strains: that mostly survived in contact with pesticides. In the results:, two of five strains: were selected : one strain was bacteria B-15, the other strain was fungi F-47. 24h after the mixing with pesticides:, these two strains were shown to survive at 90% level and these were identified as Bacillus and Trichoderma, respectively. And the most compatible pesticides: with the antagonists were shown to Polytoxin-D thirarn(s:urvivability 99.4%) and Validamycin-A (survivability 98.6%). Effect Verification of Wearable Assisting Wear for Increasing Golf Carry Distance (골프 비거리 증가를 위한 기능성 보조 웨어의 효과 검증)

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of developed assisting wear which maximize trunk(back) muscle's stretch-shortening effect during backswing and downswing for increasing golf ball carrying distance. Design and fabrication of assistive wear were performed based on the results of analyzed data of trunk EMG activity from the golf drive swings of elite professional male golfers during back swing and downswing phases. After the prototype of wear was produced, surface EMG and Flight scope tests were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the wear for increasing distance to the professional golfers. Results indicated that wearing trial showed significant longer carry distance than the non-wearing trial(p<.001). The carry distance of wearing trial showed an average 229 m compared to the non-wearing trial, the average 225 m. The swing with wearing also produced significantly faster ball speed than the trial without wearing(p<.05). Average 245 Km/h and 244 Km/h were produced for the swing with and without wearing trails, respectively. EMG results also indicated that the muscle activity of left psoas was significantly increased for wearing trial during downswing and near the impact. Thus, this may affect positively to increase club head speed. The activity of the left latissimus dorsi was dramatically increased during the final stage of swing. This generates elongation effect for longer follow-through and increased impulse between club and ball so eventually valid assistance to increase carry distance. Therefore, the developed assisting wear was proved to be effective tool for increasing golf ball carry distance with maximizing trunk(back) muscle's stretch-shortening effect during backswing and downswing.

Soil-blending Effect of Eggshell Powder on the Control of Club root Disease and the Growth of Chinese Cabbage in the Field (배추 무사마귀병 발병 억제 및 생육증진을 위한 달걀껍질 토양혼화처리 효과)

  • Before transplanting Chinese cabbage seedlings, two kinds of eggshell powder were blended into the soil of cabbage field where the club root pathogen, Plasmodiophora brassicae, was infested. The incidence of clubroot disease, the shoot and root growth of cabbages, and soil pH were examined four times at 10 to 13 days interval from transplanting Chinese cabbage. As results, the cabbages treated with eggshell powder without membrane showed the fastest growth in above ground part, and the lowest disease index for clubroot disease. The cabbages treated with eggshell powder with membrane showed better growth than the cabbages of non-treated check, but lower growth than those treated with eggshell powder without membrane. Soil pH started to increase from 3 weeks after soil blending of eggshell powder, and it reached to above 8.0. However, the soil pH of non-treated check stayed at around 6.8. In the experiment to compare the effect of eggshell powder with other calcium compounds, soil-blending of $CaCO_3$ resulted the lowest disease incidence of 1.7 and the registered fungicide, 'flusulfamide', and the resistant variety 'CR Green cabbage' followed with the incidence of 1.9. Cabbages of non-treated check scored the highest disease incidence, 3.4, and that of eggshell powder without membrane was as high as 2.7. However, the growth of Chinese cabbage showed the different pattern to the disease incidence. Chinese cabbages treated with eggshell without membrane recorded the highest average growth, around 2.1 kg. On the other hand, the average growth of CR Green Chinese cabbage was about 2.0 kg, that of flusulfamide-treatment plot was 1.7, and that of non-treated check was as low as 1.3 kg. Soil blending of eggshell powder without membrane did not inhibit the development of clubroot, but increased the growth of cabbage to a great extent. Therefore, it was confirmed that soil blending of eggshell powder before transplanting makes the Chinese cabbage culture possible even in the field infested with club root pathogen.
