  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of treadmill exercise treadmill exercise (TE) and environmental enrichment (EE) interventions on cognitive function, muscle function, and the expression of tight junction proteins in an Alzheimer's disease (AD) animal model. To create the AD animal model, aluminum chloride (AlCl3) was administered for 90 days (40mg/kg/day), while simultaneously exposing the animals to TE (10-12m/min, 40-60min/day) or EE. The results showed that cognitive impairment and muscle dysfunction induced by AlCl3 administration were alleviated by TE and EE. Furthermore, TE and EE reduced the increased expression of β-amyloid(Aβ), alpha-synuclein, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) proteins observed in AD pathology. Additionally, TE and EE significantly increased the expression of decreased adhesive adjacent proteins (Occludin, Claudin-5, and ZO-1) induced by AlCl3 administration. Lastly, correlation analysis between Aβ protein and tight junction proteins showed negative correlations (Occludin: r=-0.853, p=0.001; Claudin-5: r=-0.352, p=0.915; ZO-1: r=-0.424, p=0.0390). In conclusion, TE or EE interventions are considered effective exercise methods that partially alleviate pathological features of AD, improving cognitive and muscle function.

  • This study was conducted to construct a empirical yield table for Pinus densiflora in real forest. Since existing normal yield tables have been derived by studying and analyzing communities in ideal environment for tree growth, those tables provide more over-estimated values than ones from real forest. Because of this, there are some difficulties to apply the tables to empirical forest except for normal forest. In this study, therefore, we estimated stand growth for real forest on P. densiflora as the representative species of conifers. We used 1,957 sample plot data of P. densiflora in central Korea from National Forest Inventory (NFI) system, and analyzed through estimation, recovery and prediction in order by using Weibull function as a diameter distribution model. Weilbull and Schumacher models were applied for estimating mean DBH and mean basel area and it was found that the site index for P. densiflora in central Korea ranges from 8 to 14 at reference age 30. According to site 12 in the stand yield table, the Mean Annual Increment (MAI) of P. densiflora was $4.42m^3/ha$ at 30 years of age. Compared to existing volume table constructed before, it is showed that MAI of this study were lower. According to the paired t-test that is conducted with the gap of volume values between normal forest and real forest by site index and age, the P-value was less than 0.001 which is recognized to have a statistically significant difference. Based on the results in this study, it is considered to be helpful for practical management and management policy on P. densiflora in central Korea.

  • Laboratory experiments were conducted to study the effects of pH and salt level on the soil sorption equilibrium of pentachlorophenol (PCP) which is hydrophobic and ionogenic. Experimental results indicated that the sorption equilibrium constant (Kp) of PCP increased with decreasing pH. A quantitative sorption model involving linear isotherms was estabilished to predict the pH effect on the PCP sorption equilibrium over the pH range from 3 to 8. The model prediction was in good agreement with the experimental data. Also, the Kp increased with salt concentration over the entire pH range. At added salt levels less than 0.1M, increase in Kp was larger than when the added levels were higher than 0.1M. Salt might increase the PCP sorption by inducing 'salting out-effect' or by forming deprotonated PCP-cation ion pairs such as PCP$\^$-/K$\^$+/. Taking the pH range (5-8) and the salt content (up to 50 g/L) in the groundwater of Metropolitan landfill sites into consideration, the results indicated that the retardation factor of PCP in this area might range from 3 to 550 depending upon pH and salt content.

  • The objective of the research stated here was aimed at providing the information needed to establish the Korean Seismic Design Code Recommendations and Guides for precast concrete (P.C) large panel apartment buildings. This was accomplished by investigation and analysis of the response of P.C large panel structures subjected to shaking table excitation simulating earthquake ground motion. one of the test specimens used was 1/3-scaled 3-story box P.C model provided by Sam-Hwan Camus Corporation. The 4m $\times$4m shaking table was used to simulate the earthquake ground motion. the employed input accelerogram was the one recorded as Taft N21E component and the peak ground acceleration(PGA) was scaled depending on the desired level of seismic severity and the time according to dynamic similitude rule. Based on results obtained from shaking table test of this P.C model, the following conclusions were drawn . (1) As far as test specimen is concerned, the seismic safety factors turns out to be 7~8. (2)P.C model has damping ratio of about8% which is twice larger than in-situ R.C. structure. And (3)this model has global displacement ductility ratio of 2~3 through the energy dissipation by opening and sliding of joints.

  • Purpose: The main aim of this study was to compare and analyze expression profiles of microRNAs (miRNAs) to establish miRNA signature of Fabry nephropathy related epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT). Methods: Expression profiles of miRNAs in kidney tissue samples and cell lines from normal and Fabry disease mouse model were examined by miRNA expression microarray analysis followed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis (qRT-PCR). Results: In the miRNA expression microarray analysis of Fabry mouse kidney tissues compared to wild type mouse, 5 and 3 miRNAs among 1,247 miRNAs examined were up- and down-regulated, respectively. Among them, miR-149-5p was down-regulated about 2-fold in Fabry kidney samples. The down-regulations of miR-149-5p were observed in kidney tissues of under 35 week-old-Fabry mice. However, this down-regulation was not observed in kidney tissues of 42 week-old Fabry mice. In SV40 MES 13 cells, mouse mesangial cells, treated with globotriaosylsphingosine (lyso-Gb3), miR-149-5p was also downregulated. The down-regulation of miR-149-5p induced up-regulation of its target genes related to EMT. Conclusion: The miRNA expression array and qRT-PCR results show that miR-149-5p expression was decreased in kidney tissues of Fabry mice compared to wild type mice under 35 weeks of age. Along with the observation of miR-149-5p expression in Fabry disease cell models, these results indicate that the down-regulated miR-149-5p were related to the biological response of mesangial cells to lyso-Gb3 and also have influence to the transcriptional up-regulation of its target genes. These results suggest miR-149-5p might play important roles in the Fabry nephropathy.

  • A P2P is a method that can share and exchange on digital resources through a direct connection on personnel without a central server. In this paper, we apply a P2P technology to a traditional electronic commerce method so that a seller and a customer can perform a commercial transaction through a direct communication. As such a result, we propose a new e-Commerce model on P2P environment to assure fairness in commercial transactions. To achieve our goal, we put an escrow server which is responsible for guarantee fair contents delivery and payment for the contents between a seller and a customer. When a customer buys content, he first obtains reputation values implicating reliability for the content and refers to these values to determine purchase. The proposed scheme, we can improve the reliability for the purchasing content and provide the fairness to both a seller and a customer simultaneously.

  • To predict behaviors of offshore wind turbines which are highly laterally loaded structures and to design them rationally, evaluating the soil-foundation interaction is important. Nowadays, there are many soil modeling methods for structural analysis of general structures subjected to vertical loads, but using the methods without any consideration for design of a monopile foundation is eschewed because it might cause wrong structural design due to the deferent loading state. In this paper, we identify the differences of the member forces and displacements by design methods. The results show that fixed end method is barely suitable for monopile design in terms of checking the serviceability because it underestimate the lateral displacement. Fixed end method and stiffness matrix method underestimate the member forces, whereas virtual fixed end method overestimates them. The results of p-y curve method and coefficient of subgrade reaction method are similar to the results of 3D soil modeling method, and 2D soil modeling method overestimates the displacement and member forces as compared with other methods.

  • This study examined the removal rate of mixed heavy metals from aqueous solution using recycled aggregate. The recycled aggregate is favorable for the absorbent because it contains about 95% (CaO, $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$), which are major ingredient of adsorbent for heavy metal. The kinetic data presented that the slow course of adsorption follows the Pseudo first and second order models. The equilibrium data were well fitted by the Langmuir model and showed the affinity order: $Cu^{2+}$ > $Pb^{2+}$ > $$Zn^{2+}{\simeq_-}Ni^{2+}$$ > $Cd^{2+}$. The results also showed that adsorption rate slightly increased with increasing pH from 6 to 10. Moreover, this trend is similar to results obtained as function of loading amount of recycled aggregate. Meanwhile, an unit adsorption rate was slightly decreased. From these results, it was concluded that the absorbents can be successfully used the removal of the heavy metals from the aqueous solutions.

  • Purpose. The aim of this study was (1) to compare the reverse engineering technique with other existing measurement methods and (2) to analyze the effect of implant angulations and impression coping types on implant impression accuracy with reverse engineering technique. Materials and methods. Three different master models were fabricated and the distance between the two implant center points in parallel master model was measured with different three methods; digital caliper measurement (Group DC), optical measuring (Group OM), and reverse engineering technique (Group RE). The 90 experimental models were fabricated with three types of impression copings for the three different implant angulation and the angular and distance error rate were calculated. One-way ANOVA was used for comparison among the evaluation methods (P < .05). The error rates of experimental groups were analyzed by two-way ANOVA (P < .05). Results. While there was significant difference between Group DC and RE (P < .05), Group OM had no significant difference compared with other groups (P > .05). The standard deviations in reverse engineering were much lower than those of digital caliper and optical measurement. Hybrid groups had no significant difference from the pick-up groups in distance error rates (P > .05). Conclusion. The reverse engineering technique demonstrated its potential as an evaluation technique of 3D accuracy of impression techniques.
