Aluminum alloys are widely utilized in diverse industries, such as automobiles, aerospace, and architecture, owing to their high specific strength and resistance to oxidation. However, to meet the increasing demands of the industry, it is necessary to design new aluminum alloys with excellent properties. Thus, a new method is required to efficiently test additively manufactured aluminum alloys with various compositions within a short period during the alloy design process. In this study, a combinatory approach using a direct energy deposition system for metal 3D printing process with a dual feeder was employed. Two types of aluminum alloy powders, namely Al6061 and Al-12Cu, were utilized for the combinatory test conducted through 3D printing. Twelve types of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys were manufactured during this combinatory test, and the relationship between their microstructures and properties was investigated.

This paper presents high performance MEMS passives using fully CMOS compatible, monolithically integrable 3-D RF MEMS processes for RF and microwave applications. The 3-D RF MEMS technology has been developed and investigated as a viable technological option, which can break the limit of the conventional IC technology. We have demonstrated the versatility of the technology by fabricating various 3-D thick-metal microstructures for RF and microwave applications, such as spiral/solenoid inductors, transformers, and transmission lines, with a vertical dimension of up to $100{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$. To the best of our knowledge, we report that we are the first to construct a fully integrated VCO with MEMS inductors, which has achieved a low phase noise of -124 dBc/Hz at 300 kHz offset from a center frequency of 1 GHz.
Microstereolithography technology is similar to the conventional stereolithography process and enables to fabricate a complex 3D microstructure. This is divided into scanning and projection type according to aiming at precision and fabrication speed. The scanning MSL fabricates each layer using position control of laser spot on the resin surface, whereas the projection MSL fabricates one layer with one exposure using a mask. In the projection MSL, DMD used to generate dynamic pattern consists of $1024{\times}768$ micromirrors which have $13.68{\mu}m$ per side. The fabrication range and resolution are determined by the field of view of the DMD and the magnification of the projection lens. If using the projection lens with high power, very fine microstructures can be fabricated. In this paper, the projection MSL system adapted to a large surface for array-type fabrication is presented. This system covers the meso range, which is defined as the intermediate range between micro and macro, with a resolution of a few ${\mu}m$. The fabrication of array-type microstructures has been demonstrated to verify the performance of implemented system.
Mechanical properties and microstructures of medium carbon high manganese steels were investigated in terms of alloying elements such as Mn, C contents, and heat treatment condition. Austenite volume fraction was increased with increasing Mn content, leading to hardness decrease in the range of Mn content of above 10% after quenching and tempering. Such results are also supported by microstructural analysis and X-ray diffraction in that the increase in mangaese content results in the increase in austenite fraction. Studies on tempering condition indicated that not only hardness and tensile strength but also charpy impact values were reduced as tempering temperature were raised in the range of $250^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. It was also observed that fracture mode was changed from dimple to intergranular fracture. Such results are thought to be due to very fine carbide precipitation or impurity segreagation at grain boundaries as tempering temperature goes up. Heat treatment of Fe-5Mn-2Si-1Al-0.4C can be optimized by austenitizing at $850^{\circ}C$, air cooling and tempering at $250^{\circ}C$, resulting in 1950 MPa in Tensile strength, 17% in elongation and 23.3 $J/cm^2$ in charpy impact energy with high work hardening characteristics.
Recently, the trend of research in hard coating is concentrate on developing the process of ionization rate under low operating pressure, to get the thin film with high adhesion and dense microstructures. In this study ionization rate enhancement type PVD process using permanent magnet is developed, which enhances the ionization rate by confining the plasma suppressing the wall loss of electron. By the result to investigate the characteristic of glow discharge, the ionization rate of this process is enhanced about twice as high as that of triod BARE process (about 26%), and more dense TiN microstructures are obtained in this process. Cylindrical ion energy analyzer is made and attached in front of a quadrupole mass filter for the analysis of the energy distribution of reactive gas and activated gas ions from the plasma zone. To analyze the operation mechanism of ion energy analyzer, computer simulation is performed by calculation the electric field environment using finite element method. By these analyses of ion energy distribution of outcoming ions from the plasma zone, it is found that magnetic field enhances ion kinetic energy as well as ionization rate. The other results of this study is that the foundation of feed-back system is constructed, which automatically control the partial pressure of reactive gas. In can be possible by recording the data of mass spectrum and ion energy analysis using A-D converter.
The influence of subsequent annealing treatment on the dynamic deformation and the fracture behavior of submicrocrystalline Al-4.4%Mg alloy is investigated in this study. After inducing an effective strain of 8 via equal-channel angular pressing at $200^{\circ}C$, most of the grains are considerably reduced to nearly equiaxed grains of $0.3{\mu}m$ in size. With an increment of various subsequent heat treatments for 1 hour, resultant microstructures are found to be fairly stable at temperatures up to $200^{\circ}C$, suggesting that static recovery will be dominantly operative, whereas grain growth is pronounced above $250^{\circ}C$. The results of tensile tests show that yield and ultimate tensile strength decrease, but elongation-to-failure and strain hardening rate increase with an increase in annealing temperatures. The dynamic deformation and the fracture behavior retrieved with a series of torsional tests are explored with respect to annealed microstructures. Such mechanical response is analyzed in relation to resultant microstructure and fracture mode.

The effects of $Nd_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ addition on the microstructures and microwave dielectic properties of $BaO-Nd_2O_3-TiO_2$ system were investigated. $BaNd_2Ti_4O_{12}$ or $BaNd_2Ti_{5}O_{14}$ phases were observed for compositions based on BaO/$Nd_2O_3$ = 1 ratio. The compositions deviated from $BaO/Nd_2O_3=1$ ratio were composed of major phases of $BaNd_2Ti_4O_{12}$ or $BaNd_2Ti_5O_{14}$, and the compound of $Nd_2O_3$ and $TiO_2(Nd_2Ti_2O_7)$ or that of BaO and $TiO_2(BaTi_4O_9)$. The microstructure of ceramic with $BaO{\cdot}Nd_2O_3{\cdot}4TiO_2$ composition varied from spherical grains to needlelike grains with increasing sintering temperature. With increasing $Nd_2O_3$, the optimum sintering temperature with maximum density increased, and the dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}_r$) and quality factor(Q) decreased due to the formation of secondary phases. With increasing $TiO_2$, the optimum sintering temperature and the dielectric constant decreased with increased Q value. And the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency, ${\tau}_f$ shifted toward positive direction. The dielectric ceramics with $BaO/Nd_2O_3=1$ showed Q values of above 2000 and dielectric constants of above 80 at 3GHz.
Recently, products that a have 3-dimensional(3D) micro structure have been in wide use. To fabricate these 3D micro structures, several methods, such as stereo lithography, reflow process, and diffuser lithography, have been used. However, these methods are either very complicated, have limitations in terms of patterns dimensions or need expensive components. To overcome these limitations, we fabricated various 3D micro structures in one step using a pair of diffusers that diffract the incident beam of UV light at wide angles. In the experiment, we used positive photoresist to coat the Si substrate. A pair of diffusers(ground glass diffuser, opal glass diffuser) with Gaussian and Lambertian scattering was placed above the photomask in the passage of UV light in the photolithography equipment. The incident rays of UV light diffracted twice at wider angles while passing through the diffusers. After exposure, the photoresist was developed fabricating the desired 3D micro structure. These micro structures were analyzed using FE-SEM and 3D-profiler data. As a result, this dual diffuser lithography(DDL) technique enabled us to fabricate various microstructures with different dimensions by just changing the combination of diffusers, making this technology an efficient alternative to other complex techniques.
The high-temperature oxidation behavior of ZrSi2 used as a coating material for nuclear fuel cladding was investigated for developing accident-tolerant fuel cladding of light water reactors. Bulk ZrSi2 samples were prepared by spark plasma sintering. In situ X-ray diffraction was conducted in air at 900, 1000, and 1100 ℃ for 20 h. The microstructures of the samples before and after oxidation were examined by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the oxide layer of zirconium silicide exhibited a layer-by-layer structure of crystalline ZrO2 and amorphous SiO2, and the high-temperature oxidation resistance was superior to that of Zircaloy-4 owing to the SiO2 layer formed. ZrSi2 was coated on the Zircaloy-4 tube surface using laser 3D printing, and the coated tube was oxidized for 2000 s at 1200 ℃ under a vapor/argon mixture atmosphere. The outer surface of the coated tube was hardly oxidized (10-30 ㎛), while the inner surface of the uncoated tube was significantly oxidized to approximately 300 ㎛.
SiC ultrafine particles of 1, 10, 20 and 30 vol% were dispersed in $\alpha$-Si3N4 matrix and hot-pressed under the condition of 30 MPa at 1800 and 190$0^{\circ}C$ respectively. Physical, mechanical properties and microstructures of sintered Si3N4-SiC nanocomposites were investigated. Flexural strength and density of Si3N4-10 vol% SiC nanocomposites hot-pressed at 190$0^{\circ}C$ represented the 1002 MPa and 97.9%T.D respectively, and it was confirmed as a remarkable improvement of 67% compared to Si3N4 monolith. Fracture toughness was shown as 7.2 MPa.m1/2 when the same composition was hot pressed at 180$0^{\circ}C$. This effect was supposed to be due to the improvement of microstructure by the adequate suppression of the excessive growth of Si3N4 grain with SiC nano-particles.
