  • The soil-structure interaction(SSI) effect should be considered to accurately assess the seismic response of structure constructed on soft soil site other than the hard bedrock. Recently, the demand of SSI analysis has increased due to strengthening of the regulatory guidelines of nuclear power plant such as the USNRC SRP 3.7.2. In this study an accuracy and running time of the KIESSI-3D program for large-scale 3D SSI analysis were investigated. The seismic SSI analysis using the KIESSI-3D program was performed for several examples of large-scale three-dimensional soil-structure interaction system. The analysis results were compared with those of the ACS/SASSI program. Good agreements in transfer functions at selected locations showd that KIESSI-3D yields accurate solution for large-scale SSI problem. Moreover, it was found that running speed of the KIESSI-3D for large-scale 3D SSI analysis is much faster than that of the ACS/SASSI about 30~2000 times.

  • The spectral properties, namely the circular dichroism, electric absorption and luminescence properties, of Λ- and Δ-[Ru(II)(1,10-phenanthroline)2benzodipyrido[b:3,2-h:2',3'-j]phenazine]2+ ([Ru(phen)2BDPPZ]2+) in the presence and absence of single stranded poly(dA) and poly(dT) were compared in this work. In the presence of single stranded DNAs, hypochromism in the absorption spectrum and significant changes in the circular dichroism spectrum in the ligand absorption band were apparent, indicating the strong interaction of the [Ru(phen)2BDPPZ]2+ complex with the single stranded DNAs. The luminescence intensity of the Ru(II) complex decreased stoichiometrically with increasing concentrations of the single stranded DNAs. All of these spectral changes were independent of the configuration of the Ru(II) complex and the nature of the DNA bases. Therefore, it is conceivable that both enantiomers of the [Ru(phen)2BDPPZ]2+ complex interact electrostatically with the negatively charged phosphate groups of DNA. However, the spectral properties of [Ru(II)(1,10-phenanthroline)3]2+ were not altered even in the presence of single stranded DNAs. Therefore, the size of the ligand involved in the interaction of the metal complex with the phosphate group of DNA may play an important role, even when the nature of the interaction is electrostatic.

  • In this study, fluid/structure coupled analyses have been conducted f3r 3-D stator and rotor configuration. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) has been developed in order to investigate fluid/structure responses of general stator-rotor configurations. To solve the fluid/structure coupled problems, fluid domains are modeled using the structural grid system with dynamic moving and local deforming techniques. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) and SST ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ turbulence models are solved for unsteady flow problems. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3-D turbine blades for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. Detailed fluid/structure analysis responses for stator-rotor interaction flow conditions are presented to show the physical performance and flow characteristics.

  • The purpose of this paper is the study on the characteristics of an inlet system with shock/boundary layer interactions by using various types of bumps which are substituted for the conventional bleeding system in supersonic inlet. in this study a comprehensive numerical analysis has been performed to understand the three-dimensional flow field including shock/boundary layer interaction and growth of turbulent boundary layer that might occur around a three-dimensional bump in a supersonic inlet. The characteristics of boundary layer seen in the current numerical simulations indicate the potential capability of a three-dimensional bump to control shock/boundary layer interaction in supersonic inlets.

  • In this study, the three-dimensional blood flow within the sac of KTAH(Korean artificial heart) is simulated using fluid-structure interaction model. The numerical method employed in this study is the finite element commercial package ADINA. The thrombus formation is one of the most critical problems in KTAH. High fluid shear stress or stagnated flow are believed to be the main causes of these disastrous phenomenon. We solved the fluid-structure interaction between the 3D blood flow in the sac and the surrounding sac material. The sac material is assumed as linear elastic material and the blood as incompressible viscous fluid. Numerical solutions show that high shear stress region and stagnated flow are found near the upper part of the sac and near the comer of the outlet during diastole stage.

  • This paper presents the interaction effect between tunneling and groundwater on tunnel behavior. A parametric study is then conducted on the various tunneling situations frequently encountered in Seoul area using a 3D stress-pore pressure coupled finite-element model with emphasis on the effects of ground and lining permeabilities. It is shown that the ground and lining responses are significantly influenced by the relative permeability between the ground and the lining, and that the circumferential pre-grouting is effective in minimizing the tunnelling and groundwater interaction.

  • In the virtual prototyping (VP) of digital products, it is important to provide the people involved in product development with the visualization and interaction of the products, and the simulation of their human machine interaction (HMI) behaviors in interactive 3D virtual environments. Especially, for the HMI behavior simulation, it is necessary to represent them properly and to play them back effectively according to user interaction in the virtual environments. In a conventional approach to HMI behavior simulation, user interface (UI) designers use UI design software tools to generate the HMI behavior of a digital product of interest. Due to lack of reusability of the HMI behavior, VP developers need to analyze and integrate it into a VP system for its simulation in a 3D virtual environment. As this approach hinders the effective communication between the UI designers and the VP developers, it is easy to create errors and thereby it takes significant time and effort especially when it is required to represent the HMI behavior to the finest level of detail. In order to overcome the shortcomings of the conventional approach, we propose an approach for representing the HMI behavior of a digital product using XML (eXtensible Markup Language) and for reusing it to perform the HMI behavior simulation in 3D virtual environments. Based on the approach, a VP system has been developed and applied for the design evaluation of various products. A case study about the design evaluation is given to show the usefulness of the proposed approach.

  • To bridge the research gap in the area of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we explore the correlation between the core technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the economic performance of companies. The results show that the technologies have a statistically significant positive (+) correlation with company sales. The size of the correlation is highest for 3D printing (139%), followed by big data (129%), cloud computing (127%), artificial intelligence (78%), and the internet of things (70%). We also found a statistically significant negative (-) interaction effect between the internet of things and 3D printing, cloud computing and big data, and cloud computing and 3D printing when examining the interaction effect of introducing core technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution on company sales. This paper represents an early attempt to examine the correlation between the core technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the economic performance of companies and may serve as a basis for further empirical research.

  • This paper presents dynamic infinite element formulations which have been developed for soil-structure interaction analysis both in frequency and in time domains by the present authors during the past twenty years. Axisymmetric, 2D and 3D layered half-space soil media were considered in the developments. The displacement shape functions of the infinite elements were established using approximate expressions of analytical solutions in frequency domain to represent the characteristics of multiple waves propagating into the unbounded outer domain of the media. The proposed infinite elements were verified using benchmark examples, which showed that the present formulations are very effective for the soil-structure interaction analysis either in frequency or in time domain. Example applications to actual interaction problems are also given to demonstrate the capability and versatility of the present methodology.
