  • This paper presents a phase-only modulation scheme for a three-dimensional (3-D) image matching system to improve optical efficiency of the system. The 3-D image matching system is based on the two mask heterodyne scanning. A hologram of the 3-D reference object is first created and then the phase of the hologram is extracted. The phase of the hologram is represented as one mask with the other mask being a plane wave. The superposition of each beam modulated by the two masks generated a scanning beam pattern. This beam pattern scans the 3-D target object to be recognized. The output of the scanning system gives out the correlation of the phase-only hologram of the reference object and the complex hologram of the target object. Since a hologram contains 3-D information of an object as a form of fringe pattern, the correlation of holograms matches whole 3-D aspect of the objects. Computer simulations are performed with additive gaussian noise and without noise for the complex hologram modulation scheme and the phase-only hologram modulation scheme. The computer simulation results show that the phase-only hologram modulation scheme improves the optical efficiency. Thus the system with the phase-only hologram modulation scheme is more robust than the system with the complex hologram modulation scheme.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm that increases the speed of generating a Fresnel hologram using a recursive addition operation covering the whole coordinate array of a digital hologram. The 3D object designed to calculate the digital hologram used the depth-map image produced by computer graphics (CG). The proposed algorithm is a technique that performs CGH (computer generated hologram) operation with only the recursive addition from the hologram's whole coordinates by analyzing the regularity between the 3D object and the digital hologram coordinates. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm increased operation speed by 30% over the technique using the conventional CGH equation.

  • In general, a 3D computer graphic model is being used to generate a digital hologram as theinput information because the 3D information of an object can be extracted from a 3D model, easily. The 3D information of a real scene can be extracted by using a depth camera. The 3D information, point cloud, corresponding to real scene is extracted from a taken image pair, a gray texture and a depth map, by a depth camera. The extracted point cloud is used to generate a digital hologram as input information. The digital hologram is generated by using the coherent holographic stereogram, which is a fast digital hologram generation algorithm based on segmentation. The generated digital hologram using the taken image pair by a depth camera is reconstructed by the Fresnel approximation. By this method, the digital hologram corresponding to a real scene or a real object could be generated by using the fast digital hologram generation algorithm. Furthermore, experimental results are satisfactory.

  • This paper presents a new method to synthesize a digital hologram that meets the resolution of a currently manufactured LCD while capable of displaying a 3-D object. That is accomplished by segmenting a hologram, resulting in relaxed sampling constraint. We show that the segmentation of a hologram enables us to utilize the planewave approximation and, unlike in a holographic stereogram, it does not require projection process, but directly takes fourier transform of horizontally sliced 2-D images that constitute a 3-D object, which makes it possible to reconstruct a higher resolution image with depth information. We also show that proposed hologram contains data significantly smaller than the conventional hologram does, which is quite useful for constructing wide-viewing hologram. Finally, simulation results obtained by both methods are compared.

  • This study analyzed cases that applied hologram technology in the fashion industry in order to provide basic information for research on fashion marketing using hologram technology. The results of this study are as follows. A hologram was applied to fashion businesses in various ways including fashion shows, outdoor signboards, hologram windows or screens in stores, and launching shows or exhibitions. Most of these cases were foreign fashion brands, which utilized hologram technology actively for formulating a new brand image or for advertising products. Among Korean brands, however, there are not many cases of hologram application. Today, as-being the age of smart devices, the mobile advertisement market is growing rapidly among smart phone users. DKNY and Puma are providing information on styling through smart phone applications, and the Adidas stores in Germany also allow the customers to buy goods by entering a simple code through the smart phone. Recently, new devices are being introduced one by one, which display 2D digital contents in 3D holograms by combining mobile and hologram technologies. The marketing of fashion products is not just for supplying products but is required to satisfy the consumers' five senses. Therefore, the development of experiential contents based on the combination of mobile and hologram technologies will open new potential for profitable business models.

  • The hologram pyramid is an application of floating holograms, allowing the observer to see three-dimensional holograms from various angles without wearing wearable devices. Due to the low cost and ease of manufacturing, it has been used in a wide variety of fields as diverse as education, prototyping, showcase, and etc. But, when the observer looks at the hologram from the place where each side of the hologram pyramid is connected, the hologram looks cut and distorted. Also, the observer can see the only hologram of angles viewed head-on from each side. In this paper, we propose a method of generating a hologram image corresponding to the observer's gaze angle by tracking the observer's position and conducting reverse distortion. It provide a hologram of the angle viewed by the observer without cutting and distortion. In addition, the existing method and the proposed method were applied and compared in the hologram pyramid.

  • A real-time digital holographic display is the core technology for the next-generation 3DTV. Holographic display requires a considerably large amount of calculation. If generating a large number of digital holograms is intended, the amount of calculation and the time required increase exponentially. This is a significant obstacle in a real-time hologram service. This paper proposes an algorithm that increases the speed of generating a Fresnel hologram by using a recursive addition operation covering the entire coordinate array of a digital hologram. The 3D object designed to calculate the digital hologram uses a depth-map image produced by computer graphics. The proposed algorithm is a technique that performs the computer-generated holography (CGH) operation with only recursive addition of all of the hologram's coordinates by analyzing the regularity between the 3D object and the digital hologram coordinates. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm increases the operation speed by 70% over the technique using the conventional CGH equation and by more than 30% over the previously proposed recursive technique.

  • Hologram can be categorized into analog and digital hologram but there's a clear limitation in expensive equipment and content realization for ordinary people to realize. In addition, it's required to conduct study on hologram contents with interaction added, escaping out of exiting stable format like endlessly repetitive contents or passive view through specific video. Therefore, this article aims to suggest fusion image system, especially focusing on floating hologram among similar holograms. Eight elements of hologram interaction are as follows: height of camera in a three-dimensional space, interval between 3D model, overlapped model, scale, animation, position, color and 3D model change. For the floating hologram, the audience can control by themselves in real time, the popular, active hologram contents-making methodology is suggested by making the best use of fusion image system and making floating hologram easily without using expensive hologram equipment. The image system developed in actual exhibition and feedback should be complemented to develop better hologram image system.

  • The image projected onto the screen of the floating hologram is no more than a two-dimensional image. Although it creates an illusion that an object appears to float in space as it moves around while showing its different parts. This paper has proposed a novel method of floating 3D hologram display to view stereoscopic three-dimensional images without putting on glasses. The system is comprised of a sharkstooth scrim screen, projector, polarizing filter for the projector, and a polarizing film to block the image projected from the sham screen. As part of the polarization characteristics, the background image and the front object have completely been separated from each other with the stereoscopic 3D effect successfully implemented by the binocular disparity caused by the distance between the two screens.

  • In this paper, we presented a simple hologram recording set for learners to broaden their program choices and experience holographic techniques with lifelong education programs. In order to obtain quality 3D images, the quality of light sources and recording mediums, which are the main elements of hologram recording, must be good. In addition, due to the characteristics of the hologram, the ambient vibrations shall be minimized for accurate interference pattern recording. The simple hologram recording set presented in this paper has not significantly restricted in space and location, and anyone can easily experience it at a reasonable price compared to the existing hologram production method. Also, it can make two different type of hologram (transmission and reflection) for providing easy access to recording and reconstruction of the hologram. Experiments have shown that holographic manufacturing practices are a very useful way to educate the public on optics and photonics technologies.
