By using a coupled circuit, time-stepping, two-dimensional finite element method (2-D FEM), the performance of a stand-alone permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) with inset rotor can be computed without involving the classical two-axis model. The effects of interpolar air gap length and armature resistance on the load characteristics are investigated. It is shown that the interpolar flux density, and hence the amount of voltage compensation, is affected by magnetic saturation. Validity of the coupled circuit and field analysis is confirmed by experiments on a prototype generator. The machine exhibits an approximately level load characteristic when it is supplying an isolated unity-power-factor load.
Precise prediction and control of the strip profile is crucial for automatic process set-up and operation of a hot strip mill. In the current study, we present the effect of post-deformation on the steady-state strip profile. The process was simulated by a 3-D elastic-plastic finite element (FE) analysis. Comparisons are made between the strip profile measured at the roll exit and the steady-state strip profile. The results raised an issue with regard to the importance of taking into account the effect of post-deformation.

A hypoid gear is a type of spiral bevel gear whose axis does not intersect with the axis of the meshing gear. The size of a hypoid gear is compact and the ratio of contact is high; therefore, the noise is lower than in other types. Due to these characteristics, the hypoid gear is commonly used in manufacturing processes such as those of escalators and subway screen doors. The purpose of this paper is to develop a reducer using the hypoid gear. In order to check the stability of the proposed reducer, 3D modeling is carried out by CATIA, and a structural analysis is performed using FEM (a finite element method).

In this study, the instantaneous heat flux measurement probe and the linkage system for the measurement of the instantaneous temperature and heat flux of the DI mono cylinder diesel engine were developed, and these were proved to have a good reliability and sensibility. A 3-D FEM model which consist of full piston to accommodate the eccentric bowl in the piston head, was applied for the analysis of the thermal stress and the temperature distribution. The mean heat flux on the piston head was used as boundary condition for the analysis of piston. The analysis showed that thermal stress concentrate on the bowl and inner surface of pin hall.
Offshore wind turbines are supported by various foundations, each with its considerations in design and construction. Gravity, monopile, and suction bucket foundations encounter geotechnical issues, while jacket and tripod foundations face fatigue problems. Considering this, a gravity foundation based on a steel skirt was developed, and a monopile foundation was analyzed for Pile-Soil Interaction using the p-y curve and 3D finite element method (3D FEM). In addition, for suction bucket foundations, the effects of lateral and vertical loads were analyzed using 3D FEM and centrifuge tests. Fatigue analysis for jacket and tripod foundations was conducted using a hotspot stress approach. Some hybrid foundations and shape optimization techniques that change the shape to complement the problems of each foundation described above were assessed. Hybrid foundations could increase lateral resistance compared to existing foundations because of the combined appendages, and optimization techniques could reduce costs by maximizing the efficiency of the structure or by reducing costs and weight. This paper presents the characteristics and research directions of the foundation through various studies on the foundation. In addition, the optimal design method is presented by explaining the problems of the foundation and suggesting ways to supplement them.

In this study, 3-D FEM analysis are carried out to investigate the effect of the corners and re-entrant corners which can't be analysed by 2-D analysis. The excavation shape is re-entrant type conditions. The wall displacement, earth pressure and effectiveness of the corner struts are investigated in the re-entrant case, The 3D analysis are peformed to evaluate the effect of various factors, such as re-entrant corner size, excavation depth, and presence of struts. The wall displacement and earth pressures are influenced the size of re-entrant corner. Therefore, the effect of re-entrant corner should be considered in the evaluation of the earth pressure and displacement of the corners. Finally, strut-support systems are not effective at the re-entrant corner.
An intensive study was conducted for the crash worthy structural design of the recently developed Korean High Speed Train (KHST). Two main design concepts were set up to protect both crews and passengers from serious injury in heavy collision accidents, and to reduce damage to the train itself in light collision accidents. A collision against a movable 15-ton rigid obstacle at 110 kph was selected from train accident investigations as the accident scenario for the heavy collisions. A train-to-train collision at the relative velocity of 16 kph was used for the light collision. The crashworthiness behaviors of KHST were numerically evaluated using FEM. Analysis results using 1-D collision dynamics model of the full rake consist and 3-D shell element model of the front end structure showed good crashworthy responses in a viewpoint of structural design. Occupant analyses and sled tests demonstrated that KHST performed well enough to protect occupants under the considered accident scenarios. Finally our numerical approaches were evaluated by a real scale collision test.

Three Dimensional finite element method (FEM) was used to obtain the stress intensity factor for subsurface cracks and surface cracks existing in inhomogeneous materials. A geometry model, i.e. a solid containing one or several 3D cracks is defined. Several distributions of local node density are chosen, and then automatically superposed on one another over the geometry model. Nodes are generated by the bubble packing, and ten-noded quadratic tetrahedral solid elements are generated by the Delaunay triangulation techniques. To examine accuracy and efficiency of the present system, the stress intensity factor for a semi-elliptical surface crack in a plate subjected to uniform tension is calculated, and compared with Raju-Newman's solutions. Then the system is applied to analyze interaction effects of two dissimilar semi-elliptical cracks in a plate subjected to uniform tension.

This Paper is described basic principles of arc quenching in Molded Case Circuit Breaker. We analyzed magnetic blowout forces acting on the arc in contact system when circuit breakers interrupt fault currents in different three models by 3-D FEM(Finite Element Method). The interrupting time simulated is compared with that of short circuit tests. The results of this study derive valid of the simulation method and present the techniques to improve arc quenching performance.

Three-dimensional (3-D) electromagnetic (EM) modeling algorithm has been developed using finite element method (FEM) to acquire more efficient interpretation techniques of EM data. When FEM based on nodal elements is applied to EM problem, spurious solutions, so called 'vector parasite', are occurred due to the discontinuity of normal electric fields and may lead the completely erroneous results. Among the methods curing the spurious problem, this study adopts vector element of which basis function has the amplitude and direction. To reduce computational cost and required core memory, complex bi-conjugate gradient (CBCG) method is applied to solving complex symmetric matrix of FEM and point Jacobi method is used to accelerate convergence rate. To verify the developed 3-D EM modeling algorithm, its electric and magnetic field for a layered-earth model are compared with those of layered-earth solution. As we expected, the vector based FEM developed in this study does not cause ny vector parasite problem, while conventional nodal based FEM causes lots of errors due to the discontinuity of field variables. For testing the applicability to high frequencies 100 MHz is used as an operating frequency for the layer structure. Modeled fields calculated from developed code are also well matched with the layered-earth ones for a model with dielectric anomaly as well as conductive anomaly. In a vertical electric dipole source case, however, the discontinuity of field variables causes the conventional nodal based FEM to include a lot of errors due to the vector parasite. Even for the case, the vector based FEM gave almost the same results as the layered-earth solution. The magnetic fields induced by a dielectric anomaly at high frequencies show unique behaviors different from those by a conductive anomaly. Since our 3-D EM modeling code can reflect the effect from a dielectric anomaly as well as a conductive anomaly, it may be a groundwork not only to apply high frequency EM method to the field survey but also to analyze the fold data obtained by high frequency EM method.
