Abstract. Image segmentation is always a challenging task in computer vision as well as in pattern recognition. Nowadays, this method has great importance in the field of stereo vision. The disparity information extracting from the binocular image pairs has essential relevance in the fields like Stereoscopic (3D) Imaging Systems, Virtual Reality and 3D Graphics. The term 'disparity' represents the horizontal shift between left camera image and right camera image. Till now, many methods are proposed to visualize or estimate the disparity. In this paper, we present a new technique to visualize the horizontal disparity between two stereo images based on image segmentation method. The process of comparing left camera image with right camera image is popularly known as 'Stereo-Matching'. This method is used in the field of stereo vision for many years and it has large contribution in generating depth and disparity maps. Correlation based stereo-matching are used most of the times to visualize the disparity. Although, for few stereo image pairs it is easy to estimate the horizontal disparity but in case of some other stereo images it becomes quite difficult to distinguish the disparity. Therefore, in order to visualize the horizontal disparity between any stereo image pairs in more robust way, a novel stereo-matching algorithm is proposed which is named as "Quadtree Segmentation of Pixels Disparity Estimation (QSPDE)".

In this paper, we present an effective visual odometry estimation system to track the real-time pose of a camera moving in 3D space. In order to meet the real-time requirement as well as to make full use of rich information from color and depth images, our system adopts a feature-based sparse odometry estimation method. After matching features extracted from across image frames, it repeats both the additional inlier set refinement and the motion refinement to get more accurate estimate of camera odometry. Moreover, even when the remaining inlier set is not sufficient, our system computes the final odometry estimate in proportion to the size of the inlier set, which improves the tracking success rate greatly. Through experiments with TUM benchmark datasets and implementation of the 3D scene reconstruction application, we confirmed the high performance of the proposed visual odometry estimation method.
To enhance the effect of science educational contents, we developed a motion based training content: 3D space exploration. In this content, we used the 3D depth camera for user's motion recognition. Learners have to conduct the space station maintenance mission using the motion based natural and intuitive interface. The result this study is expected to propose the immersive training simulation for young science learners.

This paper describes a visual tracking control law of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) for monitoring of structures and maintenance of bridges. It presents a control law based on computer vision for quasi-stationary flights above a planar target. The first part of the UAV's mission is the navigation from an initial position to a final position to define a desired trajectory in an unknown 3D environment. The proposed method uses the homography matrix computed from the visual information and derives, using backstepping techniques, an adaptive nonlinear tracking control law allowing the effective tracking and depth estimation. The depth represents the desired distance separating the camera from the target.

In this paper, we present a new smoothing algorithm for variable depth mapping for real time stereoscopic image for 3D display. Proposed algorithm is based on the physical concept, called Laplacian equation and we also discuss the mapping of the depth from scene to displayed image. The approach to solve the problem in stereoscopic image which we adopt in this paper is similar to multi-region algorithm which was proposed by N.Holliman. The main difference thing in our algorithm compared with the N.Holliman's multi-region algorithm is that we use the Laplacian equation by considering the distance between viewer and object. We implement the real time stereoscopic image generation method for OpenGL on the circular polarized LCD screen to demonstrate its real functioning in the visual sensory system in human brain. Even though we make and use artificial objects by using OpenGL to simulate the proposed algorithm we assure that this technology may be applied to stereoscopic camera system not only for personal computer system but also for public broad cast system.
A 3D stereoscopic image is generated by interdigitating every scene with video editing tools that are rendered by two cameras' views in 3D modeling tools, like Autodesk MAX(R) and Autodesk MAYA(R). However, the depth of object from a static scene and the continuous stereo effect in the view of transformation, are not represented in a natural method. This is because after choosing the settings of arbitrary angle of convergence and the distance between the modeling and those two cameras, the user needs to render the view from both cameras. So, the user needs a process of controlling the camera's interval and rendering repetitively, which takes too much time. Therefore, in this paper, we will propose the 3D stereoscopic image editing system for solving such problems as well as exposing the system's inherent limitations. We can generate the view of two cameras and can confirm the stereo effect in real-time on 3D modeling tools. Then, we can intuitively determine immersion of 3D stereoscopic image in real-time, by using the 3D stereoscopic image preview function.

This study was conducted to estimate the dimensions of horticultural products and the mean plant height of plug seedlings using three-dimensional (3D) images. Two types of camera, a ToF camera and a stereo-vision camera, were used to acquire 3D images for horticultural products and plug seedlings. The errors calculated from the ToF images for dimensions of horticultural products and mean height of plug seedlings were lower than those predicted from stereo-vision images. A new indicator was defined for determining the mean plant height of plug seedlings. Except for watermelon with tap, the errors of circumference and height of horticultural products were 0.0-3.0% and 0.0-4.7%, respectively. Also, the error of mean plant height for plug seedlings was 0.0-5.5%. The results revealed that 3D images can be utilized to estimate accurately the dimensions of horticultural products and the plant height of plug seedlings. Moreover, our method is potentially applicable for segmenting objects and for removing outliers from the point cloud data based on the 3D images of horticultural crops.

This paper introduces an effective method for generating 3D stereoscopic images that gives immersive 3D experiences to viewers using mobile-based binocular HMDs. Most of previous AR systems with monocular cameras have a common limitation that the same real-world images are provided to the viewer's eyes without parallax. In this paper, based on the assumption that viewers focus on the marker in the scenario of marker based AR, we recovery the binocular disparity about a camera image and a virtual object using the pose information of the marker. The basic idea is to generate the binocular disparity for real-world images and a virtual object, where the images are placed on the 2D plane in 3D defined by the pose information of the marker. For non-marker areas in the images, we apply blur effects to reduce the visual discomfort by decreasing their sharpness. Our user studies show that the proposed method for 3D stereoscopic image provides high depth feeling to viewers compared to the previous binocular AR systems. The results show that our system provides high depth feelings, high sense of reality, and visual comfort, compared to the previous binocular AR systems.
Body weight of livestock is a crucial indicator for assessing feed requirements and nutritional status. This study was performed to estimate the body weight of Korean cattle (Hanwoo) using body volume determined from three-dimensional (3-D) image. A TOF camera with a resolution of 640×480 pixels, a frame rate of 44 fps and a field of view of 47°(H)×37°(V) was used to capture the 3-D images for Hanwoo. A grid image of the body was obtained through preprocessing such as separating the body from background and removing outliers from the obtained 3-D image. The body volume was determined by numerical integration using depth information to individual grid. The coefficient of determination for a linear regression model of body weight and body volume for calibration dataset was 0.8725. On the other hand, the coefficient of determination was 0.9083 in a multiple regression model for estimating body weight, in which the age of Hanwoo was added to the body volume as an explanatory variable. Mean absolute percentage error and root mean square error in the multiple regression model to estimate the body weight for validation dataset were 8.2% and 24.5kg, respectively. The performance of the regression model for weight estimation was improved and the effort required for estimating body weight could be reduced as the body volume of Hanwoo was used. From these results obtained, it was concluded that the body volume determined from 3-D of Hanwoo could be used as an effective variable for estimating body weight.
