  • Most of 3D indoor spatial data recently constructed by many projects merely focus on the visualization rather than geospatial information applications. The 3D indoor data for visualization in 3DS or COLLADA format are based on triangular mesh representation. In order to implement meaningful applications, we need however more meaningful information in 3D indoor spatial data than visualization data in triangular meshes. For this reason, an OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) standard, called IndoorGML(Indoor Geographic Markup Language) was published to meet the requirements on 3D indoor spatial data for several geospatial applications for indoor space more than simple visualization. It means that it becomes a critical functional requirement to convert triangular mesh representation in 3DS or COLLADA to IndoorGML. In this paper we propose a framework of the conversion, which consists of geometric, topological, and semantic construction of data from triangular meshes. An experiment carried out to validate the proposed framework is also presented in the paper.

  • In order to reconstruct a full 3D human model in reverse engineering (RE), a 3D scanner needs to be placed arbitrarily around the target model to capture all part of the scanned surface. Then, acquired multiple scans must be registered and merged since each scanned data set taken from different position is just given in its own local co-ordinate system. The goal of the registration is to create a single model by aligning all individual scans. It usually consists of two sub-steps: rough and fine registration. The fine registration process can only be performed after an initial position is approximated through the rough registration. Hence an automated rough registration process is crucial to realize a completely automatic RE system. In this paper an automated rough registration method for aligning multiple scans of complex human face is presented. The proposed method automatically aligns the meshes of different scans with the information of features that are extracted from the estimated principal curvatures of triangular meshes of the human face. Then the roughly aligned scanned data sets are further precisely enhanced with a fine registration step with the recently popular Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm. Some typical examples are presented and discussed to validate the proposed system.

  • This paper proposes an efficient method for 3D modeling of a human face from trinocular images by reconstructing face surface using range data. By using a trinocular camera system, we mitigated the tradeoff between the occlusion problem and the range resolution limitation which is the critical limitation in binocular camera system. We also propose an MPC_MBS (Matching Pixel Count Multiple Baseline Stereo) area-based matching method to reduce boundary overreach phenomenon and to improve both of accuracy and precision in matching. In this method, the computing time can be reduced significantly by removing the redundancies. In the model generation sub-pixel accurate surface data are achieved by 2D interpolation of disparity values, and are sampled to make regular triangular meshes. The data size of the triangular mesh model can be controlled by merging the vertices that lie on the same plane within user defined error threshold.

  • A factorization-based 3D reconstruction system is realized to recover 3D scene from an image sequence. The image sequence is captured from uncalibrated perspective camera from several views. Many matched feature points over all images are obtained by feature tracking method. Then, these data are supplied to the 3D reconstruction module to obtain the projective reconstruction. Projective reconstruction is converted to Euclidean reconstruction by enforcing several metric constraints. After many triangular meshes are obtained, realistic reconstruction of 3D models are finished by texture mapping. The developed system is implemented in C++, and Qt library is used to implement the system user interface. OpenGL graphics library is used to realize the texture mapping routine and the model visualization program. Experimental results using synthetic and real image data are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed system.
