Enhancement of wear resistance of components used in fast reactors is necessary for long service life of the components. Plasma nitriding is a promising surface modification technology to impart high hardness and improved wear resistance of various steel components. This study discusses the characterization of chrome nitrided SS316L casing ring used in secondary sodium pump of fast breeder reactor and its stability under long term sodium exposure. Microstructural and hardness analysis showed that stress relieved component could be chrome nitrided successfully to a thickness of about 100 ㎛. Assessment of in-sodium performance of the chrome nitrided casing ring subjected to long term exposure up to 5000h at 550℃, showed retention of chrome nitrided layer with a case depth almost similar to that before sodium exposure. A slight decrease in the hardness was observed due to prolonged high temperature sodium exposure. Tribological studies indicate very low coefficient of friction indicating the retention of good wear resistance of the coating even after long term sodium exposure.
We investigated how hydroxyapatite (HA) coating onto a porous super stainless steel (S.S.S, 22Cr-20Ni-6Mo-0.25N) affects bone ingrowth in a dog transcortical femoral model. Implants were histologically evaluated after 4 and 48 weeks of implantation, and the bone bonding strength at the bone/implant interface was examined by employing the pull-out test. The direct osseous tissue bonding onto the HA-coated S.S.S was observed, but the uncoated stainless steels had thin fibrous tissue layers. The mean interface strength of the HA-coated S.S.S was 1.5 and 2.5 times greater than those of the S.S.S and the 316L SS after one year of implantation, respectively. In preliminary studies, no toxic responce was observed from a cytotoxicity test of the S.S.S, having similar corrosion resistance to titanium. Our results suggest that early osteoconductive nature of HA coating may induce long term osteointegration for a bioinert substrate.

Automotive materials and plant modules need to be prepared for freezing parts to operate in extreme areas such as Eastern Europe, Russia, and Canada. However, the only thing that has been done for ultra-qualifying materials for extremely low operating materials is that only the effects at low temperatures are conducted at room temperature, and the effects at low temperatures are only identified at low speeds. Therefore, this study examined the low-temperature characteristics of materials by conducting comparative tests on the mechanical properties of the room at the temperature and temperature of TP304 and TP316 materials, which are the most common materials.

The heat resistant material, in service, may experience static loading, cyclic loading, or a combination of two. An experimental study of crack growth behavior of STS 316L austenitic stainless steel under fatigue, and creep-fatigue loading conditions were carried out on compact tension specimens at various tensile hold times. In the crack growth experiments under hold times. In the crack growth experiments under hold time loading conditions, tensile hold times were ranged from 5 seconds to 100 seconds and its behavior was characterized using the $\Delta$K parameter. The crack growth rates generally increase with increasing hold times. However in this material, the trend of crack growth rates decreases with increasing hold times for short hold time range relatively. It is attributed to a decline in the cyclic crack growth rate as a result of blunting at the crack tip by creep deformation. The effect of grain size on the creep behavior of STS 316L was investigated. Specimens with grain size of 30, 65 and 125${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were prepared through various heat treatments and they were tested under various test conditions. The fracture mode of 316L changed from transgranular to intergranular with increasing grain size.

In this study, STS316L produced by a double-melting process involving vacuum induction melting (VIM) and vacuum arc remelting (VAR) was subjected to extrusion and drawing to form a tube and was subsequently electrolytic polished (EP). The grain size of the obtained STS316L without EP was approximately 55 ㎛, with no difference found after EP. The thickness of the EP layer was measured by AES and TEM, showing values of approximately 10 nm and 15 nm, respectively. After EP, the Cr/Fe and CrO/FeO ratios of the passive layer increased from 1.48 to 1.62 and from 2.15 to 2.26, respectively, while the surface roughness decreased significantly from 0.255 to 0.024 ㎛. Consequently, the corrosion rate decreased in both NaCl and HCl solutions after the EP process. Additionally, the amounts of eluted Cr and Fe ions were reduced from 1.2 to 0.8 ppb and 10.3 to 0.8 ppb, respectively. Furthermore, polarization tests revealed that STS316L treated with EP required a lower current density to reach a passive state, indicating that corrosion behavior was retarded.
Titanium and its alloys are finding increasing use in medical devices and dental implants. The strong selling point of titanium is its resistance to the highly corrosive body fluids in which an implant must survive. This corrosion resistance is due to a tenacious passive oxide or film which exists on the metal's surface and renders it passive. Potentiodynamic polarization measurement is one of the most commonly used electro-chemical methods that have been applied to measure corrosion rates. And the potentiodynamic polarization test supplies detailed information such as open circuit, rupture, and passivation potential. Furthermore, it indicates the passive range and sensitivity to pitting corrosion. This study was designed to compare the corrosion resistance of the commonly used dental implant materials such as CP Ti, Ti-6A1-4V, Co-Cr-Mo alloy, and 316L stainless steel. And the effects of galvanic couples between titanium and the dental alloys were assessed for their useful-ness-as. materials for superstructure. The working electrode is the specimen , the reference electrode is a saturated calomel electrode (SCE), and the counter electrode is made of carbon. In $N_2-saturated$ 0.9% NaCl solutions, the potential scanning was performed starting from -800mV (SCE) and the scan rate was 1 mV/sec. At least three different polarization measurements were carried out for each material on separate specimen. The galvanic corrosion measurements were conducted in the zero-shunt ammeter with an implant supraconstruction surface ratio of 1:1. The contact current density was recorded over a 24-hour period. The results were as follows : 1. In potential-time curve, all specimens became increasingly more noble after immersion in the test solution and reached between -70mV and 50mV (SCE) respectively after 12 hours. 2. The Ti and Ti alloy in the saline solution were most resistant to corrosion. They showed the typical passive behavior which was exhibited over the entire experimental range. Therefore no breakdown potentials were observed. 3. Comparing the rupture potentials, Ti and Ti alloy had the high(:st value (because their break-down potentials were not observed in this study potential range ) followed by Co-Cr-Mo alloy and stainless steel (316L). So , the corrosion resistance of titanium was cecellent, Co-Cr-Mo alloy slightly inferior and stainless steel (316L) much less. 4. The contact current density sinks faster than any other galvanic couple in the case of Ti/gold alloy. 5. Ag-Pd alloy coupled with Ti yielded high current density in the early stage. Furthermore, Ti became anodic. 6. Ti/Ni-Cr alloy showed a relatively high galvanic current and a tendency to increase.
In several locations of the pressurized water reactors, dissimilar metal welds using inconel welding wires are used to join the low alloy steel nozzles to stainless steel pipes. To evaluate the integrity and design the dissimilar welds, tensile and fracture properties variations are needed. In this study, dissimilar metal welds composed of SA508 Gr.3 LAS, inconel 82/182 weld, and TP316 stainless steel were prepared by gas tungsten arc welding and shielded metal arc welding technique. Microstructures were observed using optical and electron microscopes. Different tensile and fracture properties were observed depending on the specimen sampling position at room temperature and $320^{\circ}C,$ and that was discussed based on the microstructure characteristics. It was found that the strength at the bottom of weld was greater than at the top of the weld. Also, from the test data using small punch specimen, more detailed tensile property variations were evaluated.

Based on a composition of 99.4 wt% AISI 316L stainless steel, 0.3wt% Ti and 0.3 wt% $Y_2O_3$, an austenitic ODS steel was fabricated by a process of mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing and rolling. Fine oxide particles were observed in the matrix, and their chemical formulations were determined to be $Y_2Si_2O_7$ and TiO. Heat treatment of the cold-rolled sample at $1200^{\circ}C$ induced an isotropic tensile behavior at room temperature and at $700^{\circ}C$. This result would be mainly attributed to the equiaxed grains that form as a result of the heat treatment for recrystallization.

Fully reversed push-pull low cycle fatigue tests under strain control of trapezoid cyclic mode have been conducted in air at temperature of 550.deg. C and with frequency of 0.5 cpm on the domestic stainless steel STS 316 after solution treatment for 1 hour at 1100.deg. C. As an experimental equipment for high temperature fatigue tests, an electric servo-hydraulic fatigue machine(Instron model 1350) was used. This paper presents the effects of creep hold time and plastic strain range on push-pull high temperature low cycle fatigue life and fracture behavior. The fracture surfaces were observed by means of the scanning electron microscope. The results are as follows. (1) The fatigue life decreases with increase of the plastic strain range equal hold time and also decreases as the hold time is getting longer. (2) The frequency modified damage function can predict fatigue life by incorporating a variation of Coffin's frequency modified approach into damage function. (3) The ratios of creep damage and fatigue damage can be calculated by using he linear accumulation damage concept and the ratio of creep damage increases as the hold time is getting longer. (4) At the creep hold time of 5 minutes and the strain range of 2.0%, the fracture mode was intergranular fracture and striations were hardly observed. In this case, the intergranular cracking was originated in void type('.gamma.' type) cracking.

In this study, the mechanical properties of 80% cold-rolled austenitic 316L stainless steel were evaluated using specimens subjected to reverse transformation at 500-750℃ for 20 minutes and reverse transformation at 700℃ for 2-60 minutes. Also, for the elastic wave obtained from the tensile test, the dominant frequency according to the reverse transformation condition was investigated by time-frequency analysis. The SEM image of the 80% cold-rolled material was transformed into martensite and showed line and cross shapes. The TEM image showed that line shapes were shown at the grain, and grain boundary of martensite. The higher the heat treatment temperature and the longer time, the larger the grain. Tensile strength decreased as the heat treatment temperature and time increased, but elongation increased. Hardness was proportional to tensile strength. This is because the grain with different directions showed the same direction due to reverse transformation. The dominant frequency was decreased and then increased as the temperature and time increased. This is because the direction of the grain is different at a low temperature and the same direction is shown at a high temperature.
