  • Turbulent jet in a crossflow, issuing from a row of holes on a convex surface of 90 .deg. bend duct, is predicted by a 3-dimensional numerical method. The Cartesian coordinate system in adopted in upstream and downstream tangents and the cylindrical polar coordinate system in curved region. The Reynolds stresses and heat fluxes are obtained from a standard k-e model in the core region and van Driest model in the vicinity of the wall. The governing equations are discretized by a finite volume method and solutions are obtained by a locally elliptic calculation procedure. Pressure and convective terms are treated by SIMPLE algorithm and hybrid scheme respectively. A vortex initially induced by the injected jet has been built up due to the interaction with the secondary flow caused by pressure gradient and centrifugal force. The vortex structure has a strong influence on the wall cooling effectiveness. Another vortex like horseshoe is formed in the vicinity of the injection hole and its strength is getting weak as it moves downward.

  • This paper proposed an efficient manufacturing system using the OMM (on-machine measurement) system. The OMM system is software-based 3D modeler for inspection on machine, and it is interfaced with machine tools via RS232C. The software is composed of two inspection modules; one is touch probe operating module, and the other is laser displacement sensor operating module. The module for touch probe needs the inspection feature extracted from CAD data. The touch probe moves to workpiece by three operating modes as follows: manual, general and automatic mode. The operating module of the laser displacement sensor is used to inspect profiles and very small holes. An advantage of this inspection method is the ability to execute on-line inspection during machining or afterward. The efficiency of proposed system which can predict and define the machining errors of each process was verified, so the developed system was applied to inspect a mold-base (cavity, core).

  • In this study, the stress distribution of rectangular bar under torsion, when warping of both ends is free or constrained, is investigated. Method of separation of variable and Fourier Series are used for the theoretical analysis, and 3dimensional photoelastic stress-freezing method for experimental analysis. The main results are as follows; 1) In the case of warping-constrained rectangular bar, the normal stresses are negligible because they are less then 0.5% of the shear stresses. The maximum normal stress is placed on the point of y=0.61 b when b/a=1 and it gradually moves to the corner y=b when the value of b/a is increased. 2) According to increase of the value of b/a, on the crossection, the maximum shear stress is placed on the middle point of the long side (x=${\pm}a$, y=0) when warping of both ends is free but the middle of the short side (x=0, y=${\pm} b$) when warping is constrained. The stress distribution is straight line when warping is constrained, namely, the stress distribution is proportional to the distance from the axis of centroid, but parabolic when warping is free. 3) The values of the combined stress of warping-constrained bar, if the influence of the loaded point is neglected, are generally smaller than those of warping-free.

  • In this paper, design and fabrication of a MSP(Multiple Scattering Points) discriminator for a simulated target measurement using a HRR(High Range Resolution) RADAR are described. The MSP discriminator is designed to provide a reference signal at the installed point on the simulated target in an outdoor test. The MSP discriminator is designed to have a remote control function that can turn the MSP discriminator on and off when the target moves to a remote location. While the MSP discriminator is off, the MSP discriminator is designed to be small enough not to spoil the target's unique RCS. The MSP discriminator consists of RF components in the Ku-band. In order to prevent spreading of the signal, a cable were added to the MSP discriminator to have an appropriate feedback loop delay considering the resolution of the RADAR. The fabricated MSP discriminator provided a reference scattering point as an RCS of approximately 1 dBsm. As a result, by using the MSP discriminator, the physical scattering points of the target were clearly identified in the measured signals with the RADAR.

  • In this paper, we have performed 3-dimensional time-resolving measurement of the Ne light emitted from the cell of plasma display panel(PDP) as a function of the pressure using the scanned point detecting system. From the temporal behavior results, we could analyze the discharge behavior of panel with Ne-Xe(4%) mixing gas and 300 torr, 400 torr and 500 torr pressure. At the top view of panel, the discharge of 300 torr panel starts at the 634 ns and ends at the 722 ns. The emission duration time is about 90 ns. The discharge of 400 torr panel starts at the 682 ns and ends at the 786 ns. the emission duration time is about 100 ns. Also, the discharge of 500 torr panel starts at the 770 ns and ends at the 826 ns. the emission duration time is about 56 ns. The discharge moves from inner edge of cathode electrode to outer cathode electrode forming arc type. In the side view of 300 torr, 400 torr and 500 torr an emission shows that the light is detected up to 180${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 150${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 70${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ height of barrier rib and the emission distribution of the 300 torr is wider than 400 torr, 500 torr.

  • This study is carried out to estimate the rate of sediment transportation both to measure the amount of suspended and bedload sediment that moves on or near the river bed and passes through the cross section of a river in unit time, with suspended and bed load samplers used for the Milyang river and to determine the most satisfactory and convenient formula of some formulas for sediment discharge by comparing the measured rate with the calculated rate. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1) The interrelationship (1) between the total discharge and the total sediment discharge (2) between discharge and suspended sediment load and (3) between discharge and bed load in the Milyang river are (1) i) 4$\leq$Q$\leq$100 C.M.S. Qr=0. 00272 Q0.70 (kg/sec) ii) 150$\leq$Q$\leq$800 C.M.S. Qr=0. 4807 Q0.46 (kg/sec) (2) Qs~=0. 07576 Q1.02 (kg/sec) (3) QB=0. 00957 Q0.44 (kg/sec) 2) The rate of suspended sediment load to total sediment discharge is found to be about; 99%. The suspended load is shown to be almost wash load which consists of silt and clay. 3) The relation between the total discharge and the suspended sediment load that are measured at three medium and small rivers in Korea is Qs=0. 13831 Q0.97 (kg/sec) 4) Brown's formula is determined to be the most convenient formula for application and comparison with observed data obtained for the Milyang river.

  • Non-planar screens such as cylinder and sphere shaped screens are widely used for high-resolution immersive visualization environments. An existing method employs quadric matrix that maps an image onto a curved screen. However if the shape of the screen changes or moves, the quadric matrix will not be valid. In this paper, we assume that the screen is a quadric shape and the screen movement or change are relatively small. Then we propose to use a piecewise planar approximations for the screen to compensate for the geometric distortion on a non-planar screen. We demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method through experiments.

  • In this paper, the goal is to investigate how manipulating the camera can minimize motion sickness and maximize immersion when a user moves in a virtual environment that requires vertical movement. In general, since a user uses virtual reality in a flat space, the actual movement of the user and the virtual movement are different, resulting in sensory conflict, which has the possibility of causing virtual reality motion sickness. Therefore, we propose three powerful camera manipulation techniques, implement them, and then propose which model is most appropriate through user experiments.

  • Recently, they are interested in the relation between night's vehicle accidents of drivers and the dynamic visual acuity at home and aboard. So, in this research, we tried to design an optical system of the inspection equipment to measure the dynamic visual acuity. A optotype standard did to Landolt's ring with 45mm of diameter and 9mm of gap to maintain the visual acuity of 1.0 in the 30m distance. An optical structure of the inspection equipment was composed of the sequence of an observer, a plus refraction lens system, a minus refraction lens system, and an optotype that was arranged to have characteristics that the size of the first virtual image of the optotype made by the minus refraction lens system grows bigger gradually according to the optotype movement to near distance from far distance, and also the first virtual image moves to the principle plane from the focal point of the plus refraction lens system as the size of the first virtual image arranged to the inside of focal distance of plus refraction lens system grows bigger gradually. As doing these processes, we completed the optical system of which characteristic is that the position of the final second virtual image moves to 3m from 50m as the size of the second virtual image made by the plus refraction lens system maintains to be regular.

  • A statistical prediction model for the typhoon intensity and track in the Northwestern Pacific area was developed based on the artificial neural network scheme. Specifically, this model is focused on the 5-day prediction after tropical cyclone genesis, and used the CLIPPER parameters (genesis location, intensity, and date), dynamic parameters (vertical wind shear between 200 and 850hPa, upper-level divergence, and lower-level relative vorticity), and thermal parameters (upper-level equivalent potential temperature, ENSO, 200-hPa air temperature, mid-level relative humidity). Based on the characteristics of predictors, a total of seven artificial neural network models were developed. The best one was the case that combined the CLIPPER parameters and thermal parameters. This case showed higher predictability during the summer season than the winter season, and the forecast error also depended on the location: The intensity error rate increases when the genesis location moves to Southeastern area and the track error increases when it moves to Northwestern area. Comparing the predictability with the multiple linear regression model, the artificial neural network model showed better performance.
