Bismuth-antimony-telluride based thermoelectric thin film materials were prepared by metal organic vapor phase deposition using trimethylbismuth, triethylantimony and diisopropyltelluride as metal organic sources. A planar type thermoelectric device has been fabricated using p-type $Bi_{0.4}Sb_{1.6}Te_3$ and n-type $Bi_2Te_3$ thin films. Firstly, the p-type thermoelectric element was patterned after growth of $4{\mu}m$ thickness of $Bi_{0.4}Sb_{1.6}Te_3$ layer. Again n-type $Bi_2Te_3$ film was grown onto the patterned p-type thermoelectric film and n-type strips are formed by using selective chemical etchant for $Bi_2Te_3$. The top electrical connector was formed by thermally deposited metal film. The generator consists of 20 pairs of p- and n-type legs. We demonstrate complex structures of different conduction types of thermoelectric element on same substrate by two separate runs of MOCVD with etch-stop layer and selective etchant for n-type thermoelectric material. Device performance was evaluated on a number of thermoelectric devices. To demonstrate power generation, one side of the device was heated by heating block and the voltage output was measured. The highest estimated power of 1.3mW is obtained at the temperature difference of 45K. We provide a promising approach for fabricating thin film thermoelectric generators by using MOCVD grown thermoelectric materials which can employ nanostructures for high thermoelectric properties.
In this work, all solid-state thin film supercapacitor(TFSC) was fabricated using tungsten trioxide (WO$_3$) with a structure WO$_3$/LiPON/WO$_3$/Pt/TiO$_2$/Si (substrate). After TiO$_2$ was deposited on Si(100) wafer by d.c. reactive sputtering, the Pt current collector films were grown on TiO$_2$glue layer without breaking vacuum by d.c. sputtering. Fabrication conditions of WO$_3$ thin film were such that substrate temperature, working pressure, gas ratio of $O_2$/Ar and r.f. power were room temperature, 5 mTorr, 20% (O$_2$(8sccm)/Ar(32sccm)) and 200W, respectively. LiPON electrolyte film were grown on the WO$_3$ film using r.f. magnetron sputtering at room temperature. The XRD pattern of the as-deposited WO$_3$ thin film were shown no crystalline peak (amorphous). The SEM image of as-deposited WO$_3$ thin film showed that the surface is smooth and uniform. The capacitiy of as-fabricated TFSC was 0$\times$10$^{-2}$ F/$\textrm{cm}^2$-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.
We investigated the effects of ZnO thin film deposition methods on the performance of inverted polymer solar cells with a structure of ITO/ZnO/P3HT:PCBM/MoO3/Al. The ZnO thin films were deposited by various methods (spin coating of nanoparticles, sol-gel process, atomic layer deposition) and their morphology was analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The device with ZnO nanoparticle thin films showed the highest power conversion efficiency of 3 % with low series resistance and high shunt resistance. The superior performance of the device with the ZnO nanoparticle layer is attributed to better electron extraction capability.
Most of heteroepitaxial $\beta$-SiC thin films have been successfully grown on Si(100) adapting a carburizing process, by which a few atomic layers of substrate surface is chemically converted to very thin SiC layer using hydrocarbon gas sources. Using an organo-silicon precursor, bis-trimethylsilymethane (BTMSM, [$C_7H_{20}Si_2$]), heteropitaxial $\beta$-SiC thin films were successfully grown directy on Si substrate without a carburized buffer layer. The defect density of the $\beta$-SiC thin films deposited without a carburized layer was as low as that of $\beta$-SiC films deposited on carburized buffer layer. In addition, void density was also reduced by the formation of self-buffer layer using BTMSM instead of carburized buffer layer. It seems to be mainly due to the characteristic bonding structure of BTMSM, in which Si-C was bonded alternately and tetrahedrally (SiC$_4$).

Continued miniaturization and increasingly exact requirements for thin film deposition in the semiconductor industry is driving the search for new effective, efficient, selective precursors and processes. The requirements of defect-free, conformal films, and precise thickness control have focused attention on atomic layer deposition (ALD). ALD precursors so far have been developed through a trial-and-error experimental approach, leveraging the expertise and tribal knowledge of individual research groups. Precursors can show significant variation in performance, depending on specific choice of co-reactant, deposition stage, and processing conditions. The chemical design space for reactive thin film precursors is enormous and there is urgent need for the development of computational approaches to help identify new ligand-metal architectures and functional co-reactants that deliver the required surface activity for next-generation thin-film deposition processes. In this paper we discuss quantum mechanical simulation (e.g. density functional theory, DFT) applied to ALD precursor reactivity and state-of-the-art automated screening approaches to assist experimental efforts leading toward optimized precursors for next-generation ALD processes.
Thin CrAlMgSiN films, whose composition were 30.6Cr-11.1Al-7.3Mg-1.2Si-49.8N (at.%), were deposited on steel substrates in a cathodic arc plasma deposition system. They consisted of alternating crystalline Cr-N and AlMgSiN nanolayers. After oxidation at $800^{\circ}C$ for 200 h in air, a thin oxide layer formed by outward diffusion of Cr, Mg, Al, Fe, and N, and inward diffusion of O ions. Silicon ions were relatively immobile at $800^{\circ}C$. After oxidation at $900^{\circ}C$ for 10 h in air, a thin $Cr_2O_3$ layer containing dissolved ions of Al, Mg, Si, and Fe formed. Silicon ions became mobile at $900^{\circ}C$. After oxidation at $900^{\circ}C$ for 50 h in air, a thin $SiO_2-rich$ layer formed underneath the thin $Cr_2O_3$ layer. The film displayed good oxidation resistance. The main factor that decreased the oxidation resistance of the film was the outward diffusion and subsequent oxidation of Fe at the sample surface, particularly along the coated sample edge.
We proposed a novel method to evaluate the magnetic properties of the initial layer and the columnar structure separately for CoCr-based perpendicular recording media. We show that the thickness of the initial layer and the intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy of columnar structure can be quantitatively evaluated using the plotted product of perpendicular anisotropy to magnetic film thickness versus magnetic film thickness ($K_{u{\bot}}^{ex{p.}}$$\times$ d$_{mag.}$ vs. d$_{mag.}$ plot). Based on the analyses, it is found that: (1) compared with CoCrPtTa media, CoCrPtB media have relatively thin initial layer, and have fine grains with homogeneous columnar structure with c-plane crystallographic orientation; (2) CoCrPtB media can be grown epitaxially on Ru or CoCr/C intermediate layer, and as the result, the magnetic properties of the media within thin thickness region of d$_{mag.}$$\leq$ 20 nm is significantly improved; (3) the key issue of material investigation for CoCr-based perpendicular recording media will be focused on how to fabricate c-plane-oriented columnar grains well isolated with nonmagnetic substance in epitaxial-growth media, while maintaining the thermal stability of the media.
For a high efficient field emission display (FED), the specific vacuum conditions below 10-7 Torr should be required. However, because the FED has the geometrical restriction due to its micro size, the thin film getters can be proposed for chemical pumping as a way to reduce impurity gases in the panel. The thin film getters, developed by employing the coating of new materials such as NI or Pt on getter surface, can be used without any activation process and show the enhanced sorption characteristics. Especially, using the Zr (1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) thin film getters with the Pt surface layer, the significant gettering for various active gases could be achieved from 9$\times$10-5 Torr to 1$\times$10-6 Torr or below. this good sorption properties is mainly contributed to the surface coating layer which shows the catalytic effect for gas dissociation and protects the getter materials against oxidation.
Pb0.5,Sr0.5TiO3(PST) thin films were deposited on Si with MgO (100) buffer layer by the alkoxide-based sol-gel method. Structural and dielectric properties of PST thin films for the tunable microwave device applications were investigated. For the MgO/Si buffer layer, the PST thin films exhibited highly (100) orientation. The MgO buffer layer affects the stress state of the (100)-oriented PST thin films. The dielectric constant, tunability, and FOM of the highly (100)-oriented PST thin film increased with increasing annealing temperature due to the decrease in lattice distortion. The differences in dielectric properties may be attributed to the change in the film stress. The dielectric constants, dielectric loss and tunability of the PST thin films deposited on the MgO/Si substrates measured at 10 kHz were 822, 0.025, and 80.1%, respectively.
