  • A lot of researches have been performed on the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) which produces ultra-fine grains. Along with the experiments, the finite element method has been widely employed to investigate the deformation behavior of specimen during ECAP and the effects of process parameters of ECAP. In this paper, pure-Zirconium is considered for ECAP process by using three-dimensional finite element analysis. The results have been compared with those of previous two-dimensional analysis and with the experimental results

  • In order to design a diesel engine system and predict its performance, it is necessary to analyze the gas flow of the intake and exhaust system. A gas flow analysis in three-dimensional (3D) format needs a high-resolution workstation and enormous time for analysis. Therefore, the method of characteristics (MOC) was used for a gas flow analysis with a fast calculation time and a low-resolution workstation. An experiment was conducted on a single cylinder diesel engine to measure pressure in cylinder, intake pipe and exhaust pipe. The one-dimensional (1D) gas flow was analyzed under the same conditions as the experiment. The engine speed, valve timing and compression ratio were the same conditions and the intake pressure was inputted as the experimental results. Bent pipe such as an exhaust port that cannot be realized in 1D was omitted. As results of validation, the cylinder pressure showed accuracy, but the exhaust pipe pressure exhibited inaccuracy. This is considered as an error caused by the failure to implement a bent pipe such as an exhaust port. When analyzed in 3D, calculation time required 61 hours more based on a model of this study. In the future, we intend to implement a bent pipe that cannot be realized in 1D using 3D and prepare a method to supplement reliability by using 1D-3D coupling.

  • This study compares the revised method in loose saturated sandy ground where the LNG storage tank will be installed with an evaluation method by one-dimensional effective stress analysis using the UBC3D-PLM model. Various laboratory and field tests were conducted to establish the parameters necessary for evaluation. The revised liquefaction evaluation method using the seismic response analysis result and N value from standard penetration testing evaluated the possibility of liquefaction as high, but assessment using effective stress analysis, which can consider various liquefaction resistance factors, found the site to be somewhat stable against liquefaction. One-dimensional finite element analysis using UBC3D-PLM modeling facilitated easier assessment of stability against liquefaction than the other methods and minimized the area required for reinforcement against liquefaction. In addition, it is expected that two-and three-dimensional numerical analysis considering the foundation of the LNG storage tank can identify the seismic design and behavior when liquefaction occurs.

  • When analyzing field or optimizing the shape of electrode in three dimensional space by using the surface charge method, we need to divide finely the surface of electrode into surface element like triangle or rectangle. In this case, there exist any variables in field analysis or field optimization. In particular, smoothness on the surface of optimized shape is not good. Recently, A paper is published where introducing NURB curve to field analysis and field optimization about two dimensional space model and axial symmetric three dimensional space model results in reduced variables, enhenced accuracy and improved smoothness. NURB curve has some useful properties like continuity, controllability and locality. Therefore in this paper, in order to improve the demerits of the established optimization method for three dimensional space models, the NURB surface that has same properties in common with NURB curve is used to analyze and optimize simple model.

  • The measurement of residual stress distribution of $Si_3N_4/SUS304$ joint was performed on 23 specimens with the same joint condition using PSPC type X-ray stress measurement system and the two-dimensional elastoplastic analysis using finite element method was also attempted. As results, residual stress distribution near the interface on the ceramic side of the joint was revealed quantitatively. Residual stress on the ceramic side of the joint was turned out to be tensional near the interface, maximum along the edge, varying in accordance with the condition of the joint and variance to be most conspicuous for the residual stress normal to the interface characterized by the stress singularities. In the vicinity of the interface, the high stress concentration occurs and residual stress distributes three-dimensionally. Therefore, the measured stress distribution differed remarkably from the result of the two-dimensional finite-element analysis. Especially at the center of the specimen near the interface, the residual stress, $\sigma_{x}$ obtained from the finite element analysis was compressive, whereas measurement using X-ray yielded tensile $\sigma_{x}$. Here we discuss two dimensional superposition model the discrepancy between the results from the two dimensional finite element analysis and X-ray measurement.

  • Fin effectiveness and efficiency of a thermally asymmetric rectangular fin are represented as a function of non-dimensional fin length, width, fip tip surface Biot number and the ratio of fin bottom surface Biot number to top surface Biot number. For this analysis, three dimensional separation of variables method is used. One of the results shows that fin effectiveness can be increased or decreased depending on the fin length as the fin tip surface Biot number increases while fin efficiency decreases without depending on that as the fin tip surface Biot number increases.

  • Research has importance in proposing the design of a tunnel with a vertical vent to secure passengers in a comfortable environment and safe against pressure. Using several analysis methods, the magnitude of the pressure induced by the vertical vent in the tunnel can be analyzed. In addition to the 3-dimensional method, the 2-dimensional method and the 2-dimensional axis-symmetric method are also used to analyze the strong and weak points of each so that the optimum analysis method can be obtained. As a result, it appears that the 2-dimensional axis-symmetric method is the most suitable in analyzing tunnel pressure consider to accuracy and time effective aspect. Also, the 3-dimensional method is disadvantageous in that it takes longer in calculating results, but is more effective in predicting phenomena around the vertical vent in the tunnel.

  • In magnetic levitation and repulsion systems, the eddy current on the rail induced by the motion of vehicle, plays an important role on forces. The 3-dimensional finite element method is used to analyze these phenomina. The non-linear analysis is also carried out using Newton-Raphson method. The levitation, drag, and guidance forces are compared with those obtained by two-dimensional linear analysis and three-dimensional linear analysis.

  • Usability has become a primary factor in determining the acceptability and consequent success of consumer product. It is common that the product usability is evaluated by objective performance measures and/or subjective user preference measures. This study is concerned with objective evaluation of the product usability using 3-dimensional motion analysis. We evaluated car-audio position using 3-dimensional motion analysis. The parameters investigated in this experiment were height of car-audio, left-right angle, and front-end angle. The experimental results showed that the usability evaluation method using motion analysis was consistent with user's subjective assessment. This objective method can be applied to not only car-audio position evaluation but also various consumer products'usability evaluation.
