The oxygen barrier films were formed on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrate by a sol-gel process using 3-aminoproprytrimethoxysilane (APTMOS). The effects of solvent type, coating times and incorporation of fumed silica on oxygen permeability coefficient were investigated. The APTMOS coating film prepared from methanol as a solvent exhibited higher oxygen barrier properties than that using THF. The oxygen permeability coefficient of coated film with APTMOS/methanol by coating 7 times was measured to be $2.28{\times}10^{-6}$, while that of PET film was $1.16{\times}10^{-4}$ GPU. The addition of fumed silica does not affect the oxygen barrier properties. It may be explained that silica particles disrupt chain packing, which leads to an increase in free volume for permeation.
Hydrophilic coating solutions were prepared by reacting a silane coupling agent, aminosilane with colloidal silica (15~20 nm in diameter). Hydrophilic coating films were also obtained by depositing the hydrophilic coating solutions on polycarbonate substrates by dip-coating and subsequently by thermal curing at $120^{\circ}C$. During this process, the effect of types of aminosilane was studied on the properties of coating films. As a result, coating films, prepared with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as aminosilane, showed contact angles of $25{\sim}44^{\circ}$ and a poor pencil hardness of B. On the other hand, coating films, prepared with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) as aminosilane, exhibited contact angles of $26{\sim}37^{\circ}$ and a good pencil hardness of 2H.
Functionalized SAB-15 samples by octadecyltrimethoxysilane (OTC) were studied by 13C magic angle spinning (MAS) cross polarization (CP) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In the SBA-15 sample fully functionalized by 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APS) and OTC in 1:1 molar ratio, octadecyl chains were observed to have, on average, more trans conformation than those in the SBA-15 samples fully modified by OTC only. Our results confirm that long chain molecules tend to organize themselves better in the co-presence of short chain molecules on the surface of mesoporous materials by packing of the different length chains in an interdigitized fashion even when the short chains are long enough to have three carbons and a functional group at the ends. In addition, our results indicate that solid-state 13C CP MAS NMR spectroscopy is a simple and non-destructive method to probe the molecular structures of the domains composed of long alkyl chains.

By using a simple solution based method, gold nanonetworks which are randomly distributed gold nanowires arrays were synthesized. After APTMS (3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane) treatment, adhesion of gold nanonetworks with 10-15 nm diameters to the substrate was greatly enhanced. Density of gold nanonetworks increased with number of coating, and uniformly coated nanonetworks were connected physically and electrically. Gold nanonetworks deposited on the flexible polyimide substrate shows constant electrical conductivity for physical bending of the substrate.

In this work, we have prepared the nanocomposite by the reaction of mica and zinc oxide, and investigated the application of nanocomposite to UV protecting creams. Mica treated with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) reacted with 1,4-phenylenediisothiocyanate (PDC) to give -N=C=S functionalized surface, which was further reacted with zinc oxides coated with APTMS to give mica-zinc oxide nanocomposites. The composites were characterized by EA, EDS, TGA, SEM, zeta potential measurement, powder XRD, and DRS UV/Vis analyses. Finally, we measured transmittances of ultraviolet protection creams manufactured by using mica composite covered with zinc oxides in the range of 280~400 nm. The nanocomposites developed in this work might be applicable as inorganic hybrid materials for UV protecting creams.
[ $C_{70}$ ]-gold nanoparticle multilayer films were self-assembled using a 'dirt-ball' method on the reactive surface of glass slides functionalized with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane. The functionalized glass slides were soaked in the solution containing both unmodified $C_{70}$ and ${\omega}$-amino-functionalized gold nanoparticles. Organic reaction (amination) facilitated the assembly of multilayer $C_{70}$-gold nanoparticle films, which have grown up to several layers. Chemical stability of $C_{70}$-gold nanoparticle films was studied by monitoring the changes in absorbance after the immersion of the films in acidic solution. In addition, ultrasonic stability of these nanoparticle films was studied by exposing them to ultrasonic irradiated surrounding, which resulted in partial desorption and a little aggregation of nanoparticles on solid surfaces.
Cyclosophoraoses (Cys), cyclic ${\beta}-(1{\rightarrow}2)-D-glucans$ produced by Rhizobium meliloti 2011, were used as a novel chiral stationary phase for the enantiomeric separation. A novel Cys stationary phase, chemically immobilized onto porous silica via aminopropyltrimethoxysilane as a molecular linker, showed good separation for each racemate of bupivacain (separation factor, $\alpha$=1.3), propranolol ($\alpha$=1.3), and fenoprofen ($\alpha$=2.9), respectively, under the mobile phase of water: methanol (80:20, v/v) at a constant flow rate of 0.9 ml/min at pH7.
A burning test was conducted on the smoke and combustion gases generated from cypress wood treated with sodium silicate, 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane sol, 3-(2-aminoethylamino)propylmethyldimethoxysilane sol, and 3-(2-aminoethylamino) propyltrimethoxysilane sol. The silicone compound sol was applied to each of the cypress wood specimens three times with a brush. The smoke and combustion generation gas were analyzed using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1) and the smoke was also evaluated by applying new smoke risk assessment method. The smoke performance index (SPI) of the cypress treated with silicone compound increased 1.66 to 8.42 times and the smoke growth index (SGI) was 11.8 to 88.2%, respectively. The smoke intensity (SI) is expected to be 1.0~50.5% lower than that of the base specimens, resulting in lower smoke and fire hazards. The third maximum carbon monoxide (COpeak) concentration of the specimens treated with silicone compounds was 22.5~33.3% lower than that of the base specimens. On the other hand, it produced potentially fatal toxicity that was 1.48~1.72 times higher than the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) acceptance standard (PEL). Cypress wood itself produced a high carbon monoxide concentration, but the silicon compound played a role in reducing this level.
Experiments on the combustion characteristics of untreated wood specimens and those treated with four types of silicone compounds were carried out using a cone calorimeter according to the ISO 5660-1 standard. 3-Aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS), 3-(2-aminoethylamino) propylmethyldimethoxysilane (AEAPMDMS), and 3-(2-aminoethylamino) propyltrimethoxysilane (AEAPTMS) were used as the silane compounds. The flame retardants were synthesized with sodium silicate and amino silane compounds. The measured time to ignition after combustion at an external heat flux of $50kW/m^2$ was 9 s to 11 s. Time to ignition was marked with a delayed value in the 3 s to 5 s range. The peak heat release rate ($HRR_{peak}$) was reduced by 5 to 20% compared with the uncoated specimen, and AEAPMDMS showed the highest initial fire risk. The total heat release (THR) was decreased by 1 to 22%. Compared to the untreated specimen, the fire performance index (FPI) of the specimens coated with silicone sol compounds increased by 1.5 to 2.2 fold. The fire growth index (FGI) of the AEAPMDMS specimen was increased by 30% and the others were decreased by 93 to 94%. Therefore, the fire risk of wood coated with silicone compounds was improved in terms of the heat risk properties.
