Experiments of shock-wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction were conducted by using a supersonic wind tunnel. Nominal Mach number was varied in the range of 1.6 to 3.0 by means of different nozzles. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of boundary layer suction on normal shock-wave oscillations caused by shock wave/boundary layer interaction in a straight duct. Two-dimensional slits were installed on the top and bottom walls of the duct to bleed turbulent boundary layer flows. The bleed flows were measured by an orifice. The ratio of the bleed mass flow to main mass flow was controlled below the range of 11 per cent. Time-mean and fluctuating wall pressures were measured, and Schlieren optical observations were made to investigate time-mean flow field. Time variations in the shock wave displacement were obtained by a high-speed camera system. The results show that boundary layer suction by slits considerably reduce shock-wave oscillations. For the design Mach number of 2.3, the maximum amplitude of the oscillating shock-wave reduces by about 75% compared with the case of no slit for boundary layer suction.

Collected and analyzed the coastal processes at the estuary of Nak-Dong river and its near coastal area from the history of field measurements. Introduced a numerical model to predict three dimensional topographical change which are evaluated from the nearshore wave and the wave induced current fields for the objective area, and later it were related to the development of beach and shoals. With the comparison between measured and calculated, we found that the changes on the coastline and sand spit and bar development are induced not only by artificial forces due to the construction of river dike, but also by the strong impact of wave induced current. In future days, it is expected that coastline change and sand bar development at the lee side of Jinwoo-Deung and at the front of Dadae beach.
The aim of this study was to survey the effects of the beachface gradient on 3-D currents around the open inlets of submerged breakwaters. First, the numerical model was validated by a comparison with existing experimental data. This model is able to consider the flow through a porous medium with inertial, laminar, and turbulent resistance terms, i.e. simulate directly WAve?Structure?Seabed/Sandy beach interaction, and can determine the eddy viscosity with a LES turbulent model in a 3-Dimensional wave field (LES-WASS-3D). Using the numerical results of this model, the 3-D currents around the open inlets of submerged breakwaters were examined in relation to the beachface gradient. Moreover, the wave height distribution and mean flow around them are also discussed, as well as the distribution of the wave breaking points over the crest.

The elastic wave equation is solved using the finite-difference method in 3D space to simulate the seismic wave propagation. It is based on the velocity-stress formulation of the equation of motion on a staggered grid. The nonreflecting boundary conditions are used to attenuate the wave field close to the numerical boundary. To satisfy the stress-free conditions at the free-surface boundary, a new formulation combining the zero-stress formalism with the vacuum one is applied. The effective media parameters are employed to satisfy the traction continuity condition across the media interface. With use of the moment-tensor components, the wide range of source mechanism parameters can be specified. The numerical experiments are carried out in order to test the applicability and accuracy of this scheme and to understand the fundamental features of the wave propagation under the generalized elastic media structure. Computational results show that the scheme is sufficiently accurate for modeling wave propagation in 3D elastic media and generates all the possible phases appropriately in under the given heterogeneous velocity structure. Also the characteristics of the ground motion in an sedimentary basin such as the amplification, trapping, and focusing of the elastic wave energy are well represented. These results demonstrate the use of this simulation method will be helpful for modeling the ground motion of seismological and engineering purpose like earthquake hazard assessment, seismic design, city planning, and etc..
In this study, the nature of nonlinear field line resonances (FLR) is studied by adopting full MHD simulations. The MHD code used here is based on the total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme and we have performed numerical simulations of FLR with its three-dimensional code. If the source perturbation is strongly impulsive and thus the timescale of the initial variations is sufficiently smaller than the convection timescale, FLRs are easily confirmed in these simulations. When the disturbance is sufficiently small, it is shown that linear properties of MHD wave coupling are well reproduced. In order to examine nonlinear nature of FLR, wave spectra, Poynting flux and energy distribution are studied at resonances as the magnitude of initial disturbance gradually increases.

In this work, the electromagnetic waves scattered from 2-dimensional random rough surfaces are characterized by the $4\times4$ Mueller matrix elements. The full wave solutions are used to compute these elements. The results of the full wave solutions for 1-dimensional random rough surfaces were shown to agree well with those of the experiment and the method of moments. The Mueller matrix elements are related to the like and cross polarized radar cross sections as well as to the relative phase of the vertically and horizontally polarized waves. The $4\times4$ Mueller matrix elements completely characterize electromagnetic scattering from target. The computed results of this paper can be useful to the field of active remote sensing or RCS.

This paper presents 3D infinite elements in Cartesian coordinates for the elastodynamic problem in multi-layered half-space. Five kinds of infinite elements are developed by using approximate expressions of multiple wave components for the wave function in exterior far-field soil region. They are horizontal, horizontal-corner, vertical, vertical-corner and vertical-horizontal-corner elements. The elements can be used for the multi-wave propagating problem. Numerical example analyses are presented for rigid disk, square footings and embedded footing on homogeneous and layered half-space. The numerical results obtained show the effectiveness of the proposed infinite elements.

In this paper, the localized finite element method(LFEM) is applied to 3-dimensional ship motion problems in water of infinite depth. The LFEM used here is based on the functional constructed by Bai & Yeung(1974). To test the present numerical scheme, a few vertical axisymmetric bodies are treated by general 3-dimensional formulation. The computed results of hydrodynamic coefficients for a few vertical spheroids and vertical circular cylinders show good agreement with results obtained by others. The advantages of the present numerical method compared with the method of integral equation are as follows; (i) The cumbersome existence of irregular frequencies in the method of conventional integral equation is removed. (ii) The final matrix is banded and symmetric and the computation of the matrix elements is comparatively easier, whereas the size of the matrix in the present scheme is much larger. (iii) In the future research, it is possible to accommodate with the nonlinear exact free surface boundary condition in the localized finite element subdomain, whereas the linear solution is assumed in the truncated(far field) subdomain.
In order to study unsteady aerodynamic loads on high speed trains passing by each other at the speed of 350km/h, three-dimensional flow fields around trains during the crossing event are numerically simulated using the three-dimensional Euler equations. The Roe's FDS with MUSCL interpolation is employed to simulate wave phenomena properly. An efficient moving grid system based on domain decomposition techniques is developed to analyze the unsteady flow field induced by the restricted motion of a train on a rail. The numerical simulations of the trains passing by on the double-track are carried out to study the effect of the train nose-shape, the train length and the existence of tunnel when the crossing event occur. Unsteady aerodynamic loads side force and drag force-acting on the train during the crossing are numerically predicted and anlayzed. It is found that the strength of the side force mainly depends on the nose-shape, and that of drag force on tunnel existence. And it is observed that the push-pull like impulsive force successively acts on each car and acts in different directions between the neighborhood cars. The maximum change of the impulsive force reaches about 3 tons. These aerodynamic force data are absolutely necessary for the evaluation of the stability of the high speed multi-car train. The results also indicate the effectiveness of the present numerical method for the simulation of unsteady flow field induced by the bodies in the relative motion.

In this study, the effects of the wave field changes due to the coastal structure on the hydrodynamic performance of the OWC wave energy, converter are analyzed using a three-dimensional numerical wave tank technique (NWT). The OWC device is simulated numerically by introducing a linear pressure drop model, considering the coupling effect between the turbine and the OWC chamber in the time domain. The flow distribution around the chamber is different due to the change of reflection characteristics depending on the consideration of the breakwater model. The wave energy captured from the breakwater is spatially distributed on the plane of the front of the breakwater, and the converted pneumatic power increased when concentrated in front of the chamber. The change of the standing wave distribution is repeated according to the relationship between the incident wavelength and the length of the breakwater, and the difference in energy conversion performance of the OWC was confirmed.
