  • This paper deals with the numerical study on the displacement behavior of corner areas in an excavation site. Several corner areas always exist in the excavation site. The corner area has two free surfaces, which may become serious weak point from the viewpoint of structural stability. If the structural reinforcements are not applied adequately in corner areas, significant displacement of retaining wall could occur. What is worse, the collapse of retaining system rarely happens. In this paper, 3D numerical analyses were performed to investigate the effect of the arrangement of diagonal and normal strut. From the analysis results, it is found that the spacing between diagonal strut and normal strut should be less than 4m to avoid excessive displacement due to excavation.

  • The dynamic model and displacement control of piezoelectric actuators, which are commercially available materials for managing extremely small displacements in the range of sub-nanometers, are presented. Piezoceramics have electromechanical characteristics that transduce energy between the electrical and mechanical domains. However, they have hysteresis between the input voltage and output displacement, and this behavior is very demanding and complicated. In this paper, we propose a method of designing the control algorithm, and present the dynamic modeling equations that represent the hysteretic behavior between input voltage and output displacement. For this process, the piezoelectric actuator is treated as a second-order linear dynamic system and system constants are determined by the system identification method. Also, a classical PID controller is designed and used to regulate the output displacement of the actuator. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, numerical simulation results are presented.

  • A methodology to measure 3-dimensional vibrational displacement of a structure by digital photogrammetry is proposed in this paper. Stereo digital images of a vibrating structure were obtained by two non-metric cameras. Then by applying the collinearity condition to the images, the 3-d displacement time history data of a point or many points can be calculated by the present methodology. Experimental work was performed to measure the displacement time history for a cantilever beam excited by a piezoelectric patch, in which the in-depth displacement data obtained by the proposed method well matched the laser sensor data.

  • Structures show the phenomena of deformation and lowering of function with time-lapse by artificial environments and changes of geotechnical conditions or accumulation of initial deformation elements. This study aims the structural assessment of cultural heritage. Non-destructive evaluation techniques were applied to protect it from survey: 3D precise laser scanning surveying system was applied to measure the exact size, displacement and declining angles.

  • RAINBOW(Reduced And Internally Biased Oxide Wafers) are a new class of high-displacement, piezoelectric actuator produced by selectively removing oxygen from one surface of ceramic using a high-temperature chemical reduction process. In this paper, RAINBOW actuator materials of $0.4Pb(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-0.6Pb(Zr_{x}Ti_{1-x})O_3$ ceramics were prepared. Its dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated in the vicinity of MPB. The piezoelectric properties showed the maximum value of ${\epsilon}r$ = 4871, $d_{33}$ = 610 ($10^{-12}$ m/V), $d_{31}$ = -299 ($10^{-12}$ m/V), $k_{33}$ = $71\%$, Qm = 70, in $0.4Pb(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_{3}-0.6Pb(Zr_{405}Ti_{595})O_3$ composition sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$. The strain - electric field characteristics of RAINBOW actuator were significantly improved comparison with the conventional bulk actuator. The prepared RAINBOW actuator showed about $390\;{\mu}m/100\;V$ displacement.

  • In this study, the surface displacement was investigated according to the various depth of cover when the tunnel excavation equipment was used in a clay soil. For this the laboratory scaled model test was carried out using the soil sample similar to the in-situ conditions. We carried out four tests according to tunnel depth(1.5D, 2.0D, 2.5D, 3.0D). The distribution of impact due to tunnelling was quantitatively analyzed in the three-dimension by measuring the surface displacement. In addition, the pattern of surface displacements was figured out.

  • This experimental study was devoted to investigate skin friction of H group piles with uplift loading conditions in granite soil under laboratory test. Model piles made of steel embedded in weathered granite soil were used in this study. Pile arrangements($2{\times}2,\;3{\times}3$), pile space(2D, 4D, 6D), and soil density($D_r=40%,\;80%$) were tested. The main results obtained from the model tests can be summarized as follows. The series of tests found that ultimate uplift load and displacement for group piles were increased as piles space ratio increases to $D_r=40%$ of soil density. In the relative density of $D_r=80%$, bearing capacity for group piles was greater than for single pile. In the relative density of $D_r=40%$, the theoretical value of skin friction for group piles was greater than practical value. In the relative density of $D_r=80%$, both theoretical and practical value of skin friction for group piles were increased as piles space ratio increases.

  • In this paper, the cross-section properties of thin-walled beam are calculated through KSec2D in consist of Saint-Venant theory. To investigate tendency increasing the thickness, we analysis cross-section using isotropic material. In the asymmetric cross-section, we investigate effect caused cross-section properties accompanied increasing the thickness. The structural properties such as bending stiffness, tosion stiffness per area of each cross-section in three cases is compared through increasing thickness. The warping displacement calculated by KSed2D is modeled by CATIA. In order to show that warping influence the cross-section, the warping shape modeled CATIA is printed 3D printer.

  • A 3-D numerical analysis was carried out to observe potential effects of orientation of inherent weak zones to tunnel behaviors and stress distributions during tunnel excavation. Weak zones used for the analysis were placed at the upper 1D part from crown, on the crown and on the center of face, using orientations derived from the 6th RMR parameter for assessment of joint orientation effect on tunnel. Mechanical properties of rock mass were derived through a in-situ displacement measurement-based back analysis. Finally, a classification chart for crown settlement with five ranks based on orientation and location of weak zones is suggested.

  • The following results were obtained by analyzing the displacement, strain and stability of ground at the soft ground excavation using sheet pile. 1. Before setting the strut, the horizontal displacement was large on the upper part of excavated side, but after setting the strut, it showed concentrated phenomenon while being moved to go down to the excavated side. 2. After setting the strut, the displacement of sheet pile was rapidly decreased about a half compared with before setting the strut. The limitation of excavation depth was shown approximately GL-8m after setting double stair strut. 3. Maximum shear strain was gradually increased with depth of excavation, and local failure possibility due to shear deformation at the bottom of excavation was decreased by reinforcement of strut. 4. Maximum horizontal displacement of sheet pile at GL-7.5m was shown 0.2% of excavation depth in elasto-plastic method, and 0.6% in finite-element methods, and the maximum displacement was occurred around the bottom of excavation. 5. To secure the safety factor about penetration depth in the ground of modeling, D/H should be more than 0.89 in the case of one stair strut, and more than 0.77 in the case of double stair strut. 6. The relation of safety factor and D/H about the penetration depth was appeared, Fs=0.736(D/H) + 0.54 in the case of one stair strut, and Fs=0.750(D/H) + 0.62 in the case of double stair strut.
