  • In order to obtain the effective length factor of beam-column members of plane frames, this paper extensively used an alignment chart approach, based on the nomograph given in LRFD-AISC specification commentaries. However, it should be noted that various simplifications and assumptions were introduced in constructing the alignment chart. To overcome the practical limitations of the alignment chart, this paper proposes a simple but accurate procedure that determined the effective buckling length for stability design of main members of cable-supported bridges. This method requires the full system buckling analysis. The numerical examples showing the suitability of the present scheme are discussed and some conclusions are drawn.

  • The split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) has been widely used to determine the mechanical properties of materials at high loading rates. However, to ensure test reliability, the source of measurement error must be identified and eliminated. During the experiment, specimens were placed between the incident and the transmit bar. Contact friction between the test bars and specimen may cause errors. In this study, numerical experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of friction on the test results. In the SHPB test, the stress measured by the transmitted bar is assumed to be the flow stress of the test specimen. However, performing numerical experiments, it was shown that the stress measured by the transmit bar is axial stress components. When the contact surface is frictionless, the flow stress and axial stress of the specimen are approximately equal. On the other hand, when the contact surface is not frictionless, the flow stress and axial stress are no longer equal. The effect of friction on the difference between the flow stress and axial stress was investigated.

  • Combustion characteristics of full-scale gas generators were studied experimentally by changing the injector number installed at the injector head. Three full-scale gas generators were utilized; they have same total mass flow rate but mass flow rates per injector are different. Thirteen, nineteen and thirty seven injectors, which have internal-mixing and double-swirl characteristics, are distributed in injector heads, respectively. The results showed that pressure fluctuations in the gas generators with 13 and 19 injectors didn't occur around longitudinal resonant frequency, however longitudinal-mode pressure fluctuation appeared slightly in the gas generator with 37 injectors. As the number of injectors increased, deviations of temperature distribution in the combustion chamber decreased gradually, but the damage of injector LOx posts became a little severe.

  • A three dimensional numerical simulation of laminar flow and heat transfer in fully developed curved pipe flow has been performed to study the effects of Dean number and pipe curvature on the flow and temperature fields under the thermal boundary condition of axially uniform wall heat flux. The Reynolds number under consideration ranges from 100 to 4000, and the Prandtl number is 0.71. The curvature ratios are 0.01, 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1. The axial velocity and temperature profiles and the local Nusselt number obtained from the present study are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. To show the effects of pipe curvature on the flow and heat transfer, the resistance coefficients and heat transfer coefficients are computed and compared with the results of the previous theoretical and experimental studies. The averaged Nusselt number is correlated with Dean and Prandtl numbers. Furthermore, the critical Reynolds number for transition to turbulent flow is observed to depend upon the curvature ratio.

  • Since the subpanels of polygonal-section shell have the corners of an obtuse angle larger than 90 degree unlike general plate or box-section structures, this could have an influence on forming nodal lines against local plate buckling or stress distributions. However, there is not sufficient material in the relevant study results or design recommendations. The very feasible models of the initial imperfections were acquired through the literature studies and then the parametric studies were conducted along with the initial imperfection models by using the finite element method. The parameters like the size of residual stresses, the portion of compressive residual stresses, and steel grades were considered. From the parametric studies, it was found that the maximum residual stress is more influential factor than the distribution pattern of residual stresses. In addition, The design strength equations for the simply supported plates can be applicable to the determination of the local buckling strength of the polygonal cross-section shell structures.

Three full-scale gas generators, which have same total mass flow rate but mass flow rate per injector is different depending on their designs, were manufactured. Thirteen, nineteen and thirty seven injectors, which have internal-mixing and double-swirl characteristics, are distributed in injector heads, respectively. As the number of injectors installed in injector heads increased, temperature distribution in combustion chambers showed small deviations, but the damage of LOx posts increased.

  • In this paper, a new microstrip antenna using asymmetric U-shaped slotted ground is proposed for a switchable circular polarization sense. The proposed antenna is achieved a circularly polarization from orthogonal E-field distributions with 90 degree phase difference due to the asymmetrical U-shaped slot. Moreover, the circular polarization sense of the proposed antenna can be easily switchable with changing the symmetric plane of the U-shaped slots. As a result, the proposed antenna is implemented by two PIN diodes with two different bias condition for ON/OFF states. The measured axial ratios are about 1.5 dB without the dependence of the polarization sense and 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth are achieved 29 MHz with respect to about 1.2 % at 2.46 GHz operating frequency.

  • In this study, closed-cell aluminum foam with an initial crack was investigated to produce an axial load-time graph. Using the 10-kN Landmarks of MTS Corporation, a 15-mm/min velocity of mode I shape was applied to the aluminum foam specimen using the displacement control method. ABAQUS 6.10 simulation was used to model and analyze the identical model in three dimensions under conditions identical to those of the experiment. The energy release rate was calculated on the basis of an axial load-displacement graph obtained from the experiment and a transient image of the crack length, and then an FE model was analyzed on the basis of this fracture energy condition. The relation between load and displacement was discussed; it was found that the aluminum foam deformed somewhat less than the adhesive layer owing to the difference in elastic modulus.

  • This study investigates the shear behavior of architectural masonry veneer wall reinforced with specific reinforcement details proposed by this study. For this purpose, experimental tests were conducted using one un-reinforced masonry(URM) wall specimen and three reinforced masonry(RM) wall specimens under quasi static cyclic loads. Un-reinforced(plain) masonry wall is expressed that behavior and failure mode are different for aspect ratio(L/H) and axial compressive force. The test variables are wall aspect ratio and presence of reinforcement. These specimens are masonry structure for architectural clading that is not to exist the axial compressive force. thus the axial compressive force is excepted from test variable. Test result, Behavior of specimens are dominated over rocking mode, but final failure modes are combined with different behaviors. And FEMA273 has proposed the equation of shear strength of masonry pier subjected to in-plane loading. Shear strength equations are classified four types of failure mode that is Rocking, and Toe-Crushing, Bed-Joint-Sliding and Diagonal-Tension. FEMA273 equations predict the behavior modes well, but shear strength is shown in different result.

  • Hydrodynamics and mixing characteristics such as circulation time, mixing time, circulation velocity and axial dispersion coefficient were investigated using highly viscous pseudoplastic solutions of carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC) in an external circulation loop air-lift reactor with 13$\ell$ working volume. The superficial gas velocity was changed from 1.9 to 6.2cm/s and CMC concentration from 0 to 1.0wt%. The theoretical model based on the pressure balance is developed mathematically to predict liquid circulation velocity. Gas hold-up, circulation velocity and axial dispersion coefficient of liquid phase increased with increasing gas velocity and decreased slightly with increasing liquid viscosity. Mixing time and circulation time decreased with increasing gas velocity and increased with increasing liquid viscosity. Experimental data on liquid circulation velocity were in good agreement with the predicted values.
