  • This study explored the impact of daily hassles and the mediated effect of spiritual well-being and the moderated effect of coping styles on health and depression of middle-aged women. Subjects for this study were 230 Christian midlife women attending in the 10 churches on the metropolitan area. The data was analyzed using path analysis and moderator effect model with the structural equation modeling. Daily hassles are found to act as causes that damage physical or mental health and also elevate the level of depression. Daily hassles have a direct impact on health and depression, and at the same time, they also produce a partial mediation effect on spiritual well-being as a mediation factor. In other words, daily hassles impede spiritual well-being, and the deteriorated spiritual well-being, although its connection to physical health is not clear, is shown to damage mental health and elevate the level of depression. Analysis of coping styles related to the relationship between daily hassles and health and depression showed that, of the 12 coping styles, three, namely, self-criticism, positive interpretation and self-control, produced significant buffering effects. This study hopes to reveal the mediation factors that can minimize negative impact in the relationship between middle-aged women's daily hassles and healthiness and provide the basic material for figuring out practical implications and policy measures regarding the issue.

  • This study examines how economic factors such as income, parental support, perceived social status, and financial distress are associated with marital intentions among unmarried young adults in their 20's and 30's. Data were collected by an online survey, and a total of 567 people participated nationwide. Results from a hierarchical logistic regression suggest that (1) women's income was associated with their marital intentions, but not men's; (2) perceived social status was associated with marital intentions among both men and women; (3) men's expected parental support for marriage was associated with marital intentions; and (4) when three subfactors of the material values were included in the analysis, among women, it was found that the use of possessions to judge one's own success and that of others was positively associated with their marital intentions, and the belief that possessions and the acquisition of materials lead to happiness and satisfaction was negatively associated with their marital intentions. Further discussion is provided about the interpretation and implications of the results.

  • The main purpose of this study is to examine the suicide pattern during major holidays which are considered to be in high social integration - New Year's Day, Lunar New Year's Day, Harvest Festival (Chuseok) and Christmas. To confirm suicide patterns, this study hypothesized firstly, the number of suicides would decrease before and on each holiday, and secondly, the number of suicides would increase after each holiday. In detail, this study postulated different patterns by marital status and age groups. Utilizing "Causes of Death Statistics" from 2000 to 2005, the number of suicides by marital status and age group on each day is calculated and categorized by holiday. There are four major findings. First, the decrease in the number of suicides during holiday periods is significant. Second, different suicide patterns by marital status are not found. Third, the difference in suicide patterns by age groups is significant. Specifically, there is a decrease in the number of suicides of the old during Lunar New Year's Day and Harvest Festival (Chuseok). On the other hand, there is no changes in the number of suicides of the young during the same periods. Fourth, a decrease in the number of suicides regardless of marital status and age is found at the end of a year. These results mean that increased social integration is functioned as a "suicide immune system." However, each generation has its own main factor that increases social integration.

  • In the Joseon Dynasty, Confucian literati sacralized their daily lives through ritual practices across the three dimensions of time, place, and humanity. 1) In the dimension of time, they cultivated in their personal lives by accepting and thoroughly practicing the ethical principles of the Elementary Learning (『小學』). These practices of self-cultivation developed into ritualized practices of daily routine from the perspective of neo-Confucianism. 2) In the spatial dimension, local public schools (鄕校), local private academies (書院), and village private schools (書塾) were constructed as the symbolic places for disseminating Confucian norms through intensive seminar activities and collective learning sessions (講會). These places were also used for the pious recitations of selected Confucian proverbs that had been ritualized by Confucian literati. 3) In the dimension of humanity, pious consciousness, reinforced by the ritualized practice of periodic sacrifices or intensive reading, was subconsciously deepened and projected onto dreams individuals reported of their deceased fathers or teachers. According to the Confucian ritualization process, people were seen as being able to sanctify their daily lives by thoroughly internalizing and effectively realizing Confucian values.

The total average of the subjects' perceptions of the optimal end-of-life care was 4.04±0.82 on a five-point scale, indicating the overall level of 'agree' with the optimal end-of-life care. The total average of well dying perceived by the subjects was 3.63±1.14 on a five-point scale, and the most important recognized questions was to die peacefully. Of general characteristics, there was a significant differences on optimal end-of-life care according to age (t=-.97, p=.013). The nurse group in their 30s showed higher consent for end-of-life care than those in their 20s. An analysis of the correlation between the optimal end-of-life care and well-dying showed that there was no significant correlation. This study suggest that education should be provided to raise awareness of end-of-life care for young nurses with low experience.
