  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of pulsed magnetic field (PMF) and low frequency low level laser (LFLLL) stimuli on acupoint LI4 (Hegu) using photoplethysmography (PPG). Our PMF system was designed to generate maximum intensity of 0.20 T at a transition time of 0.16 ms, with pulse intervals of 1 Hz. The diode laser with wavelength of 650 nm and power of 5 mW was also employed. It was observed the change of the pulsating blood volume through measuring PPG signals from both hands. These results imply that stimulating acupoint LI4 with PMF and LFLLL improves the circulation of peripheral vascular system. In particular, PMF stimulation brings a big improvement of the blood flow even with short term stimulation of 3-4 minutes compared to LFLLL stimulus.

  • Silicon nanocrystalline thin films on p-type (100) silicon substrate have been fabricated by pulsed laser deposition technique using a Nd:YAG laser with the wavelength of 355, 532, and 1064 nm. The base vacuum in the chamber was down to $10^-6$ Torr and the laser energy densities were 1.0~3.0 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ After deposition, silicon nanocrystalline thin films have been annealed at nitrogen gas. Strong Blue and green luminescence from silicon nanocrystalline thin films have been observed at room temperature by photoluminescence and its peak energies shift to green when the wavelength is increased from 355 to 1064 nm.

  • The properties of pulsed photostimulated luminescence (PPSL) were measured to use as basis data for the detection of irradiated foodstuffs (34 different foods). Samples were packed in polyethylene bags and irradiated at 1, 5, and 10 kGy with a dose rate of 10 kGy/h. The samples irradiated were introduced in the sample chamber without other preparation and measured PPSL photon counts for 60 and 120 s. The PPSL photo counts of the irradiated samples were higher than the unirradiated, increased with increasing irradiation dose, and showed a good relationship between irradiation doses and photon counts in a multinomial expression. These results suggest that the detection of irradiated foodstuffs was possible by PPSL. Therefore, PPSL can be proposed as the method for the detection of irradiated foodstuffs.

  • To establish a detection method of irradiated perilla and sesame seeds, studies were performed with pulsed photostimulated luminescence (PPSL) and thermoluminescence (TL). The PPSL photon counts of the mineral separated from irradiated sesame and perilla seeds were higher than unirradiated one and exhibited an increase with increasing irradiation dose and mineral content. Also TL intensities of minerals separated from irradiated sesame and perilla seeds increased with increasing irradiation dose. In all samples, detection was possible with shapes and maximum TL temperatures of the second glow curves showing lower regions than those of the first glow curves and correctly classified as irradiated samples. Glow curve ratios of irradiated samples were higher than 0.5. These results suggest that PPSL and TL are applicable methods for the detection of irradiated perilla and sesame seeds.

  • The goal of this study if the optimization of discharge electrode for pulsed corona discharge reactor located in thermal power plant. For this purpose, we have performed experiments of NO$_{x}$ removal rate by exchange of discharge electrode diameter and arrangement of discharge electrode in the non -thermal plasma reaction facility using a ethylene as additive. If the diameter and numbers of discharge electrode were larger, the NO$_{x}$ removal rate was higher. From these results, if we optimized the shape and installed numbers of discharge electrode at the pilot plant, we could increase the NO$_{x}$ removal rate with less amount of additive than current amount.mount.

  • By using numerical analysis methods, through transmission type pulsed eddy current (PEC) testing is modeled and PEC signal responses due to varying material conductivity, permeability, thickness, lift-off and pulse width are investigated. Results show that the peak amplitude of PEC signal gets reduced and the time to reach the peak amplitude is increased as the material conductivity, permeability, and specimen thickness increase. Also, they indicate that the pulse width needs to be shorter when evaluating the material conductivity and the plate thickness using the peak amplitude, and when the pulse width is long, the peak time is found to be more useful. Other results related to lift-off variation are reported as well.

  • In this study, CPPS(Compact Pulsed Power Suppy) has been developed. The goals of CPPS are charging energy 150kJ, trapezoidal pulsed power shaping of 150~250MW with about 1msec pulse width, consecutive charging rate of several times/min, and total system volume below $0.5m^3$. The CPPS is composed of 4 modules of 37.5kJ which can be operated independently. This paper describes the design, setup and performance of CPPS in experiment and simulation.

  • We investigated the effects of pulsed magnetic fields (PMF) stimulus on electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha activity and heart rate variability (HRV) from electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements with various stimulus durations at acupoint PC9. The alpha activity in the EEG and the ratio of low frequency power and high frequency power (LHR) in the HRV, a reflection of sympathovagal activity, were increased and decreased, respectively, after PMF stimulus of 3 min. Our spectral analysis quantitatively proved that the changes in the EEG alpha activity were consistent with an autonomic function in the ECG. These findings suggest that appropriate PMF stimulus results in the same effect as that of acupuncture applied to the acupoint PC9, which is closely related to the parasympathetic activity of the autonomic nervous system.

  • ZnO thin films for light emission device have been deposited on sapphire and silicon substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique(PLD). A Nd:YAG laser was used with the wavelength of355 nm. In order to investigate the emission properties of ZnO thin films, Pl measurements with an Ar ion laser a light source using an excitation wavelength of 351 nm and a power of 100 mW are used. All spectra were taken at room temperature by using a grating spectrometer and a photomultiplier detector. ZnO exhibited Pl bands centers around 390, 510 and 640 nm, labeled near ultra-violet(UV), green and orange bands. Structural properties of ZnO thin films are analyzed with X-ray diffraction(XRD).

  • Ultra-high temperature (UHT) processed full fat milk inoculated with Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Bacillus stearothermophilus was exposed to 30-60 kV/cm square wave pulsed electric field (PEF) with $1\;{\mu}sec$ pulse width, and $26-210\;{\mu}sec$ treatment time in a continuous PEF treatment system. Eight log reduction was obtained for E. coli and P. fluorescens and 3 logs reduced for B. stearothermophilus under PEF treatment conditions of $210\;{\mu}sec$ treatment time, 60 kV/cm pulse intensity at $50^{\circ}$. There was no significant change in pH and titration acidity of milk after PEF treatment. The electrical energy required to achieve 8 log reduction for E. coli and P. fluorescens was estimated to be about 0.74 kJ/L.
