Smart textile industries have been precipitously developed and extended to electronic textiles and wearable devices in recent years. In particular, owing to an increasingly aging society, the elderly healthcare field has been highlighted in the smart device industries, and pressure sensors can be utilized in various elderly healthcare products such as flooring, mattress, and vital-sign measuring devices. Furthermore, elderly healthcare products need to be more lightweight and flexible. To fulfill those needs, textile-based pressure sensors is considered to be an attractive solution. In this research, to apply a textile to the second layer using a pressure sensing device, a novel type of conductive textile was fabricated using vapor phase polymerization of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). Vapor phase polymerization is suitable for preparing the conductive textile because the reaction can be controlled simply under various conditions and does not need high-temperature processing. The morphology of the obtained PEDOT-conductive textile was observed through the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM). Moreover, the resistance was measured using an ohmmeter and was confirmed to be adjustable to various resistance ranges depending on the concentration of the oxidant solution and polymerization conditions. A 3-layer 81-point multi-pressure sensor was fabricated using the PEDOT-conductive textile prepared herein. A 3D-viewer program was developed to evaluate the sensitivity and multi-pressure recognition of the textile-based multi-pressure sensor. Finally, we confirmed the possibility that PEDOT-conductive textiles could be utilized by pressure sensors.
We have studied a lifetime in organic light-emitting diodes depending on buffer layer. A transparent electrode of indium-tin-oxide(ITO) was used as an anode. And the cathode for electron injection was LiAl. Phthalocyanine Copper(CuPc), Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (PEDOT:PSS), or poly (9-vinylcarbazole)(PVK) material was used as a buffer layer. A thermal evaporation was performed to make a thickness of 40nm of TPD layer at a rate of $0.5{\sim}1\;{\AA}/s$ at a base pressure of $5{\times}10^{-6}\;torr$. A material of tris(8-hydroxyquinolinate) Aluminum($Alq_3$) was used as an electron transport and emissive layer. A thermal evaporation of $Alq_3$ was done at a deposition rate of $0.7{\sim}0.8[{\AA}/s]$ at a base pressure of $5{\times}10^{-6}\;torr$. By varying the buffer material, hole injection at the interface could be controlled because of the change in work function. Devices with CuPc and PEDOT:PSS buffer layer are superior to the other PVK buffer layer.
We proposed a simple process of creating electroconductive textiles by using PEDOT:PSS(Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate))/non-oxidized graphene to coat polyamide or polyurethane knitted fabric for smart healthcare purposes. Electroconductive textiles were obtained through a coating process that used different amounts of PEDOT:PSS/non-oxidized graphene solutions on polyamide/polyurethane knitted fabric. Subsequently, the surface, electrical, chemical, weight change, and elongation properties were evaluated according to the ratio of PEDOT:PSS/non-oxidized graphene composite(1.3 wt%:1.0 wt%; 1.3 wt%:0.6 wt%; 1.3 wt%:0.3 wt%) and the number of applications(once, twice, or thrice). The specimens' surface morphology was observed by FE-SEM. Further, their chemical structures were characterized using FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. The electrical properties measurement (sheet resistance) of the specimens, which was conducted by four-point contacts, shows the increase in conductivity with non-oxidized graphene and the number of applications in the composite system. Moreover, a test of the fabrics' mechanical properties shows that PEDOT:PSS/non-oxidized graphene-treated fabrics exhibited less elongation and better ability to recover their original length than untreated samples. Furthermore, the PEDOT:PSS/non-oxidized graphene polyamide/polyurethane knitted fabric was tested by performing tensile operations 1,000 times with a tensile strength of 20%; Consequently, sensors maintained a constant resistance without noticeable damage. This indicates that PEDOT:PSS/non-oxidized graphene strain sensors have sufficient durability and conductivity to be used as smart wearable devices.
The yellow base polymer light emitting diodes(PLEDs) with double emission and hole blocking layers were prepared to improve the light efficiency. ITO(indium tin oxide) and PEDOT : PSS[poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) : poly(styrene sulfolnate)] were used as cathode and hole transport materials. The PFO[poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene)] and MEH-PPV[poly(2-methoxy-5(2-ethylhe xoxy)-1,4-phenylenevinyle)] were used as the light emitting host and guest materials, respectively. TPBI[Tpbi1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzene] was used as hole blocking layer. To investigate the optimization of device structure, we prepared four kinds of PLED devices with different structures such as single emission layer(PFO : MEH-PPV), two double emission layer(PFO/PFO : MEH-PPV, PFO : MEH-PPV/PFO) and double emission layer with hole blocking layer(PFO/PFO : MEH-PPV/TPBI). The electrical and optical properties of prepared devices were compared. The prepared PLED showed yellow emission color with CIE color coordinates of x = 0.48, y = 0.48 at the applied voltage of 14V. The maximum luminance and current density were found to be about 3920 cd/$m^2$ and 130 mA/$cm^2$ at 14V, respectively for the PLED device with the structure of ITO/PEDOT : PSS/PFO/PFO : MEH-PPV/TPBI/LiF/Al.

We report the fabrication of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) via spray coating of electrochemically exfoliated graphene (EEG) and conducting polymer hybrid as electrodes. To reduce the roughness and sheet resistance of the EEG electrodes, subsequent coating of conducting polymer (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)) and acid treatment was performed. After that, active channel layer was developed by spin coating of semiconducting poly(3-hexylthiophene) on the hybrid electrodes to define the bottom gate bottom contact configuration. The OFET devices with the EEG/PEDOT:PSS hybrid electrodes showed a reasonable electrical performances (field effect mobility = $0.15cm^2V^{-1}\;s^{-1}$, on/off current ratio = $10^2$, and threshold voltage = -1.57V). Furthermore, the flexible OFET devices based on the Polydimethlsiloxane (PDMS) substrate and ion gel dielectric layer exhibited higher electrical performances (field effect mobility = $6.32cm^2V^{-1}\;s^{-1}$, on/off current ratio = $10^3$, and threshold voltage = -1.06V) and excellent electrical stability until 1000 cycles of bending test, which means that the hybrid electrode is applicable to various organic electronic devices, such as flexible OFETs, supercapacitors, organic sensors, and actuators.
The fabricated photovoltaic cells based on PIN heterojunctions, in this study, have a structure of ITO/poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS)/donor/donor:C60(10nm)/C60(35nm)/2, 9-dimethyl-4, 7-diphenyl-1, 10-phenanthroline(8nm)/Al(100nm). The thicknesses of an active layer(donor:C60), an electron transport layer(C60), and hole/exciton blocking layer(BCP) were fixed in the organic photovoltaic cells. We investigated the performance characteristics of the PIN organic photovoltaic cells with copper phthalocyanine(CuPc), tetracene and pentacene as a hole transport layer. Discussion on the photovoltaic cells with CuPc, tetracene and pentacene as a hole transport layer is focussed on the dependency of the power conversion efficiency on the deposition rate and thickness of hole transport layer. The device performance characteristics are elucidated from open-circuit-voltage(Voc), short-circuit-current(Jsc), fill factor(FF), and power conversion efficiency($\eta$). As the deposition rate of donor is reduced, the power conversion efficiency is enhanced by increased short-circuit-current(Jsc). The CuPc-based PIN photovoltaic cell has the limited dependency of power conversion efficiency on the thickness of hole transport layer because of relatively short exciton diffusion length. The photovoltaic cell using tetracene as a hole transport layer, which has relatively long diffusion length, has low efficiency. The maximum power conversion efficiencies of CuPc, tetracene, and pentacene-based photovoltaic cells with optimized deposition rate and thickness of hole transport layer have been achieved to 1.63%, 1.33% and 2.15%, respectively. The photovoltaic cell using pentacene as a hole transport layer showed the highest efficiency because of dramatically enhanced Jsc due to long diffusion length and strong thickness dependence.
Unlike a printing process, it is difficult to pattern organic thin films in the longitudinal (coating) direction using a coating process. In this paper, we have investigated the feasibility of patterning organic thin films using needles. To this end, we have slot-coated an aqueous poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) solution in the form of a fine stripe or large area and then applied the dual needle; one for discharging the main solvent of the underlying thin film and the other for sucking the dissolved thin film. We have found that the pattern width and depth increase as the moving speed of the plate decreases. However, it is observed that the sidewall slope is very gentle (the length of the slope is of the order of 200 ㎛) due to the fact that the discharged main solvent is widely spread and then isotropic etching occurs. With this scheme, we have also demonstrated that a fine stripe can be obtained by scanning the dual needle closely. To demonstrate its applicability to solution-processable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), we have also fabricated OLED with the patterned PEDOT:PSS stripe and observed the insulation property in the strong light-emitting stripe.
Ionic Transition Metal Complex based (iTMC) Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LEECs) have been drawn attention for cheap and easy-to-fabricate light-emitting device. LEEC is one of the promising candidate for next generation display and solid-state lighting applications which can cover the defects of current commercial OLEDs like complicated fabrication process and strong work-function dependent sturucture. We have investigated the performance characteristics of LEECs based on poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)-incorporated transition metal complex, which is tris(2, 2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) hexafluorophosphate in this study. There are advantages using conductive polymer-incorporated luminous layer to prevent light disturbance and absorbance while light-emitting process between light-emitting layer and transparent electrode like ITO. The devices were fabricated as sandwiched structure and light-emitting layer was deposited approximately 40nm thickness by spin coating and aluminum electrode was deposited using thermal evaporation process under the vacuum condition (10-3Pa). Current density and light intensity were measured using optical spectrometer, and surface morphology changes of the luminous layer were observed using XRD and AFM varying contents of PEDOT:PSS in the Ruthenium(II) complex solution. To observe enhanced ionic conductivity of PEDOT:PSS and luminous layer, space-charge-limited-currents model was introduced and it showed that the performances and stability of LEECs were improved. Main discussions are the followings. First, relationship between film thickness and performance characteristics of device was considered. Secondly, light-emitting behavior when PEDOT:PSS layer on the ITO, as a buffer, was introduced to iTMC LEECs. Finally, electrical properties including carrier mobility, current density-voltage, light intensity-voltage, response time and turn-on voltages were investigated.
We proposed a simple process of fabricating electroconductive textiles by coating conductive polymer PEDOT:PSS (Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate)) on biocompatible PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) nanofiber web for application to smart healthcare. Electroconductive textiles were obtained by a drop-coating process using different amounts of PEDOT:PSS solutions., DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) was then used as an additive in the post-treatment process to improve conductivity. The surface morphology of the specimens was observed by FE-SEM. The chemical structures of the specimens were characterized using FTIR. The electrical properties (linear and sheet resistance) of the specimens were measured. The effect of the bending angles on the electrical properties was also investigated to confirm their applicability as wearable smart textiles. FE-SEM and FTIR analysis confirmed that the deposition of PEDOT:PSS on the PLA nanofiber web surface was successful. The conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS/PLA nanofiber web was enhanced up to 1.5 ml with an increasing amount of PEDOT:PSS solutions, but there was no significant difference at 2.0 ml. The optimum condition of PEDOT:PSS deposition was established to 1.5 ml. Even when the specimen coated with 1.5 ml was bent every 30°, the change in the electrical resistance values was still low within 3.7 Ω. It confirmed that stable electrical performance was maintained and proved the applicability as a flexible textile sensor.
