  • The subject of turbulent premixed flames has been focused by many researchers for a number of decades. Especially, Borghi suggested a magnificent diagram classifying turbulent combustion areas and Lipatnikov and Chomiak modified this diagram. Recently, experimental techniques have been developed so that we can use PIV for measuring 2D velocity field and apply OH PLIF techniques for obtaining flame locations. In present study, a new diagram is proposed using strain rates and OH signal intensity. Thus, simultaneous PIV and OH PLIF measurements are used for shear strain rates and flame locations, respectively. It is believed that the shear strain rates represent flow characteristics such as turbulence intensity and the OH intensity indicates the flame characteristics such as burning velocities.

  • A two color PIV technique has been developed for visualization of complex and high speed flow in a ramjet combustor. Two color PIV has the advantages that velocity distributions in high speed flowfields can be measured simply by varying the time interval between two different laser beams and a directional ambiguity problem can be solved by color separation, and then a signal-to-noise ratio can be increased through nearly perfect cross-correlation. As a basic research of the ramjet engine, a 2-D shaped combustor with two symmetric air intakes has been manufactured and an experimental study has been conducted using a two color PIV technique. The flow characteristics such as recirculation zones, intake air mixing and turbulent kinetic energy have been investigated varying inlet angles and dome heights. It was found that the primary recirculation zone is affected mainly by the dome height, whereas the secondary recirculation zone is influenced by the air inlet angle.

  • A PIV system consisting of an image board slit into personal computer and 2-D sheet light projector is developed and related techniques to improve its performance are discussed. A grey-level cross correlation method capable of overcoming particle seeding limitation is suggested. And a sub-pixed interpolation method in determining the vector terminal is preposed by considering 8-neighbours correlation distributing patterns. Furthermore, pressure estimation from the acquired velocity vectors by applying the Poisson equation is persented with reasonable feasibility. As a practical application of the present system, evaporator flows are analysed and attained instantaneous velocity vectors reveal that the flow phenomena maintain turbulent fluctuation.

  • Tomographic particle image velocimetry (PIV) is a widely used method that measures a three-dimensional (3D) flow field by reconstructing camera images into voxel images. In 3D measurements, the setting and calibration of the camera's mapping function significantly impact the obtained results. In this study, a camera self-calibration technique is applied to tomographic PIV to reduce the occurrence of errors arising from such functions. The measured 3D particles are superimposed on the image to create a disparity map. Camera self-calibration is performed by reflecting the error of the disparity map to the center value of the particles. Vortex ring synthetic images are generated and the developed algorithm is applied. The optimal result is obtained by applying self-calibration once when the center error is less than 1 pixel and by applying self-calibration 2-3 times when it was more than 1 pixel; the maximum recovery ratio is 96%. Further self-correlation did not improve the results. The algorithm is evaluated by performing an actual rotational flow experiment, and the optimal result was obtained when self-calibration was applied once, as shown in the virtual image result. Therefore, the developed algorithm is expected to be utilized for the performance improvement of 3D flow measurements.

  • The Characteristics of the flowfield around two circular cylinders in tandem arrangement was investigated by PIV. Strouhal numbers. velocity vectors and velocity profiles were observed at centre-to-centre space ratios of P/D= 1.5. 2.0 and 2.5, and Reynolds number of $Re=3.0{\times}10^3{\sim}5.0{\times}10^3$. As the results the Strouhal numbers measured in the rear region of the cylinder of wake side were decreased with the space ratios. The flow between two cylinders was almost stagnated and the size of the stagnated region was larger in the close side than in the far side of the front cylinder. The direction of vortex between two cylinders was opposed each other with the small difference(${\alpha}\;{\pm}1.0^{\circ}$) of the attack angle ${\alpha}$.

  • The objective of the present study is to visualize the steady and pulsatile flow fields in a branching model by using a high-resolution PIV system. A bifurcated flow system was built for the experiments in the steady and pulsatile flows. Harvard pulsatile pump was used to generate the pulsatile velocity waveforms. Conifer powder as the tracing particles was added to water to visualize the flow fields. CCD cameras($1K{\times}1K$(high resolution camera) and $640{\times}480$(low resolution camera)) captured two consecutive particle images at once for the image processing of several cross sections on the flow system. The range validation method and the area interpolation method were used to obtain the final velocity vectors with high accuracy. The results of the image processing clearly showed the recirculation zones and the formation of the paired secondary flows from the distal to the apex of the branch flow in the bifurcated model. The results also indicated that the particle velocities at the inner wall moved faster than the velocities at the outer wall due to the inertial force effects and the helical motions generated in the branch flows as the flow proceeded toward the outer wall. Even though the PIV images from the high resolution camera were closer to the simulation results than the images from the low resolution camera at some locations, both results of the PIV experiments from the two cameras generally agreed quite well with the results from the computer simulations. Therefore, instead of using the expensive stereoscopic PIV or 3D PIV system, the three-dimensional flow fields in a bifurcated model could be easily and exactly investigated by this study.

  • A new acoustic field visualization technique is introduced in this study. Small particles of which density is small enough to follow up the air used for the noise field visualization. In order to quantify the noise, PIV(Particle Imaging Velocimetry) has been constructed. When the driving frequency is in the vicinity of the resonance frequency of the simplified 2-dimensional muffler system, an acoustic streaming is shown and of which velocity distribution is obtained through PIV technique. It is experimentally proved that the present technique is able to visualize and quantify the acoustic fields.

  • Variations of temperature and velocity fields in a Hele-Shaw convection cell (HSC) were investigated using a holographic interferometry and 2-D PIV system with varying Rayleigh number. To measure quasi-steady variation of temperature field, two different measurement methods of holographic interferometry, double-exposure method and real-time method, were employed. In the double-exposure method, unwanted waves were eliminated effectively using a digital image processing technique. The reconstructed images are clear, but transient flow cannot be reconstructed clearly. On the other hand, transient convective flow can be reconstructed well using the real-time method. However, the fringe patterns reconstructed by the real-time method contain more noises, compared with the double-exposure method. Experimental results show a steady flow pattern at low Rayleigh numbers and a time-dependent periodic flow structure at high Rayleigh numbers. The periodic flow pattern at high Rayleigh numbers obtained by the real-time holographic interferometer method is in a good agreement with the PIV results.

  • The turbulent flows in a tunnel mock-up($10L{\times}0.5W{\times}0.25H$ m3 : scale reduction 1/20) with rectangular cross section were investigated. The instantaneous velocity fields of Re = 49,029, 89,571 were measured by the 2-D PIV system which is consisted of double pulsed Nd:Yag laser and the tracer particles in the straight-duct mock-up where the flows were fully developed. The mean velocity profiles were taken from the ensemble averages of 1,000 instantaneous velocity fields. Simultaneously, numerical simulations(RANS) were performed to compare with experimental data using STREAM code. Non-linear eddy viscosity model (NLEVM : Abe-Jang-Leschziner Eddy Viscosity Model) was employed to resolve the turbulent flows in the duct. The calculated mean velocity profiles were well compared with PIV results. In the log-law profiles, the experimental data were in good agreement with numerical simulations all the way to the wake region except the viscous sub-layer (near wall region).
