  • The flexible highway pavement is a layered structure. The safety of the pavement is a function of the load induced by traffic and the layer strength of asphaltic concrete mixture. Therefore, the probabilistic approach was applied to the pavement system to evaluate the reliability. Monte Carlo simulation technique was used for the reliability study. Data used were colleted from the field or literature. A critical tensile strength for each layer was estimated based on a target reliability from the simulation. The critical strength was evaluated by comparing the strengths with the actual surface distress. The result shows that the critical strength estimated in the probabilistic approach is valid for the current highway condition.

  • Layer material properties of asphalt concrete changes with climatic conditions. Pavement design and analysis should be performed in the representative climatic condition that gives standard physical properties of pavement layer materials. In this study, an evaluation procedure of pavement design temperature is proposed and programed based on damage effect analysis using fatigue failure criterion. Three regions, Seoul, Daegeon, and Pusan, are chosen to obtain the representative climatic data of South Korea. Domestic pavement design temperature is developed by applying the proposed algorithm to 6 domestic pavement section models with the respective regional climatic data. Asphalt concrete pavement failure criterion is also proposed for the condition of developed domestic pavement design temperature. The design temperature for the region of South Korea is estimated as $l7^{\circ}C$, which is converted to $23.6^{\circ}C$ for the AC surface layer temperature. It is found that the procedure to determine design properties of AC surface layer material at $20^{\circ}C$ gives overestimated results of AC moduli for the domestic pavement system. From the comparison study, it is also found that the estimated pavement design temperature is similar to the result of SHELL Design Chart.

  • A new procedure needs to be developed to predict the dynamic layer properties under moving truck loads. In this study, a computer code to evaluate layer moduli of asphalt concrete pavement from measured interior deflections at various depths were developed and verified from numerical model tests. Interior deflections of the pavement are measured from Multi-Depth Deflectometer(MDD). It was found that errors between the given and backcalculated moduli in numerical analysis were less than 0.32% for several numerical models tested. When impact loads were used, a technique to determine the depth to virtual rigid base was proposed through the analysis of compressive wave velocity and impulse loading durations. It was found that errors between the given and backcalculated moduli in numerical analysis were less than 0.114% when virtual rigid base was considered in numerical analysis. The pavement behavior must be evaluated under various vehicle speeds when determining the dynamic interaction between the loading vehicle and pavement system. To evaluate the dynamic behavior on asphalt concrete pavement under various vehicle speeds, truck moving tests were carried out. From the test results with respect to vehicle speed, it was found that the vehicle speed had significant effect on actual response of the pavement system. The lower vehicle speed generates the higher interior deflections, and the lower dynamic modulus.

  • The practice of asphalt pavement recycling has grown rapidly over the decade, one of which is the cold in-place recycling with the foamed asphalt (CIR-foam) or the emulsified asphalt (CIR-emulsion). Particularly, in Iowa, the CIR has been widely used in rehabilitating the rural highways because it significantly increases the service life of the existing pavement. The CIR layer is typically overlaid by the hot mix asphalt (HMA) to protect it from water ingress and traffic load and obtain the required pavement structure and texture. Most public agencies have different curing requirements based on the number of curing days or the maximum moisture contents for the CIR before placing the overlay. The main objective of this study is to develop a moisture loss index that the public agency can use to monitor the moisture content of CIR layers in preparation for a timely placement of the wearing surface. First, the moisture contents were measured in the field using a portable time domain reflectometry (TDR) device. Second, the weather information in terms of rain fall, air temperature, humidity and wind speed was collected from the same location. Finally, a moisture loss index was developed as a function of initial moisture content, air temperature, humidity and wind speed. The developed moisture loss index based on the field measurements would help the public agency to determine an optimum timing of an overlay placement without continually measuring moisture conditions in the field.

  • The rapid economic development induced the massive road constructions, becoming bigger and high-speed of the vehicles. However, it brings lots of social problems, such as air pollutions, traffic noise and vibration. Special concrete block for the base course of asphalt pavement is needed to decrease traffic noise such as tire's explosive and vehicles sound, applying Helmholtz Resonators theory to asphalt pavement. If it is applied to the area where it happens considerable noise such as a junction, the street of a housing complex and a residential street, it is one of alternative methods to solve the social requirements of noise problems. This research examines couple of laboratory tests for the sound absorption effect of the concrete block and the base concrete block for quiet pavement. The specimens, which is fixed hall-size, space, depth as the condition of this research, are analysed of noise reduction effect using different noise levels of vehicles. Judging from the analysis of test results with vehicle noise volume, measurement distance, a form and size of the hall using the base concrete block, the use of special concrete base and quiet asphalt surface showed a good alternative solution for decreasing traffic noise level, from 4dB to 9dB.

  • The results of a recent case study for material characterizations and structural evaluation to design asphalt overlay thickness of William P Hobby airport in Houston, Texas are presented herein. The existing runway 12R-30L of Hobby airport consisted of thick asphalt overlay over Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) and the localized surface shoving as evident in the closure of surface groove has been observed recently. Using the field cored asphalt concrete mixtures, measurements of percent air voids, asphalt content and aggregate gradation were conducted to find out the causations of surface shoving and groove closure. The FAA layered elastic program, LEDFAA was utilized to evaluate pavement structural conditions for new asphalt overlay. Two different composition assumptions for existing pavement were made to evaluate the pavement as followings: 1) APC, Asphalt Concrete Overlay over PCC pavement and 2) AC, Asphalt Concrete pavement. Based on laboratory testing results, a ratio of percent passing #200 to asphalt content ranged 1.1 to 2.2, which is considered a high ratio and a tendency of tender mix design was observed. Thus, the localized surface shoving and groove closure of the runway 12R-30L could be attributed to the use of excessive fine contents and tender mix design. Based on the structural evaluation results, it was ascertained that the analysis assuming the pavement structure as AC pavement gives more realistic structural life when the asphalt overlay is thicker enough compared to PCC layer because the existing PCC pavement under asphalt overlay acts more like a high quality base material.

  • This study is a fundamental research for developing self-deicing function of snow-melting asphalt concrete for roadway pavement. The objective of this study is to develop technology of making self-snow-melting asphalt pavement and evaluate properties of the asphalt concrete containing deicers. Asphalt concrete with deicers and CRM was produced by dry process. The $\alpha$-deicer, CRM and F-deicer were used for sand asphalt mixtures of thin-layer pavement on the existing pavement. The $\alpha$-deicer, $\beta$-deicer, CRM A, CRM B and C were used for 13mm dense-graded mixtures on surface course. Penetration grade of 60-80 asphalt was used for asphalt mixtures. Marshall mix-design, indirect tensile strength, freezing and thawing test, analysis of extracted water were carried out to evaluate performance of self deicing function of asphalt mixtures. The study result showed that snow-melting asphalt mixtures had not only good mechanical characteristics and good snow-melting function, but also chemically safe in environmental point of view.

  • In this paper, the frost heaving and thawing characteristics of flexible pavement structure were evaluated in the large scale freezer which have a specification of temperature range $-20^{\circ}C{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ and $3.2m(L){\times}3.2m(B){\times}2.4m(H)$ in size. The insulated steel box with the size of $0.9m(L){\times}0.9m(B){\times}0.9m(H)$ was used to simulate actual pavement road structure. The variation of temperature, frost heave amount and frost heave pressure were measured through the instrument of TDS-602 data logger. LFWD (light falling weight deflectometer) was used to determine the change of deflection due to the frost heaving and thawing. Furthermore, the influence of aggregate layer to the freezing of the subgrade soil was studied to verify the function and effectiveness of the anti-freezing layer.

  • This thesis develops a fatigue model for the asphalt black base using the APT(Accelerated Pavement Testing) and analyzes the correlation of the APT analysis result with results of previous laboratory tests. For the APT testing, aggregate of the maximum grain size of 25mm(BB-3) was used as the material for the asphalt black base. The result of the APT revealed that the variable of the fatigue model, i.e. the maximum tensile stress on the bottom part of the pavement, increased as the number of loading increased while the modulus of elasticity for the pavement layer decreased gradually. The tensile strain was obtained from a strain gauge, and it was used to derive the values of $k_1=1.29{\times}10^{-6}$ and $k_2=3.02$ from the basic equation of the asphalt fatigue model, $N_f=k_1(\frac{1}{\epsilon})^{k_2}$. The fatigue life predicted from the asphalt fatigue model was greater than that obtained from laboratory experiments, given the same tensile strain. Additionally, a theory to estimate the remaining life of the pavement was developed using FWD, a non-destructive experiment.
