The fundamental theory and application of boundary element method for two-dimensional problem are introduced in this paper. Based on this boundary element procedure, several numerical calculations such as circular cavity problem, a thin plate with hole under tension and a long thick-walled cylinder under internal pressure are performed. The numerical results show fairly good agreement with exact solutions or results of finite element method.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of loading at three different occlusal surface position of the gold alloy crown on the stress distributions in surrounding bone, utilizing 3-dimensional finite element method. A three dimensional finite element model of an implant with simplified gold alloy crown and supporting bone was developed for this study. A oblique or vertical load of 100 N was applied at the following position at each FE model : 1) center of occlusal surface, 2) a point on the buccal side away from center of occlusal surface (COS) by 2.8mm, 3) a point on the lingual side away from COS by 2.8mm. In the results, Minimum von Mises stresses under vertical load or oblique load of 100N were about 6MPa at the center of occlusal surface and about 40MPa at the point on the buccal side, respectively. From the results we could come to the conclusion that occlusive loading position could be an important factor for establishment of structural safety of supporting bone.
To evaluate the effect of interface conditions and retention grooves in the Class V composite resin restoration of the maxillary first premolar, the distribution of the values of stress and displacement was analyzed with the two-dimensional finite element method. The results were obtained as follows : 1. Boundary elements and Stiffness values could be used as the interface parameters in the, finite element method. 2. The amount of restriction of the displacement at the cervical margin by placing a retention groove at the cervical wall was about three times as high as that by placing a retention groove at the occlusal wall. 3. Because of the relative amount of tensile components of the stress values in the bucco-lingual direction, the possibility of dislocation of the restoration was much higher at the cervical margin than at the occlusal margin. 4. It might be recommended that both occlusal and cervical retention grooves be used routinely, but if one, it be placed at the cervical wall.
A time domain finite element based method is employed to analyze wave radiation by multiple cylinders. The nonlinear free surface and body surface boundary conditions are satisfied based on the perturbation method up to the second order. The first- and second-order velocity potential problems at each time step are solved through a finite element method (FEM). The matrix equation of the FEM is solved through an iteration and the initial solution is obtained from the result at the previous time step. The three-dimensional (3D) mesh required is generated based on a two-dimensional (2D) hybrid mesh on a horizontal plane and its extension in the vertical direction. The hybrid mesh is generated by combining an unstructured grid away from cylinders and two structured grids near the cylinder and the artificial boundary, respectively. The fluid velocity on the free surface and the cylinder surface are calculated by using a differential method. Results for various configurations including two-cylinder and four-cylinder cases are provided to show the mutual influence due to cylinders on the first and second waves and forces.
Finite element method has been developed recently for the solution of the convection-diffusion problems. Finite element method has several advantages over finite difference method, but its requirement of the larger memory size of the computer has prevented from wide application. In the present study, line-by-line technique has been implemented to finite element method to overcome this disadvantage. Two dimensional laminar natural convection in square cavity was chosen as an example in this study. The numerical result shows good agreement with bench mark solution and the size of the coefficient marix has been reduced drastically.
We formulate and study a finite element method for a linearized steady state, compressible, viscous Navier-Stokes equations in 2D, based on the discontinuous Galerkin method. Dislike the standard discontinuous galerkin method, we do not assume that the triangle sides be bounded away from the characteristic direction. the unique stability follows from the inf-sup condition established on the finite dimensional spaces for the (incompressible) Stokes problem. An error analysis having a jump discontinuity for pressure is shown.
The finite leement method is a effetive analysis technique for obtaining approximate solutions of continuum problems with boundary conditions. This paper deals with the programming for the application of this method and the preciser analysis of the magnetic field in the air gap of the linear stepper motor by the method. The finite element analysis based on the variational principle is adopted and the computer program for reducing input data and a large number of the memory words required by the system matrix is presented. The 2-dimensional analysis of the air gap is made and several cases according to varying the position are considered.
The explicit scheme for finite element analysis of sheet metal forming problems has been widely used for providing practical solutions since it improves the convergency problem, memory size and computational time especially for the case of complicated geometry and large element number. The explicit schemes in general use are based on the elastic-plastic modeling of material requiring large computataion time. In the present work, a basic formulation for rigid-plastic explicit finite element analysis of plain strain sheet metal forming problems has been proposed. The effect of some basic parameters involved in the dynamic analysis has been studied in detail. Thus, the effective ranges of parameters have been proposed for numerical simultion by the rigid-plastic explicit finite element method. A direct trial-and-error method is introduced to treat contact and friction. In computation, sheet material is assumed to possess normal anisotropy and rigid-plastic workhardening characteristics. In order to show the validity and effectiveness of the proposed explicit scheme, computations are carried out for cylindrical punch stretching and the computational results are compared with those by the implicit scheme as well as with a commercial code. The proposed rigid-plastic exlicit finite element method can be used as a robust and efficient computational method for analysis of sheet metal forming.
In order to execute efficiently the free vibration analysis of 2-dimensional structures like plate structures, the author developed the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method. This method is based on the combination of the modeling techniques in the FEM and the transfer technique of the stiffness coefficient in the transfer stiffness coefficient method. Numerical results of the simply supported and the elastic supported rectangular plates showed that the present method can be successfully applied to the free vibration analysis of plate structures on a personal computer. We confirmed that, in the case of analyzing the free vibration of rectangular plate structures, the present method is superior to the FEM from the viewpoint of computation time and storage.
Mathematical model has been developed for determination of temperature field in multilayer pavement and subgrade, which considers transfer of heat by conduction and convection, receiving of heat from total solar radiation and atmosphere emission, output of heat due to the emission from the surface of pavement. The developed model has been realized by the finite element method for two dimensional problem using two dimensional second order finite element. Calculations for temperature field have been made with the programme realized on the standard mathematical package MATLAB. Accuracy of the developed model has been evaluated by comparison of temperatures, obtained theoretically and experimentally. The results of comparison showed high accuracy of the model. Long-term calculation (within three months) has been made in pavement points in accordance with the data of meteorological station for air temperature. Some regularities have been determined for variation of temperature field.
