  • Tunnel construction is a complex three dimensional operation. Since, however, it is neither possible nor useful to simulate all conditions and parameters in detail, a simplified two dimensional model is commonly employed in practice. The simulation of three dimensional conditions by a two dimensional model should use empirical parameters. The numerical predictions indicate that analysis results are highly dependent on the parameters. An improved modelling method based on time was adopted to account for three dimensional effect at the tunnel heading and time dependent nature, and used to perform an analysis of tunnelling in decomposed granite. The effects of weathering degree, tunnel shape and multi-drift excavation were investigated by using the method. It is identified that a structural benefit can be obtained by adopting a horse-shoe-shaped cross section with multi-drift excavation in mixed-force ground condition.

  • Internal contact scheme between two free surfaces on one deforming body has been proposed by using the penalty method. It has been imposed to be internal boundary condition on two-dimensional thermo-viscoplastic finite element method so as to analyze one deforming body, which has two free surfaces penetrating each others. Analysis of side pressing with a circular void and a inclined elliptic hole have been carried out in order to verity the proposed contact scheme. A finite element code imposed internal boundary condition has been applied to two-dimensional analysis of free forging of large ingot with a void. Through the analysis, effects of working parameters in order to consolidate voids have been investigated.

  • For BEM analyses of the impact problems of dissimilar materials, the connected multi-region method using perfect bonded conditions on the interface boundaries was added to two-dimensional Laplace transformed-domain BEM program for a single region analysis. It was confirmed that the BEM results of impact problems of a single-region and multi-regions for a homogeneous isotropic material are agreed well. The two-dimensional Laplace transformed-domain BEM program combined with connected multi-region method was applied to analyse several impact problems of dissimilar materials. Also the feasibility of BEM impact analyses was investigated for dissimilar materials by the analysis of the BEM results for impact problems of dissimilar materials in terms of physical aspects. As for an application, the two-dimensional Laplace transformed BEM concerning impact problems of cracks at the interface of dissimilar materials and the determinating process of the dynamic stress intensity factors by extrapolation method are presented in this paper.

  • This paper represents the results carried out to determine the dynamic response characteristics of Korea High Speed Rail(KHSR) bridges. The responses of the KHSR bridges subjected to the moving train loading are obtained through the simplified method for the 2-dimensional train/track/bridge interaction analysis in which the eccentricity of axle loads and the effect of the torsional forces acting on the bridge are included for the more accurate train/track/bridge interaction analysis. The results of the analyses are compared with the field test data to verify the performance of the 2-dimensional train/track/bridge interaction analysis method.

  • In the evaluation of asymmetric buildings, torsional effects should be considered by three-dimensional analysis. However, this analysis is time-consuming and requires great efforts. The goal of this study is to give a comprehensible and simple procedure in the seismic evaluation by using two-dimensional analysis of asymmetric buildings so that practicing engineers can easily adapt it to their work.

  • These days, surveying instruments are developing rapidly and the precision is improving continuously. The building of three dimensional terrains of high precision are possible and the calculation of the areas or the volumes have high precision due to the development of the technique of the spatial information system using computer. But actually, in construction site they calculate two-dimensional area using the traditional method, plate table surveying, planimeter, and then get three-dimensional area through multiplying two-dimensional area by the slope correction factor. In this study, we show the defect and inefficiency of the calculation of area by the traditional methods and survey the area with Electric Distance Measurement and GPS instrument. With this data, we made the three dimensional terrain model and calculated two-dimensional area, three-dimensional area. After that, we compared areas that calculated by algorithm of triangulated irregular network and analysis of grid method with standard area that calculated by the traditional method. Finally, this paper suggested more effective and precious method in calculating three-dimensional area.

  • Based on the existing research results, a three-dimensional failure mechanism of tunnel face was constructed. The dynamic seismic effect was taken into account on the basis of quasi-static method, and the nonlinear Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion was introduced into the limit analysis by using the tangent technique. The collapse pressure along with the failure scope of tunnel face was obtained through nonlinear limit analysis. Results show that nonlinear coefficient and initial cohesion have a significant impact on the collapse pressure and failure zone. However, horizontal seismic coefficient and vertical seismic proportional coefficient merely affect the collapse pressure and the location of failure surface. And their influences on the volume and height of failure mechanism are not obvious. By virtue of reliability theory, the influences of horizontal and vertical seismic forces on supporting pressure were discussed. Meanwhile, safety factors and supporting pressures with respect to 3 different safety levels are also obtained, which may provide references to seismic design of tunnels.

  • Principal component analysis is applied to reduce p-dimensions into q-dimensions ( $q {\leq} p$). Any partition of a collection of data points with p and q variables generated by the application of six hierarchical clustering methods is re-classified by discriminant analysis. From the application of discriminant analysis through each hierarchical clustering method, correct classification ratios are obtained. The results illustrate which method is more reasonable in exploratory data analysis.
