The mechanical properties of the various heat treatment conditions on Ti-15Mo-3Nb-3Al-0.2Si alloy plates were examined. XRD patterns from the surface of Ti-15Mo-3Nb-3Al-0.2Si were analyzed as a solution-treated Ti alloy has the single-phase ${\beta}$ structure whereas the aged Ti alloys have the ${\beta}$ matrix embedded with ${\alpha}$ needles. High strength (~1500 MPa) with decent ductility (7%) was obtained by the Ti alloy double aged at $300^{\circ}C$ and $520^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours each. The double-aged alloy exhibits the finer structure than the single-aged alloy at $300^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours because of the higher nucleation rate of ${\alpha}$ needles at an initial low aging temperature ($320^{\circ}C$). TEM observation revealed that the fine nanostructure with ${\alpha}$ needles in the ${\beta}$ matrix ensured the excellent mechanical properties in the double aged Ti-15Mo-3Nb-3Al-0.2Si alloy. In the solution treated alloy, the yield drop, stress-serrations and the ductility minimum typically associated with dynamic strain aging can be attributed to the dynamic interaction between dislocations and oxygen atoms. The yield drop and the stress serration were not observed in aged samples because the geometrically introduced dislocations due to phase precipitates suppressed the dynamic strain aging.
In this work, ultrasonic vibration (UV) and rheo-squeeze casting was first applied on the Mg alloy reinforced with long period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure. The semisolid slurry of Mg-Zn-Y alloy was prepared by UV and processed by rheosqueeze casting in succession. The effects of UV, Zr addition and squeeze pressure on microstructure of semisolid Mg-Zn-Y alloy were studied. The results revealed that the synergic effect of UV and Zr addition generated a finer microstructure than either one alone when preparing the slurries. Rheo-squeeze casting could significantly refine the LPSO structure and ${\alpha}-Mg$ matrix in $Mg_{96.9}Zn_1Y_2Zr_{0.1}$ alloy without changing the phase compositions or the type of LPSO structure. When the squeeze pressure increased from 0 to 400 MPa, the block LPSO structure was completely eliminated and the average thickness of LPSO structure decreased from 9.8 to $4.3{\mu}m$. Under 400 MPa squeeze pressure, the tensile strength and elongation of the rheocast $Mg_{96.9}Zn_1Y_2Zr_{0.1}$ alloy reached the maximum values, which were 234 MPa and 17.6%, respectively, due to its fine ${\alpha}-Mg$ matrix (${\alpha}1-Mg$ and ${\alpha}2-Mg$ grains) and LPSO structure.

Variations of dielectric and piezoelectric properties and associated phase transformation of <001> -oriented rhombohedral 0.92Pb (Zn$\sub$1/3/Nb$\sub$2/3/)O$_3$-0.08PbTiO$_3$ single crystals were investigated. The longitudinal strain level was found to abruptly increase at 15 kV/cm, corresponding to that where an induced phase appears within a multidomain matrix. Drastic decreases in the dielectric constant, transverse coupling, and transverse piezoelectric coefficient associated with the E-field induced phase were the result of increased crystal anisotropy in PZN-PT crystals. By contrast, the thickness coupling increased from 53 % at 0 kV/cm to 64 % at 45 kV/cm, also associated with this phase transition under the E-field. The measured dielectric and piezflelectric properties found for the induced phase state were nearly identical to those of <001> poled tetragonal (1-x)PZN-xPT (x>0.1) crystals. Based on these results, it is evident that the symmetry of induced phase is tetragonal.
In order to understand the structure of the existing aggregate in the nanocomposite, which has been prepared with polyester and trisilanolisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(TBPOSS), laser light scattering(LLS) and SEM-EDS were applied to its 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol solution and original sample, respectively. Although aggregate particles appeared as spherical shape of the average diameter of 120 nm in SEM image, they were not microgels but almost linear copolymer chains ($M_w=2.3{\times}10^6\;g/mol$) alternating 320 molecules of TBPOSS with polyester subchains. It has been microphase-separated from the matrix polyester due to the difference of chemical composition. As the matrix, polyester chain of $M_w=4.0{\times}10^4\;g/mol$ had averagely 2.5 molecules of TBPOSS per chain. It is also found that about 93% of total TBPOSS molecules existed in matrix phase and the residual 7% in spherically aggregated phase.

Samples of extruded dispersions of 24 vol.% spherical U-2wt%Mo and U-10wt.%Mo powders in an aluminum matrix were annealed for over 2,000 hours at 40$0^{\circ}C$. No significant dimensional changes occurred in the U-1025.%Mo/aluminum dispersions. The U-2wt.%Mo/aluminum dispersion, however, increased in volume by 26% after 2,000 hours at 40$0^{\circ}C$. This large volume change is mainly due to the formation of voids and cracks resulting from nearly complete interdiffusion of U-Mo and aluminum. Interdiffusion between U-10wt.%Mo and aluminum was found to be minimal. The different diffusion behavior is primarily due to the fact that U-2wt.%Mo decomposes from an as-atomized metastable r-phase(bcc) solid solution into the equilibrium r-U and U$_2$Mo two-phase structure during the experiment, whereas U-10wt.%Mo retains the metastable r-phase structure after the 2,000 hours anneal and thereby displays superior thermal compatibility with aluminum compared to U-2wt.%Mo. In addition, the molybdenium supersaturated in U-10wt.%Mo particles inhibits the diffusion of aluminum atoms along the grain boundary into the particle. Also, the dissolution of only a few Mo atoms in UAL$_3$ retards the formation of the intermediate phase, as Mo atoms need to migrate from new intermetallic compounds to unreacted islands.
In rapidly solidified $Al_{92-x}Nd_8$(Cu,Ag)x ($0{\leq}X{\leq}10at%$) alloys, amorphous single phases were obtained in the ranges of $Oat%{\leq}X{\leq}4at%$ for Al-Nd-Cu system and $Oat%{\leq}X{\leq}6at%$ for Al-Nd-Ag system, respectively. Mesoscopic structures consisted of amorphous and crystalline phases were formed above solute ranges. It was founded that the mesoscopic structures were also formed near 1st exothermic peak on DSC curve by aging in amorphous single phase alloys. For example, amorphous $Al_{92-x}Nd_8$(Cu,Ag)x (X=2.4at%) alloys containing nanoscale Al particles and compounds, i.e., mesoscopic structure, exhibited higher tensile fracture strength(${\sigma}_f$) than those of amorphous single phase alloys with the same composition. The ${\sigma}_f$ showed a maximum value in the $V_f$ ranges of 10~15%. The reason is presumed that the nanoscale precipitates which have higher mechanical strength compared with the amorphous phase with the same composition act as an effective resistance to shear deformation of the amorphous matrix.
Ni coated $Al_2O_3$ composite was successfully Prepared by the electroless deposition Process. The average size of Ni particles coated on the $Al_2O_3$ matrix powder was about 20 nm. It was hard to find any reaction compound as an impurity at interface between $Al_2O_3$ and Ni particles after sintering. The characterization of microstructure crystal structure and fracture behavior of the sintered body were investigated using XRD, TEM and Victors hardness tester, and compared with those of the sintered $Al_2O_3$ monolithic body. Many dislocations were observed in the Ni phase due to the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between $Al_2O_3$ and Ni phase, and no observed microcracks at their $Al_2O_3$ and Ni interface. In the $Al_2O_3$/Ni composite, the main fracture mode showed a mixed fracture with intergranular and transgranuluar type having some ,surface roughness. The fracture toughness was slightly increased due to the plastic deformation mechanism of Ni phase in the $Al_2O_3$/Ni composite.
We report the structural characterization of $Bi_xZn_{1-x}O$ thin films grown on c-plane sapphire substrates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. By increasing the Bi flux during the growth process, $Bi_xZn_{1-x}O$ thin films with various Bi contents (x = 0~13.17 atomic %) were prepared. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements revealed the formation of Bi-oxide phase in (Bi)ZnO after increasing the Bi content. However, it was impossible to determine whether the formed Bi-oxide phase was the monoclinic structure ${\alpha}-Bi_2O_3$ or the tetragonal structure ${\beta}-Bi_2O_3$ by means of XRD ${\theta}-2{\theta}$ measurements, as the observed diffraction peaks of the $2{\theta}$ value at ~28 were very close to reflection of the (012) plane for the monoclinic structure ${\alpha}-Bi_2O_3$ at 28.064 and the reflection of the (201) plane for the tetragonal structure ${\beta}-Bi_2O_3$ at 27.946. By means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) using a diffraction pattern analysis and a high-resolution lattice image, it was finally determined as the monoclinic structure ${\alpha}-Bi_2O_3$ phase. To investigate the distribution of the Bi and Bi-oxide phases in BiZnO films, elemental mapping using energy dispersive spectroscopy equipped with TEM was performed. Considering both the XRD and the elemental mapping results, it was concluded that hexagonal-structure wurtzite $Bi_xZn_{1-x}O$ thin films were grown at a low Bi content (x = ~2.37 atomic %) without the formation of ${\alpha}-Bi_2O_3$. However, the increased Bi content (x = 4.63~13.17 atomic %) resulted in the formation of the ${\alpha}-Bi_2O_3$ phase in the wurtzite (Bi)ZnO matrix.
Effect of tempering treatment on the mechanical properties of 12Cr heat resistant steel with ferrite phase was investigate in this study. As time and temperature of tempering treatment were increase, C and Cr contents in matrix structure were decreased. Due to increase of the amount of Cr26C6 type carbides. It was confirmed in mechanical properties experimental that tensile strength and hardness were decreased, while elongation and impact value were, increased with increasing the time and temperature.
The effect of $ZrO_2$ dispersed phase on the mechanical properties in $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$system has been studied. There are both metastable tetragonal phase and stable monoclinic phase of $ZrO_2$particles diespersed in Al2O3 matrix at room temperature. Metastable tetragonal $ZrO_2$ changes to the stable monoclinic structure within the stress field of the crack. And microcracks are formed by the expansion of $ZrO_2$during the tetragonal-monoclinic transformation on cooling. Therefore stress-induced phase transformation and inclusion-induced microcracking contribute to the mec-hanical properties of $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$system. Sintered composites containing 10m/o $ZrO_2$ yield KiC values of 6.5MN/$m^{3/2}$ much greater than that of pure $Al_2O_3$ This increase results from microcrack extension and stress-induced phase transformation absor-bing energy by crack propagation. Flexural strength of composites is decreased considerably in comparison with pure $Al_2O_3$ This decrease results from microcrack as a crack former and higher porosity than pure $Al_2O_3$.
