Organic substances are released from phytoplankton cells during all phases of growth. The type and amounts of organic substance excreted and the effects of nutrient limitation are often highly species-specific. Dinoflagellate, Cochlodinium polykrikoides grown in batch culture produced an exopolysaccharide. Exopolysaccharide and intracellular polysaccharide concentrations increased as C. polykrikoides cultures progressed from exponential phase, through stationary phase, to declining phase. In the exponential phase, the concentration of exopolysaccharide was relatively low, but in the stationary phase, it showed a rapid increase which seemed to coincide with the depletion of nitrate from the medium. Of the 20 amino acids analyzed, proline dominated in the organic matter of all cultures ranging from 48.2 to 79.9 nmol L–1, and constituting the 20-90% of total amino acids, and followed by histamine varying from 0.7 to 47.5 nmol L–1. Leucine and cysteine were also abundant in the stationary phase. The release rates of exopolysaccharide and intracellualr polysaccharide were higher the end of stationary phase than in the exponential phase. Exopolysaccharide concentration per cell was more than two times higher during the end of stationary phase than that in exponential phase. C. polykrikoides produced extracellular polysaccharide at a rate of 47.04 pg cell–1 day–1.
Previous research in our laboratory has demonstrated the importance of lactose in phase I and II pig starter diets. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the use of a carbohydrate by-product (food by-products) as a replacement for lactose. In Exp. I, 120 weaned pigs ($14{\pm}2d$ and 5.65kg) were allotted in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) to 10 replications with four pigs per pen. This experiment evaluated three carbohydrate sources (lactose, carbohydrate by-product, and 50-50 blend of the carbohydrate by-product and lactose). The carbohydrate sources were added at 26% in the phase I diets and 15% in the phase II diets. Phase I diets contained 7.5% spray dried plasma protein (SDP). The phase I diets were fed from d 0 to 14 and the phase II diets from d 15 to 28. There were no significant differences between carbohydrate sources on pig performance in phase I. However, during phase II pigs fed the diet with lactose had an improved gain/feed ratio (G/F) (p=0.06) compared to pigs fed the carbohydrate by-product. For the entire 28 d trial ADG, ADFI and G/F were similar for the 50-50 blend and those fed lactose. Total replacement of lactose with the carbohydrate byproduct resulted in a reduced G/F (p=0.09). Exp. 2 used 100 weaned pigs ($17{\pm}2d$ and 4.75kg) with five replications with five pigs per pen. This experiment evaluated four carbohydrate treatments (lactose, carbohydrate by-products, 50-50 blend, and corn). All phase I diets contained 3.5% SDP with the carbohydrate sources included at 15%, and were fed d 0 to 14. The phase II diets contained 7.5% of the carbohydrate sources and were fed d 15 to 27. A common phase III diet was fed d 28 to 42. During all phases pigs fed com tended to have a lower ADG than pigs fed the other carbohydrate sources with the 50-50 blend resulting in the highest ADG. The results of both experiments suggest that this carbohydrate by-product can replace at least 50% of the lactose in phase I and phase II pig starter diets.

In this article, the effect of silica addition on the phase transformation characteristics of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles synthesized by using an $O_2$-enriched coflow, hydrogen, diffusion flame was investigated. TTIP(titanium tetra-isopropoxide) and TEOS(tetraethyl-orthosilicate) were used as precursors for $TiO_2$ and $SiO_2$ nanoparticles, respectively. Based on the results from TEM and XRD analysis, it is believed that the silica addition on the flame synthesis of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles reduces the particle size distribution and raises the temperature of the phase transition from anatase to rutile. But the reduced sizes of the synthesized particles due to the silica addition made the sintering and phase transformation of particles more easily.
In this study, it is performed numerical simulation on multi-phase flow by means of CIP-CSI2 scheme. It is applied In a two-phase free surface flow problem at a high density ratio equivalent to that of an air-water system, for examining the computational capability. The method that is being developed and improved is a CIP(Constrained Interpolation Profile) and CSL2(Conservative Semi-Lagrangian) based Cartesian Grid Method.
A fine $\alpha$-Al2O3 powder was prepared by sol-gel process for membrane application. And it was carried out by adding 1.5wt% $\alpha$-Al2O3 powders(mean size : 87 nm) as seeds to the prepared sols and by controlling the heating schedule (the heating rate and the soaking time) to prevent the microstructural change, which occured during $\theta$-to $\alpha$Al2O3 phase transformation. The seeded $\alpha$-Al2O3 particles acted as the heterogeneous nucleation sites for the $\alpha$-Al2O3 nucleation during the transformation of $\theta$- to $\alpha$-Al2O3 and resulted in increasing the driving force of phase transformation to activate the formation of $\alpha$-Al2O3 phase at 82$0^{\circ}C$. By $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeding and controlling of heating condition the phase transformation of $\theta$- to $\alpha$-Al2O3 was accomplished at low temperature and the grain growth process was depressed. Therefore, the unsupported membrane could be fabricated in $\alpha$-Al2O3 . The average diameter of pores in the fabricated membrane was 7 nm and the porosity was 47%.

Partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) is an attractive material for thermal barrier coating. Zirconia exists in three crystallographic phases: cubic, tetragonal and monoclinic. Especially, the phase transformation of tetragonal phase to monoclinic phase accompanies significant volume expansion, so this transition generally results in cracking and contributes to the failure of the TBC system. Both the plasma sprayed ZrO$_2$-8Y$_2$O$_3$ (YSZ) coat and the ZrO$_2$,-25CeO$_2$,-2.5Y$_2$O$_3$ (CYSZ) coat are isothermally heat -treated at 130$0^{\circ}C$ and 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 100hr and cooled at different cooling rates. The monoclinic phase is not discovered in all the CYSZ annealed at 130$0^{\circ}C$ and 150$0^{\circ}C$. In the 150$0^{\circ}C$ heat-treated specimens, the YSZ contains some monoclinic phase while none exists in the 130$0^{\circ}C$ heat-treated YSZ coat. For the YSZ, the different phase transformation behaviors at the two temperatures are due to the stabilizer concentration of high temperature phases and grain growth. For the YSZ with 150$0^{\circ}C$-100hr annealing, the amount of monoclinic phase increased with the slower cooling rate. The extra oxygen vacancy, thermal stress, and c to t'phase transformation might suppress the t to m martensitic phase transformation.
With the increase in the annealing temperature, the volume fraction of austenite phase increased and the volume fraction of ferrite phase decreased. In compliance with the addition of N, not only the volume fraction of austenite phase was increased but also the austenite structure was made larger. Volume fraction of ${\sigma}$ phase was increased by decreasing of the volume fraction of ferrite phase, with the increase in the aging time and in compliance with the addition of N. As increasing in volume fraction of ${\sigma}$ phase, tensile strength and hardness increased, while elongation and impact value decreased. Elongation slowly decreased and impact value rapidly decreased at the early stage of aging. By the added N, tensile strength, elongation, hardness and impact value was increased.

Modification of the phase gradient formulation is proposed in order to make phase retrieval less susceptible to noise. The modified formulation is derived from separation of the phase terms and the intensity modulation terms of interferograms, and subsequent differentiation to reduce the noise-induced error of the phase gradient vector. Its performance is evaluated and compared to that of the conventional formulation, and noise-robust nature is confirmed.
The potential for recriticality and sub-critical boron concentrations is analyzed during the relocation of the fuel rods in the assembly, which we call late phase of a severe accident, via coupling between MELCOR and whole-core Monte Carlo analyses by Serpent 2. The recriticality, initiated during the early phase, is found to maintain when the fuel assemblies containing intact fuel rods are submerged by the cooling water. It is also found that the effect of the negative reactivity insertion via remaining fission products in the fuel debris increases as the burnup increases. The sub-critical boron concentrations during the late phase are found to be 76~544 ppm lower than those during the early phase. Therefore, it can be concluded that the boron concentration that prevents recriticality not only during the early phase but also during the late phase is the sub-critical boron concentration during the early phase.

Estimating the phase boundary in two-phase flow is crucial for designing and optimizing industrial processes. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a promising technique for imaging phase distribution in such flows. This paper proposes using a cuckoo search (CS) optimization algorithm to estimate the phase boundary with EIT. The boundary is parameterized using the Fourier series, and the coefficients are determined by the CS algorithm. The CS algorithm iteratively seeks the phase boundary configuration by minimizing a cost function. Computer simulations and phantom experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of this method in estimating phase boundaries in two-phase flow.
