The paper presents the mechanism of secondary flows and the associated total pressure losses occurring in turbine cascades with turning angle of about 127 and 77 degree. Velocity and pressure measurements are taken in seven traverse planes through the cascade passage using a prism type five hole probe. Oil-film flow visualization is also conducted on blade and endwall surfaces. The characteristics of the limiting streamlines show that the three dimensional separation is an important flow feature of endwall and blade surfaces. The larger turning results in much stronger contribution of the secondary flows to the loss developing mechanism. A large part of the endwall loss region at downstream pressure side is found to be very thin when compared to that of the cascade inlet and suction side endwall. Evolution of overall loss starts quite early within the cascade and the rate of the loss growth is much larger in the blade of large turning angle than in the blade of small turning angle.
A three-dimensional model has been developed for pulverized coal combusters and gasifiers. Coal devolatilization, heterogeneous char oxidation, gas particle interchange, radiation, gas phase oxidation, primary and secondary stream mixing, and heat losses are considered. A finite difference method was used to solve the ordinary non-linear differential equations. The effects of primary and secondary stream flow ratio and coal particle size are investigated.

Three-dimensional flow characteristics within a high-acceleration first-stage turbine vane passage has been investigated in a newly-built vane cascade for propulsion. The result shows that there is a strong favorable pressure gradient on the vane pressure surface. On its suction surface, however, there exists not only a much stronger favorable pressure gradient than that on the pressure surface upstream of the mid-chord but also a subsequent adverse pressure gradient downstream of it. By employing two different oil-film methods with upstream coating and full-coverage coating, a four-vortex model horseshoe vortex system can be identified ahead of each leading edge in the cascade, and the separation line of inlet boundary layer flow as well as the separation line of re-attached flow is provided as well. In addition, basic flow data such as secondary flow, aerodynamic loss, and flow turning angle downstream of the cascade are obtained.

The aerodynamic losses so attributed to the endwall - usually termed secondary flow losses or secondary losses - can be as high as 30$\sim$50% of the total aerodynamic losses in a blade or stator row. Inlet guide vanes, with lower total turning and higher convergence ratios, will have smaller secondary losses, amounting to as much as 20% of total loss for an inlet stator row. These are important part for improving a turbine efficiency. The present study deals with a leading edge chamfer groove on a wing-body to investigate the vortex generation and characteristics of a horseshoe vortex with the installed height, and depth of the groove. The current study is investigated with $FLUENT^{TM}$.

Total pressure losses required to calculate the total-to-total efficiency are estimated by integrating empirical loss coefficients of four loss mechanisms along the mean-line of blades as follows; blade profile loss, secondary flow loss, end wall loss and tip clearance loss. The off-design points are obtained on the basis of Howell's off-design performance of a compressor cascade. Also, inlet-outlet air angles and camber angle are obtained from semi-empirical relations of transonic airfoils' minimum loss incidence and deviation angles. And nominal point is replaced by the design point. It is concluded that relatively simple loss models and Howell's off-design data permit us to calculate the off-design performance with satisfactory accuracy. And this method can be easily extended for off-design performance prediction of multi-stage compressors.
Steady state flow calculations are conducted for the newly-designed turbo-pump inducers to validate the performance of Tascflow code. Hydrodynamic performance is evaluated, and structures of the passage flow and leading edge recirculation are also investigated. The calculated results show good coincidence with the experimental data of the static pressure performance and velocity profiles near the leading edge. Upstream recirculation, tip leakage and vortex flow at the blade tip and near leading edge are main sources of pressure losses. Amount of pressure losses from the upstream to the leading edge corresponds to that of pressure losses through the whole blade. The total viscous losses are considerably large due to the strong secondary flow.

An analytical model was developed by Sim to estimate the two-phase damping ratio for upward two-phase flow perpendicular to horizontal tube bundles. The parameters of two-phase flow, such as void fraction and pressure loss evaluated in the model, were calculated based on existing experimental formulations. However, it is necessary to implement a few improvements in the formulations for the case of tube bundles. For the purpose of the improved formulation, we need more information about the two-phase parameters, which can be found through experimental test. An experiment is performed with a typical normal square array of cylinders subjected to the two-phase flow of air-water in the tube bundles, to calculate the two-phase Euler number and the two-phase friction multiplier. The pitch-to-diameter ratio is 1.35 and the diameter of cylinder is 18mm. Pressure loss along the flow direction in the tube bundles is measured with a pressure transducer and data acquisition system to calculate the two-phase Euler number and the two-phase friction multiplier. The void fraction model by Feenstra et al. is used to estimate the void fraction of the two-phase flow in tube bundles. The experimental results of the two phase friction multiplier and two-phase Euler number for homogeneous and non-homogeneous two-phase flows are compared and evaluated against the analytical results given by Sim's model.

This paper deals with the analysis method of regenerator characteristics for designing a vuilleumier heat pump. First, models for evaluating the reheat and the flow losses are established by the comparative study between already proposed ones. Calculations based on the second-order method are performed for the well-known schulz heat pump. Results show that operating conditions as well as design parameters significantly affect the regenerator performances. The effects of operating conditions on the reheat and the flow losses appear to be similar in trends in both the hot-warm and the cold-warm regenerators. However, the losses in the one regenerator vary oppositely to those in the other with specific design parameters such as the phase angle and the swept volume ratio being changed. Also, it is confirmed that there is an optimum aspect ratio(D/L) which minimizes total loss for each regenerator.
