This study is directed for the development of an efficient Importance Sampling Technique for system reliability analysis of bridge structures. Many methods have been proposed for structural reliability assessment such as the First-order Second-Moment Method, the Advanced Second-Moment Method, Monte Carlo Simulation, etc. The Importance Sampling Technique can be employed to obtain accurate estimates for the system reliability with reasonable computation effort. Based on the results of example analysis, it may be concluded that Importance Sampling Technique is a very effective tool for the system reliability analysis.

For the purpose of assessing structural integrity at a level of complexity and accuracy appropriate for the situation, integrity assessment methods are formulated with the following methods. One is three-tier assessment method of the revised BSI PD 6493 which considers stable crack growth effect, the others are limit load analysis which estimates the plastic collapse load and stability assessment method which considers stable crack growth of ductile material exactly using J-integral and tearing modulus. Besides, integrity assessments for center cracked panel(CCP) specimen and the circumferential through-cracked pipe are carried out and reliability analysis is accomplished by the first order reliability method which is one of the conventional reliability methods. Also the accuracy of the present method is verified by Monte Carlo method.

The reliability analysis for web frame of tanker is carried out by the probabilistic finite element method combined with the classical reliability method such as MVFOSM and AFOSM which can be used for calculating the probability of failure for the complicated structures in which the limit state equation is implicitly expressed. As random variables external load, elastic modulus, sectional moment of inertia and field stress are chosen and Parkinson's iteration algorithm in AFOSM is used for reliability analysis. By adding only the covariance data of the random variables to the input data set required for conventional finite element method, the present method can easily calculate the probability of failure at every element end as well as the covariances of structural reponses such as displacements at every element end and member forces at every element, even for the complicated ship structure.

This is the first of the two papers dealing with reliability analyses for external and internal stability of a quay wall constructed on a special foundation. A new practical reliability analysis method is proposed in this paper to evaluate the quantitative risk associated with external stability of a quay wall constructed on the deep cement mixed ground. The method can consider uncertainties in various design variables. For the risk estimation to external stability of the improved soil-quay wall, three corresponding limit state functions of sliding, overturning and bearing capacity are fully defined by introducing concept of the secondary random variable. Three representative reliability methods, MVFOSM, FORM and MCS are then applied to evaluate the failure probabilities of the three limit state functions explicitly expressed in terms of the basic and secondary random variables. From the reliability analysis results, the failure probabilities obtained from the three approaches are very close to each other, and the sliding failure mode appears to be the most critical when the earthquake loading is under consideration.

In this paper, 3-D fame design using second-orders plastic-hinge analysis accounting for lateral torsional buckling is developed. This analysis accounts for material and geometric nonlinearities of the structural system and its component members. Moreover, the problem associated with conventional second-order plastic-hinge analyses, which do not consider the degradation of the flexural strength caused by lateral torsional buckling, is overcome. Efficient ways of assessing steel frame behavior including gradual yielding associated with residual stresses and flexure, second-order effect, and geometric imperfections are presented. In this study, a model consisting of the unbraced length and cross-section shape is used to account for lateral torsional buckling. The proposed analysis is verified by the comparison of the LRFD results. A case studs shows that lateral torsional buckling is a very crucial element to be considered in second-order plastic-hinge analysis. The proposed analysis is shown to be an efficient reliable tool ready to be implemented into design practice.

A structural system reliability analysis is studied for the safety assessment of midship section. Probabilistically dominant collapse modes are generated by Element Replacement Method and Incrimental Load Method. In order to avoid generating the same modes repeatedly, it is branched at final plastic hinge. Using first and second order bound methods, system failure probability of midship section is computed and compared with deterministic load factor method to show the usefulness of the proposed method.

Presented is a study on the establishment of a method of advanced reliability analysis for the realistic analysis and design of reinforced concrete(RC) structures. Considerable variabilities exist in concrete structures due to random nature of concrete materials and member dimensions. The present study analyzes first the uncertainties in concrete, reinforcements and member dimensions and then a method is proposed to determine the probability uncertainties of basic variables. The limit state equations are also proposed for the RC members with axial compression and bending and RC footings. The advanced invariant second-moment method is applied to analyze those structures. The present study provides an important base for realistic reliability analysis of RC structures.
This study proposes a Load Factors-based Analysis Model of Optimum Reliability for the High way bridge, which is most common type of structural design, and also proposes the theoretical bases of optimum nominal safety factors as well as optimum load and resistance factors based on the expected total cost minimization. Major 2nd moment reliability analysis and design theories including both MFOSM(Mean First Order 2nd Moment) Methods and AFOSM(Advanced First Order 2nd Moment) Methods are summarized and compared, and it has been found that Lind-Hasofer's approximate and an approximate Log-normal type reliability for mula are well suited for the proposed optimum reliability study.
For the purpose of efficiently calculating the design sensitivity and the reliability for the complicated structures in which the structural responses or limit state functions are given by implicit form, the probabilistic finite element method is introduced to formulate the deterministic design sensitivity analysis method and incorporated with the second moment reliability methods such as MVFOSM, AFOSM and SORM. Also, the probabilistic design sensitivity analysis method needed in the reliability-based design is proposed. As numerical examples, two thin plates are analyzed for the cases of plane stress and plate bending. The initial yielding is defined as failure criterion, and applied loads, yield stress, plate thickness, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio are treated as random variables. It is found that the response variances and the failure probabilities calculated by the proposed PFEM-based reliability method show good agreement with those by Monte Carlo simulation. The probabilistic design sensitivity evaluates explicitly the contribution of each random variable to probability of failure. Further, the design change can be evaluated without any difficulty, and their effect on reliability can be estimated quickly with high accuracy.

This paper is concerned with comparison of the first-order reliability methods applied to the assessment of structural safety. For convenience the reliability methods are divided into two categories : the One can explicitly consider the effects of uncertainties in material and geometric variables on those of load effects, say stresses and displacement in the structural analysis procedure and the other one does not. The first method is commonly termed as the stochastic finite element method(SFEM) or probabilistic finite element method(PFEM) and the second method is termed heroin as the ordinary reliability method to distinct it from the stochastic finite element method in which the structural analysis is carried out just once and the load effects are directly input into the reliability analysis procedure. This is based on the reasonable assumption that the level of uncertainties of load effects is the same as those of load itself. In this paper the above two different reliability method have been applied to the safety assessment of plane frame structures and compared thier results from the view point of their efficiency and usefulness. As lear as results of the present structure models are concerned, it can be said that the ordinary reliability method can give reasonable results when the uncertainties of material and geometric variables are comparatively small, say when less than about 15% and the stochastic finite element method is desired to be applied to the structure in which the COV's are comparatively great, say when greater than about 15%.
