  • This paper deals with the analysis method of regenerator characteristics for designing a vuilleumier heat pump. First, models for evaluating the reheat and the flow losses are established by the comparative study between already proposed ones. Calculations based on the second-order method are performed for the well-known schulz heat pump. Results show that operating conditions as well as design parameters significantly affect the regenerator performances. The effects of operating conditions on the reheat and the flow losses appear to be similar in trends in both the hot-warm and the cold-warm regenerators. However, the losses in the one regenerator vary oppositely to those in the other with specific design parameters such as the phase angle and the swept volume ratio being changed. Also, it is confirmed that there is an optimum aspect ratio(D/L) which minimizes total loss for each regenerator.

  • The advantages of the SITVC (Secondary Injection for Thrust Vector Control) technique over mechanical thrust vectoring systems include a reduction in both the nozzle weight and complexity due to the elimination of the mechanical actuators that are used in conventional vectoring. The optimal operating conditions of SITVC were investigated using in-house developed compressible flow analysis codes. Numerical experiments were used to examine the impact of the thrust vector direction with a variety of injection positions, mass flow rates, and injection angles on the two-dimensional expansion cone of a supersonic nozzle. The computational results showed that the optimal position of the secondary injection, with the maximum deviation angle and side thrust, was where the oblique shock generated by the secondary injection reached the end of the nozzle exit.

  • In this paper, Using third-order system of the PLL we analyze the aspect of flicker noise appearing troubles In the low frequency band. Since i. Is difficult to analyze mathematically flirter noise In the third-order system of the PLL, introducing the concept of pseudo-damping factor using the optimized second-filter makes an ease of the access of the flicker-noise variance. we'll show a numerical formula of flicker variance in the third-order system of the PLL which is compared with that of 1/f-noise variance in the second-order system of the PLL.

  • In this paper, we report the experimental and numerical results on spin-up flows in a rectangular container of the aspect ratio 2. The Ekman pumping models used in the numerical study are of 1st- and 2nd- order. We also investigate flows obtained without any pumping model. In the experiment, the classical PIV method is used. It is shown that the results given by the 1st-order and 2nd-order models are in good agreement with the experimental result, whereas the non-pumping model shows a significant discrepancy.

  • The chine of high speed vessels does not only play a role in changing position when planing but also helps balancing the hull. It also has a great influence on resistance performance. However, designing a chine requires a lot of experience because it is influenced by various factors such as displacement, transom shape, draft and width. Such a design is not based on an empirical formula, but the purpose of this study is to provide basic guidelines regarding the shape of chine through calculation. This design was developed using Yacht-one, a commercial design program, and analysis was performed using Star-CCM+, also a commercial analysis program. Analysis of the hull selected in this study was carried out by Dynamic Fluid Body Interaction (DFBI) method. Analysis of the chine was carried out at chine angles of 15, 16, 17, and 19degrees, at a speed of 30knots. The result indicated that the highest trim occurred at 16 degrees among the four chine angles considered, and the highest heave occurred at 15degree. In terms of resistance performance, minimum resistance was observed at 16 degrees. Consequently, for minimum ship resistance, it is necessary to complete calculations in accordance with the chine angles, ${\pm}2$ degrees from the initial chine angle, which should be carried out a the design stage.

  • The structural analysis for the secondary lining of tunnels is generally performed by a frame analysis model. This model requires a ground loosening load estimated by some empirical methods, but the load is likely to be subjective and too large. The ground load acting on the secondary lining is due to the loss of the supporting function of the first support members such as shotcrete and rockbolts. Therefore, the equilibrium condition of the ground and the first support members should be considered to estimate the ground load acting on the secondary lining. Ground-lining interaction model, shortly GLI model, is developed on the basis of the concept that the secondary lining supports the ground deformation triggered by the loss of the support capacity of the first support members. Accordingly, the GLI model can take into account the ground load reflecting effectively not only the complex ground conditions but the installed conditions of the first support members. The load acting on the secondary lining besides the ground load includes the groundwater pressure and earthquake load. For the structural reinforcement of the secondary lining based on the ultimate strength design method, the factored load and various load combination should be considered. Since the GLI model has difficulty in dealing with the factored load, introduced in this study is the superposition principle in which the section moment and force of the secondary lining estimated for individual loads are multiplied by the load factors. Finally, the design method of the secondary lining using the GLI model is applied to the case of a shallow subway tunnel.

  • Generally design of frame structures composed of beam-column member is accomplished by stability evaluation of each member considering the effective buckling length. This study selects a member of the smallest non-dimension slenderness ratio using the buckling eigenvalue calculated by the elastic buckling eigen-value analysis and axial force of the each member, and decides the initial deflection quantity reflected geometric and material nonlinearities from a suggested equation on the base of standard strength curve of Korea Bridge Design Code. Second-order elastic analysis applying the initial deflection is executed and the stability of each member is evaluated and decides ultimate strength. Through examples of eight-stories and four-stories plane frame structures, the evaluation of the stability is compared with the existing method and ultimate strength of the suggested method is compared with ultimate strength by the nonlinear inelastic analysis. Through these procedures, the increasing of effective buckling length by elastic buckling eigenvalue analysis is prevented from a new design method that considers initial imperfections. And the validity of this method is proved.

  • Geomrtric nonlinearity of axially and laterally loaded reinforced concrete slender columns has been generally considered by use of second order analysis such as $P-{\Delta}$ method. Complex procedure in second order analysis may not be a difficult problem with computer aid, however it has been seldom used in design offices because of the need of carefully decided input data. In lieu of second order analyses, the Korean and the American concrete codes have adopted the moment magnifier method. It is known, however, that this method results in too conservative design in some cases. Accuracy of the moment magnifier method to the experimentally obtained data has been reviewed and an improved method has been proposed for better result.

  • This study concentrates on the upwind schemes for convergence acceleration of the multigrid method for the Navier-Stokes equations. Comparative study of the upwind schemes in the Fourier space has been performed to identify why the second-order upwind scheme with enlarged stencil can be preconditioned better than the classical second-order upwind scheme. The full-coarsening multigrid method with implicit preconditioned multistage scheme has been implemented for verification of analysis. Numerical simulations on the inviscid and turbulent flows with the Spalart-Allmaras turbulent model have been performed. The results showed consistent trend with the analysis.
