Purpose: This research aimed to identify levels of nurses' perception and practice of fluid intake and output (I & O) measurement and to explore the relationship between perception and practice of it. Methods: Using a cross-sectional survey design, 195 nurses who practiced fluid I & O measurement were recruited from a general hospital. Nurses who agreed to participate in this study completed a structured study questionnaire to assess their levels of perception and practice of fluid I & O measurement. Results: A level of perception of I & O measurement was high (3.46 points out of 5), and scores for 3 subdomains of I & O (importance, accuracy, and efficacy) were evenly high. The level of practice of I & O was fairly high (3.76 points out of 5). Perception and practice of I & O were highly correlated (r=.73, p<.001). Conclusion: Nurses seem to have higher levels of perception and do practice fluid I & O measurement correctly. In order to have reliable and valid I & O measures, nurses need to have continuous education on I & O measurement based on clinical guideline to utilize it as an invaluable clinical instrument.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of an exercise program developed for women of old-old age in senior citizen halls on the basis of Pender's health promotion model. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used in this study. The experimental group participated in the exercise program for 60 minutes per day, three times a week for 12 weeks. Data were analyzed by SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: After the program, there were significant differences in perceived barriers to exercise, exercise self-efficacy, exercise social support, exercise behavior, physical fitness, perceived health status, and depression between two groups. However, no significant difference was observed in the perceived benefits to exercise between two groups. Conclusion: The exercise program of this study was useful to enhance exercise self-efficacy, exercise social support, exercise behavior, physical fitness, and perceived health status and to reduce the perceived barriers to exercise and depression of women of old-old age. Therefore, we recommend this exercise program for the elderly care.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of uncertainty, physiological risk factors, self-efficacy, and self-management among stroke patients and to identify factors influencing their self-management. Methods: A descriptive correlational design was used for this study. A convenience sample of 149 patients with stroke were enrolled at C national university hospital from February to April in 2016. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and electronic medical record. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression analysis with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: There were significant negative correlations between uncertainty and self-efficacy (r=-.56, p<.001); between uncertainty and self-management (r=-.56, p<.001); and between total cholesterol and self-management (r=-.23, p=.005). There were significant positive correlations between self-efficacy and self-management (r=.78, p<.001); between uncertainty and total cholesterol (r=.24, p=.003). The significant factors influencing self-management were uncertainty and self-efficacy. Theses variables explained 62.7% of the variance in self-management. Conclusion: The results suggest that intervention programs to reduce the level of uncertainty and to increase the level of self-efficacy among patients would improve the self-management of stroke patients.
Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the mediating effect of nutritional status in the relationship between symptom experience and functional status among in patients with lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: Subject (N=139) were lung cancer patients visiting the D hospital in B city. Data collection was conducted from May 2016 to February 2017. Seven nutritional status measurement tools, 22 symptom experience tools, and 15 EORTC QLQ-C30 functional scales were used to measure nutritional, symptom, and functional levels. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS / WIN 21.0 using descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation, 3-step regression analysis of Baron and Kenny, and Sobel test. Results: There was a significant positive correlation between symptom experience and nutritional status, a significant negative correlation between symptom experience and functional status, and significant negative correlation between nutritional status and functional status. Symptom experience had direct effect and indirect effects on functional status through nutritional status. Conclusion: For enhancing functional status in lung cancer patients, it is necessary to develop nursing intervention programs to palliate symptoms and improve nutritional status.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the utilization of and satisfaction with the smart bedside station (SBS) system among users in a hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design was used. The participants were 190 patients, 186 family caregivers, and 154 nurses in a hospital. Results: Around 78.1% of patients or family caregivers used the SBS system at least once during their hospital stay. The commonly used items on the SBS system menu were "lab findings", "hospital cost", "today's medication", and the "alarm message". Satisfaction with the SBS system of patients and family caregivers were significantly higher than those of nurses (F=39.88, p<.001). Conclusion: A patient-centered SBS system was a useful system that could increase patient satisfaction and comfort. More specific and technical service contents reflecting the current healthcare system should be added.
Purpose: This study aimed to explore the influences of sense of ethics and attitude toward patient safety in confidence in patient safety in nursing students. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 198 students who had clinical practices in two nursing schools. Sense of ethics, attitude and confidence about patient safety were measured by a questionnaire. Data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 19.0 using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results: There were significant differences in satisfaction with nursing major by grade. There were significant positive correlations among sense of ethics, attitude toward patient safety, confidence in patient safety, view on patient's safety, and satisfaction with nursing major. Confidence in patient safety was associated with sense of ethics, attitude toward patient safety, and view on patient's safety, with 37.6% of the variance. Conclusion: The findings suggest that we need to develop curriculums for undergraduate students to improve their sense of ethics and patient safety. Further research is needed to examine educational needs on patient safety in nursing students.
Purpose: This study was conducted to extract international classification of functioning, disability, and health (ICF) core sets for measuring functional status in acute stroke patients, and to evaluate clinical applicability of the core sets. Methods: A set of 22 ICF items on functional status in acute stroke patients were extracted from the Korean general ICF core sets and ICF core sets for stroke patients. The extracted ICF functional items were assessed at the time of admission and discharge among 100 stroke patients who were admitted in a university hospital. Results: Comparing to functional status at admission of acute stroke patients, the overall functional status at discharge was improved. However, functions on defecation, skin protection, and relationship with immediate family at the time of discharge were not significantly changed. Conclusion: The set of ICF functional items identified in this study may be reliable and valid to assess acute stoke patients' body functions, activities and participation and environmental factors in the holistic and comprehensive nursing context. Nursing interventions on bowel elimination and skin protection for acute stroke patients need to be developed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the effects of the Tai Chi exercise on metabolic syndrome and health-related quality of life in middle-aged women. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used. Subjects were sixty middle-aged women with metabolic syndrome. All of the subjects were met the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III). The subjects were divided into the experiment group (n=33) trained the Tai Chi for 12 weeks and the control group (n=27). Metabolic syndrome risk factors including blood pressure, waist circumference, glucose, triglyceride (TG), and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were measured before and after the 12-week period. Euro Quality of Life Questionnaire 5-Dimensional Classification (EQ-5D) was used to evaluate the health-related quality of life. Results: The experiment group showed significant decreases in diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference, glucose, and TG; and increase in HDL-C compared to the control group. For the health-related quality of life evaluation, the experiment group showed significant improvement more than the control group. Conclusion: The Tai Chi exercise may be effective intervention in preventing cardiovascular disease caused by metabolic syndrome in middle-aged women.
Purpose: To investigate the effects of self-management course in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. Method: Forty-nine subjects were sampled according to research criteria, and divided into two groups: 24 of the experimental group and 25 of control group. To the experimental group, self-management course which developed by the investigators was applied for 6 weeks, each session adopted for two hours per week and additional 30-minutes exercise was carried out two times a week. Result: After participating the self-management course in experimental group, 1) the degree of pain was significantly decreased 2) significant improvement in the flexibility of lumbar spine, 3) uncertainty was significantly decreased. 4) Self-efficacy was not changed between the two groups after self-management course. Conclusions: These findings indicate that the self-management course could be effective in improving the flexibility of lumbar spine and decreasing pain, and uncertainty in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.
This study was done to Identify the relations between psychosocial factors and symptoms of patient with rheumatoid arthritis. Its subjects were 150 outpatients selected at H. Rheumatism clinic from July to August in 1998. Data were collected by means of questionnaires using interview. Those data were analyzed by Frequency, t-test, ANOVA, pearson's correlation using SPSS window 8.0. The results were as follows : 1) The level of family support was relatively high and the level of self-efficacy and performance of daily living activities were average. Among their symptoms, fatigue and pain were frequent problems. 2) Family support was different by educational level, self-efficacy and physical, psychological symptoms were different by performance of regular exercise. 3) The family support was inversely related to physical symptoms especially ADL, while it was not related to psychological symptoms except a reverse correlation between depression and anxiety, and family support. Self-efficacy held a reverse correlation with both physical and psychological symptoms. And there was a close relationship between symptoms. In conclusion it was found that the promotion of family support, self-efficacy and exercise-performance holds a key post in reducing symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
