Purpose: This study was to conducted to investigate the prevalence and related factors of metabolic syndrome (MS) among Korean adults. Methods: We used secondary data of the sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2013 to 2015 and selected 4,939 adults 20 to 64 years old. General characteristics and health-related characteristics were included as related factors for analysis. Chi-square tests were used to compare the prevalence of MS between one-person and multiple-person households, while a multiple logistic regression model was used to identify factors to MS among one-person and multiple-person households. Results: MS of one-person households (26.4%) were significantly higher (${\chi}^2=7.81$, p=.017) than multiple-households (19.5%). Risk factors for MS were identified as walking, flexibility exercises, reading nutrition labels, and sleep hours in one-person households; and flexibility exercises and dietary control among multiple-person households using multiple logistic regression. Conclusion: Specialized health policies and programs should be provided to reduce MS prevalence in one-person households in consideration of risk factors revealed in this study.
Recently, one-person households have surpassed nuclear families. One-person households are expected to have many problems with health due to an irregular life style and a tendency to be more isolated from society. In addition, we need to divide the generations and survey each generation due to differences in one-person household factors and characteristics as well as the unique physical conditions of each generation. Therefore, based on the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this survey examined health behavior differences between one-person households and non-one-person households according to generation (respectively) as well as studied how one-person households and health behavior influence subjective health conditions. The major result of this survey is as follows. First, one-person households reveal a higher rate in the negative health behavior than non-one-person households. Second, the physical activity of all households reveals a high rate of non-activity. Third, health scores of one-person households are lower than that of non-one-person households; consequently, the analysis of health scores for one-person households and non-one-person households indicated that the middle age health scores for one-person households have been lowest in generations. Fourth, the factors that influence subjective health conditions indicated that one-person household and health behavior has meaningful influence; in addition, the subjective health condition of one-person households are lower than non-one-person households under controlled health behavior.
Households have experienced economic instability since Korea economic crisis in 1997. This study attempts to explore the financial management behavior by the types of economic instability classified considering the two aspects of the employment and the income instability of the households. The specific objectives of this study are : 1) to classify households’economic instability in terms of employment and income instability. 2) to examine whether the financial management behavior is different between households experiencing the different types of the economic instability. The sample consisted of 792 married women living in Seoul. The statistical methods used for analysis included Reliability, Frequencies, Percent, Mean, Standard Deviation, Analysis of Covariance, one-way Anova, DMR-test. The major results can be summarized as following : 1) The economic instability experienced by houeholds can be classified into the 4 types employment-income instability, employment instability income stability, employment stability$.$income instability, and employment$.$income stability. 2) There are statistically significant differences in the levels of financial management behavior between households having the different types of economoc instability. The results of this study could be needed for development of the employment policies and the financial education programs.
The effects of social distancing measures on income distributions and aggregate variables are examined with an off-the-shelf heterogeneous-agent incomplete-market model. The model shows that social distancing measures, which limit households' labor supply, can decrease the labor supply of low-income households who hold insufficient assets and need income the most given their borrowing constraints. Social distancing measures can therefore exacerbate income inequality by lowering the incomes of the poor. An equilibrium interest rate can fall when the social distancing shock is expected to be persistent because households save more to prepare for rising consumption volatility given the possibility of binding to the labor supply constraint over time. When the shock is expected to be transitory, in contrast, the interest rate can rise upon the arrival of the shock because constrained households choose to borrow more to smooth consumption given the expectation that the shock will fade away. The model also shows that social distancing shocks, which diminish households' consumption demand, can decrease households' incomes evenly for every income quantile, having a limited impact on income inequality.
Purpose: This study was to identify health behavior, health service use, and health related quality of life of adult women in one-person and multi-person households. Methods: It was used data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VII-2017). Subjects were 2,522 women with age of 19 to 64 years in 2017. Complex sampling design and data analysis were performed using SPSS 20.1. Results: Women in one-person households had higher rates of alcohol drinking (${\chi}^2=13.77$, p=.003), smoking (${\chi}^2=16.07$, p=.001), unmet medical care (${\chi}^2=8.77$, p=.004) and non-practice of cancer screening (${\chi}^2=13.77$, p=.003) compared to women in multi-person households. Health-related quality of life was also lower for women in one-person households (t=-2.46, p=.015). Factors affecting health-related quality of life in one-person households were household income, job status, and unmet dental care, having 32.4% explanatory power. One-person household women with low incomes, no jobs, and unmet dental care showed low health-related quality of life. In comparison, factors affecting health-related quality of life of women in multi-person household women were age, education level, unmet medical care, and unmet dental care, having 10.4% explaining power. Women in multi-person households with age of 60-64, low education level, unmet medical care, and unmet dental care showed low health-related quality of life. Conclusion: Health promotion strategies should be developed based on unique understanding of social, economic, and health of adult women in one-person and multi-person households.
The purpose of this study was to investigate housing characteristics of young renter households by locations using licensed microdata of the 2012 Korea Housing Survey. There were 1,020,216 renter households (weighted count) headed by persons between 20 and 34 years of age, and their housing characteristics were compared statistically across their residential locations (Capital Region, metropolitan cities, other areas). Major findings are as follows: (1) Capital Region young renters had the worst housing quality to have the greatest proportion of households living in units failed to meet national minimum housing standards, and/or in basement or semi-basement units; (2) Capital Region young renters had the greatest proportion of households that had housing cost burdens; and (3) 37.3% of young renter households in metropolitan areas and 33.5% in Capital Region were found to receive family support in order to afford current rental costs.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the financial status of single mother households by financial ratios. Data was drawn from Labor Panel Survey Data in 1999, and 198 single mother households were selected. Major findings were as follows: 1) The levels of after-tax income, income per person, expenditure, expenditure per person, asset, pure asset, and debt of single mother households were lower than their counter-parts. 2) All financial ratios showed that both financial security and financial growth of single mother households were lower than their counter-parts. Especially, 22% of single mother households had the lower level of income that the lowest cost of living.
The objectives of this study were to classify the types of elderly households and to compare the characteristics of their dietary lifestyle. Panel data surveyed by Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) for Food Purchase Attitudes over three years (2019 - 2021) were utilized for the analysis. Through a factor analysis, five common factors were extracted out of 19 basic variables related to dietary style, which indicate two kinds of consumer competency index (safe diet, traditional diet) and three kinds of purchase frequency (healthy food, meat & fish, fresh seafood). Applying the cluster analysis method, by using socioeconomic variables along the five common factors, elderly households aged 60 or older were grouped into four types. As a result, Type 1 elderly households accounted for 50.8%, Type 2 for 16.2%, Type 3 for 27.8%, and Type 4 for 5.2% out of all 870 elderly households. Type 1 is characterized as a low-income vulnerable class with a poor diet, Type 2 as a middle-income class with a healthy food-oriented diet, whereas Type 3 was classified as a middle-income class with a meat-oriented diet, and Type 4 as a high-income class with diverse dietary culture. It is necessary to expand the agri-food voucher pilot project to the entire country and also increase the monthly subsidy for the Type 1 elderly households. Implementing community kitchen projects for elderly single-person households, promoting senior internships by providing incentives to companies that employ retirees, the provision of education by local governments on a safe and balanced diet for Types 2 and 3, and the promotion of an elderly-friendly social environment are also recommended.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the economic lives of single households with the age of 30 through less than 50. The economic life was examined in three aspects; income, assets, and consumption expenditures and patterns. One hundred sixty single households were surveyed, with questionnaires for 15days from April 1 to April 15 of 2002, and analyzed with descriptive statistics. The results were as follows: about 30.8% of total single households in the sample were in the income group of 1,500,000 thought less than 2,000,000 won. The size of income for the 30's was less than that for the 40's. Compared with male single households, female single households were more in both low and high levels of income. The saving rate tended more or less to be low. The more the age, the higher the saving rate. As for debt, the 40's single households, male single households, high school single households (compared to the 30's single households, female single households, university and graduate single households, respectively) were relatively higher. In general, the single households tended to have debts due to preparation for housing, credit over use. The assets tended to be managed by themselves. The economic preparation for the old life was done by banking system rather than insurance. The average monthly living costs was higher in the age of the 40's single than the age of the 30's single.
