  • The surface wave data obtained in a tidal flat located in the sw coast of the Korean Peninsula were used to analyse the shear wave velocity structure of the area. First, the phase velocity dispersion curves were obtained by the tau-p stacking method and the group velocity dispersion curves by a wavelet transform method and the Multiple Filtering Technique by Dziewonski. The phase velocity dispersion curves exhibited bigger errors than the group velocity curves. The results showed that the wavelet transform method was more effective in separating the fundamental and the 1st higher mode group velocity curves than the Multiple Filtering Technique. Combined use of the fundamental and the 1st higher mode group velocity dispersion curves in the inversion for the shear wave velocity structure gave better spatial resolution compared when the fundamental mode group velocity was used alone. This study indicates that the group velocity dispersion curves can be used in the inversion of Rayleigh waves for the shear wave velocity structure, especially effectively with the higher mode group velocity curves together.

  • In this study, the researchers compared the S-wave velocity structures obtained by two kinds of dispersion curves: phase and group dispersions from a tidal flat located in the SW coast of the Korean peninsula. The ${\tau}-p$ stacking method was used for the phase velocity and two different methods (multiple filtering technique: MFT and continuous wavelet transform: CWT) for the phase velocity. It was difficult to separate higher modes from the fundamental mode phase velocities using the ${\tau}-p$ method, whereas the separation of different modes of group velocity were easily achieved by both MFT and CWT. Of the two methods, CWT was found to be more efficient than MFT. The spatial resolutions for the inversion results of the fundamental mode for both phase and group velocities were good for only a very shallow depth of ${\sim}1.5m$. On the other hand, the spatial resolutions were good up to ${\sim}4m$ when both the fundamental and the 1st higher mode poop velocities obtained by CWT were used for S-wave inversion. This implies that the 1st higher mode Rayleigh waves contain more information on the S-wave velocity in deeper subsurface. The researchers applied the CWT method to obtain the fundamental and the 1st higher mode poop velocities of the S-wave velocity structure of a tidal flat located in SW coast of the Korean peninsula. Thea the S-wave velocity structures were compared with the borehole description of the study area.

  • In the Korean seas, Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Thermal ronts (TF) were analyzed temporally and spatially during 8 years from 1993 to 2000 using NOAA/AVHRR MCSST. In the application of EOF analysis for SST, the variance of the 1st mode was 97.6%. Temporal components showed annual variations, and spatial components showed that where it is closer to continents, the SST variations are higher. Temporal components of the 2nd mode presented higher values of 1993, 94 and 95 than those of other years. Although these phenomena were not remarkable, they could be considered ELNI . NO effects to the Korean seas as the time was when ELNI . NO occurred. The Sobel Edge Detection Method (SEDM) delineated four fronts: the Subpolar Front (SPF) separating the northern and southern parts of the East Sea; the Kuroshio Front (KF) in the East China Sea, the South Sea Coastal Front (SSCF) in the South Sea, and the Tidal Front (TDF) in the West Sea. TF generally occurred over steep bathymetry slopes, and spatial components of the 1st mode in SST were bounded within these frontal areas. EOF analysis of SST gradient values revealed the temporal and spatial variations of the TF. The SPF and SSCF were most intense in March and October; the KF was most significant in March and May.

  • This paper presents a scheme to actively control the vertical vibration of aerial vehicles due to the disturbances such as the sudden change of derricking angle and the external forces by using a small plunger attached to the derricking cylinder. Simulations show that the 1st mode vibration is suppressed efficiently by the proposed method without exciting the higher modes' vibration. Detailed mathematical model of the aerial vehicle, its vibration characteristics, detection method of the 1st mode vibration and the controller design based on the lag-element and the disturbance observer are described.

  • In the Korean seas, Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Thermal Fronts (TF) were analyzed temporally and spatially during 8 years from 1993 to 2000 using NOAA/AVHRR MCSST As the result of EOF method applying SST, the variance of the 1st mode was 97.6%. It is suitable to explain SST conditions in the whole Korean seas. Time coefficients were shown annual variations and spatial distributions were shown the closer to the continent the higher SST variations like as annual amplitudes. The 2nd mode presented higher time coefficients of 1993, 94, and 95 than those of other years. Although the influence is a little, that tan explain EININO effort to the Korean seas. TF were detected by Sobel Edge Detection Method using gradient of SST. Consequently, TF were divided into 4 fronts; the Subpolar Front (SPF) dividing into the north and south part of the East sea , the Kuroshio Front (KF) in the East China Sea (ESC), the South Sea Coastal Front (SSCF) in the South sea, and the Tidal Front in the West sea. TF located in steep slope of submarine topography. The distributions of 1st mode in SST were bounded in the same place, and these results should be considered to influence of seasonal variations. To discover temporal and spatial variations of TF, SST gradient values were analyzed by EOF. The time coefficients fo the 1st mode (variance : 64.55%) showed distinctive annual variations and SPF, KF, and SSCF was significantly appeared in March. the spatial distributions of the 2nd mode showed contrast distribution, as SPF and SSCF had strong'-'value, where KF had strong'+'value. The time of'+'and'-'value was May and October, respectively. Time coefficients of the 3rd mode had 2 peaks per year and showed definite seasonal variations. SPF represented striking'+'value which time was March and October. That was result reflected time of the 1st and 2nd mode. We can suggest specific temporal and spatial variations of TF using EOF.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the stress and the coping strategies in breast cancer patients and their spouses. Methods: The stress level was measured by the Stress Questionnaire of Andersson & Albertsson (2000). The coping strategies were measured by the modified Lazarus & Folkman's Ways of Coping Questionnaire. The data were collected by a survey sampling 49 couples from one hospital in Seoul. The data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA and paired t-test. Results: There was no significant differences between the stress level of breast cancer patients and their spouses. The problem-focused coping of breast cancer patients was significant higher than their spouses. The cancer patients and their spouses used problem-focused coping mode more than emotion-focused coping mode. In the problem-focused coping mode, breast cancer patients used two coping strategies - 'seeking information' and 'cognitive reconstruction' - significantly more than their spouses. In emotion-focused coping mode, the breast cancer patients used one coping strategy, 'emotional expression', significantly more than the their spouses. Conclusion: Further study needs to attempt to develop nursing interventions that could improve positive coping strategies.

  • The Thomsen-Haskell method was used to determine sensitivities of the Rayleigh-wave phase velocities and spectral amplitude of vertical ground motion to insertion of a single velocity-anomaly layer into overburden underlain by a basement. The reference model comprised a 9-m thick overburden with shear-wave velocity (${\nu}_s$ of 300 m/s above a half-space with ${\nu}_s$ = 1000 m/s. The inserted layer, with a velocity of 150, 225, 375, or 450 m/s and a thickness of 1, 2, or 3 m, was placed at depths increasing from the surface in increments of 1 m. Phase velocities were computed for frequencies of 4 to 30 Hz. For inserted layer models, we placed an anomalous layer with thickness of 1 ~ 3 m, shear-wave velocity of 150 ~ 450 m/s, and at depths of 0 ~ 8 m in the overburden. The frequency range of 8 ~ 20 Hz were the most sensitive to the difference of $C_R$ between the inserted and reference models (${\Delta}C_R$) for h = 1 m and the frequency range got wide as h increased. For all of the models, the spectral amplitudes of the fundamental mode exceeded those of the $1^{st}$-higher mode except at frequencies just above the low-frequency cutoff of the $1^{st}$-higher mode.

  • The 1st stage bucket of the 170MW simple cycle gas turbine is one of the components that is normally run in exposed state at the highest thermally stressful environment while the turbine is operating. After certain period operation, various type of damages are easily found and the damages are identified as due to the turbine operating mode of which the demand of the electricity power is very peaking and cyclic. Since this trend is more evident at some part of power plants in Korea and it has caused higher scrap rate of the bucket at the first repair interval than other country. Therefore, demand for the higher capability and alternative technologies which allow salvaging more buckets and preventing from severe damages is always high. In this study, a review and estimation of the repair technologies for the past 5 years to present have been conducted and show results.

  • This research investigates the effects of sonication mode, reaction temperature and volume on sonolysis of 1,4-dioxane in order to increase the degradation efficiency and kinetics. The degradation efficiency in case with pulse mode was about 10 % higher than that in case with continuous mode. The degradation profiles in both cases, which were performed without the control of reaction temperature and in 1000 mL, were composed of three steps. However, 1,4-D was mainly degraded in the initiation step as the first portion and the acceleration step as the second portion. The initial step agreed with zero-order expression well, while the acceleration step could be fitted with pseudo 1st-order expression. The kinetic model in case with $5^{\circ}C$ and 300 mL conformed to pseudo 1st-order, while that in cases with $10^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$ agreed with zero-order expression. The degradation efficiency and profile of 1,4-D in the experiment with $20^{\circ}C$ and 300 mL was higher and simpler than that in case with $20^{\circ}C$ and 1000 mL. The reaction temperature and volume influence bubble intensity, which was produced in sonication. The increase of bubble intensity induced to augment the production of OH radical in sonication.
