PURPOSES : The use of environmentally friendly construction methods has been recently encouraged to reduce fuel consumption and the effects of global warming. For this purpose, the roller compacted concrete pavement (RCCP) construction method has been developed. RCCP is more environmentally friendly and economically efficient than general concrete by reducing the amount of CO2 generated through the application of a smaller amount of cement. RCCP has a number of advantages such as an easy construction method, low cost, high structural hydration performance, and aggregate interlocking. However, mix design standards and construction guidelines of RCCP are required for domestic application. In addition, a study on aggregate selection, which has an effect on the characteristics of RCCP, is necessary owing to a limited number of researches. Thus, the aggregate effect on the performance of RCCP in securing the required strength and workability was evaluated in consideration of domestic construction. METHODS : Sand and coarse aggregates of both 19mm and 13mm in maximum size were used in this study. Four types of aggregate gradations (s/a = 30%, 58%, and 70% for the sand and coarse aggregate of 19mm in maximum size, and s/a = 50% for a combination of the three types of aggregates) were set up to investigate the effects of the PCA band on the RCC characteristics. The conditions of s/a = 30% and 70% were evaluated to check the gradation effect outside of the recommended band. The conditions of s/a = 58% and 50% were used because they are the optimum combination of the two and three types of aggregates, respectively. RCCP gradation band was suggested gradation with a proper construction method of RCCP by synthetically comparing and analyzing the correlation of optimum water content, maximum dry density, and strength of requirements through its consistency and compaction test. RESULTS : The lower and upper limit lines are insufficient to secure a relatively strong development and workability compared to an aggregate gradation in the RCCP gradation band region. On the other hand, the line in the RCCP gradation band and the 0.45 power curve in the RCCP gradation band region were satisfactory, ensuring the required strength and workability. CONCLUSIONS : The suitable aggregate gradation on RCCP process should meet the RCCP gradation band area; however, fine particles passing through a #60 sieve do not need to be within the recommended gradation band because the influence of this region on such fine particles is small.
In this study, the infiltration quantity of fine-grained soil into coarse-grained soil or aggregate for methods to accelerate consolidation drainage is checked by laboratory tests under various conditions and those characteristics on infiltration are examined closely. Irrespectively of pressures to fine-grained soil corresponding to stresses in a soil mass or moisture contents of fine-grained soil, fine-grained soil does not infiltrate into standard sand and marine sand, so it is verified that drain-resistance into sand mass of drainage / pile does not occur entirely and its shear strength would increase highly by water compaction. It is known that the infiltration depth of fine-grained soil into aggregate increases according that those size is larger in case of aggregates and it increases according that the pressure or the moisture contents is higher in case of same size aggregate. It is thought that drain-resistance into aggregate mass of drainage / pile would occurs by infiltrated fine-grained soil in advance though the infiltration depth of fine-grained soi of lower moisture content than liquid limit into 13 mm aggregate is low quietly. So gravel drain method or gravel compaction pile method, etc. using aggregate of gravels or crushed stones, etc. larger than sand particle size should be not applied in very soft fine-grained soil mass of higher natural moisture contents than liquid limit, and it is thought that its applying is not nearly efficient also in soft fine-grained soil mass of lower natural moisture contents than liquid limit.

This paper investigates the effect of inclusion of glass fibers on mechanical and fracture properties of binary blend geopolymer concrete produced by using fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag. To study the effect of glass fibers, the mix design parameters like binder content, alkaline solution/binder ratio, sodium hydroxide concentration and aggregate grading were kept constant. Four different volume fractions (0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.4%) and two different lengths (6 mm, 13 mm) of glass fibers were considered in the present study. Three different notch-depth ratios (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) were considered for determining the fracture properties. The test results indicated that the addition of glass fibers improved the flexural strength, split tensile strength, fracture energy, critical stress intensity factor and critical crack mouth opening displacement of geopolymer concrete. 13 mm fibers are found to be more effective than 6 mm fibers and the optimum dosage of glass fibers was found to be 0.3% (by volume of concrete). The study shows the enormous potential of glass fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete in structural applications.

The exposed aggregate PCC(EAP) pavements have been successfully used in Europe and Japan as low-noise pavements. Coarse aggregate are exposed on the pavement surface texture of EAP by removing mortar of surface. The pavement surface texture should maintain not only low-noise characteristic but also adequate skid resistance level during the performance period. Skid resistance decreased with wearing and polishing of tire and pavement surface due to the repetition of tire-pavement contact. Since the tires mainly contact the exposed coarse aggregate, the shape and rock type of coarse aggregate significantly influence wearing and polishing of EAP pavements. The test for resistance to abrasion coarse aggregate by use of the Los Angeles machine(KS F 2508) and the method of test for resistance to abrasion coarse aggregate by use of the Accelerated Polishing Machine(ASTM D 3319-90) are generally used to evaluate polishing characteristics of aggregate. In this study, polishing of coarse aggregate of different five rock types were evaluated by KS F 2508(LA abrasion test) and ASTM D 3319-90(PSV method). The results of LA abrasion test and PSV method were contrary to each other. Since LA abrasion test is estimated the quantity of abrasion by the impact of aggregate, it may not be adequate to evaluate the polishing of aggregate by the repetition of tire. In the case of PSV method, the resistance of polishing is estimated the skid resistance variation of polished aggregate after repetition of tire. The PSV method is adequate for the evaluation on polishing of coarse aggregate. From the test results of PSV method, it was founded that rock type, specific gravity, coarse aggregate angularity, flat or elongated particles in coarse aggregate are significant to the resistance characteristic of coarse aggregate.

The artificial lightweight aggregate (ALA) was manufactured using coal bottom ashes produced from a thermoelectric power plant with clay and, the sintering temperature and batch composition dependence upon physical properties of ALA were studied. The bottom ash (BA) had 13wt% coarse particle (>4.75mm) and showed very irregular shape so should be crushed to fine particles to be formed with clay by extrusion process. Also the bottom ash contained a many unburned carbon which generates the gas by oxidation and lighten a aggregate during a sintering process. Plastic index of green bodies decreased with increasing bottom ash content but the extrusion forming process was possible for the green body containing BA up to 40wt% whose plastic index and plastic limit were around 10 and 22 respectively. The ALA containing $30{\sim}40wt%$ BA sintered at $1100{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ showed a volume specific density of $1.3{\sim}1.5$ and water absorption of $13{\sim}15%$ and could be appled for high-rise building and super-long bridge.

Porous concrete contains about 20% voids after compaction so that it has high permeability which secures underground water resources. It is introduced in domestic since 1980' but has problems such as lack of optimized mixture, low strength and durability, efflorescence and other defects, etc. In this study, several mixture were designed based upon site works, and test specimens for compressive strength, tensile strength, flexual strength and permeability, were prepared in a laboratory. After 28days of curing, every performance was tested to find optimum mixture. The mixture was proposed as 380kg/㎥ of unit cement weight, 32% of W/C 10∼13mm of aggregate.

Most difficulties in inducing high flowability of general strength concrete arise from the segregation of aggregates due to the shortage of cementatious binders. To solve the problem, our research team has concentrated on finding the binders to link a gap between coarse and fine aggregates, under the condition not to influence a concrete strength. As a result of using stone powder or a middle class of aggregate size mostly used for asphalt pavement(Max. dia 13mm), we found that flowability of concrete increased significantly without aggregation and decrease of compressive strength.

In rainy weather, permeable concrete pavement has advantages such as good drainage, increased skid resistance, reduced splash and spray behind vehicles for improving the safety of driving vehicles as well as reduction of the traffic noise. It also contributes to improvement of traffic environment. In this study, the fundamental properties of permeable concrete in accordance with maximum size of aggregate, sand percentage and unit cement content were investigated for practical use of permeable concrete pavement. Although the permeability standard for typical permeable asphalt-concrete pavement is $1{\times}10^{-2}cm/sec$, the researchers determined that the coefficient of permeability of the permeable concrete should be set higher at $1{\times}10^{-1}cm/sec$. Then, the researchers measured the coefficient of permeability, strength, void ratio, and continuous void ratio of the permeable concrete while varying maximum size of the aggregate, sand percentage, unit cement content for detailed analysis. It was found that the void ratio, continuous void ratio, and flexural strength were about 15%, 12%, and 5.0MPa, respectively, when the permeability of the concrete was set at $1{\times}10^{-1}cm/sec$. Given that the maximum size of aggregate was $10{\sim}13mm$, we reached the conclusion that the best mix design for permeable concrete was $0{\sim}20%$ of sand percentage and $380kg/m^3$ of unit cement content.
Porous pavements can provide road users with beneficial characteristics such as skid resistance and surface water drainage under rainy condition, and they cause less tire-road noise than conventional hot mix asphalt(HMA) pavements. However, voids of porous pavements are easily clogged by road debris at early stages, which leads to frequent maintenance works. Therefore, this study focused on the way of minimizing void clogging in porous pavements. During mixture design, the quantity of coarse aggregate has been increased to form many straight void conduits (SVCs) in porous HMAs. These SVCs were found to be effective resisting the void clogging problems. Four different porous HMAs(19mm, 13mm, 10mm, and 8mm) were developed and placed on highway roads. Their performances were validated with field tests during the past four years.

The batch and column experiments were performed to overcome the limitation of the neutralization process using the $scCO_2$-water-recycled aggregate, reducing its treatment time to 3 hour. The waste cement mortar and two kinds of recycled aggregate were used for the experiment. In the extraction batch experiment, three different types of waste mortar were reacted with water and $scCO_2$ for 1 ~ 24 hour and the pH of extracted solution from the treated waste mortar was measured to determine the minimum reaction time maintaining below 9.8 of pH. The continuous column experiment was also performed to identify the pH reduction effect of the neutralization process for the massive recycled aggregate, considering the non-equilibrium reaction in the field. Thirty five gram of waste mortar was mixed with 70 mL of distilled water in a high pressurized stainless steel cell at 100 bar and $50^{\circ}C$ for 1 ~ 24 hour as the neutralization process. The dried waste mortar was mixed with water at 150 rpm for 10 min. and the pH of water was measured for 15 days. The XRD and TG/DTA analyses for the waste mortar before and after the reaction were performed to identify the mineralogical change during the neutralization process. The acryl column (16 cm in diameter, 1 m in length) was packed with 3 hour treated (or untreated) recycled aggregate and 220 liter of distilled water was flushed down into the column. The pH and $Ca^{2+}$ concentration of the effluent from the column were measured at the certain time interval. The pH of extracted water from 3 hour treated waste mortar (10 ~ 13 mm in diameter) maintained below 9.8 (the legal limit). From XRD and TG/DTA analyses, the amount of portlandite in the waste mortar decreased after the neutralization process but the calcite was created as the secondary mineral. From the column experiment, the pH of the effluent from the column packed with 3 hour treated recycled aggregate kept below 9.8 regardless of their sizes, identifying that the recycled aggregate with 3 hour $scCO_2$ treatment can be reused in real construction sites.
