  • The present study was investigated combustion characteristics of methane-air mixtures at stratified charge in a constant volume combustion chamber. The results indicated that even the vety lean mixture, which is normally not flammable in single chamber type, could be burned within. a comparatively short time by using sub-chamber with stratified charge method. And the lean inflammability limit of mixture in a main chamber was about ($\phi_m$cr=O.46, when the equivalence ratio of a sub-chamber was $\phi_s$= 1.0. Initial time of pressure increase and total burning times were decreased and maximum combustion pressure. was increased as the equivalence ratio of both sub and main chamber approached unity. Specifically, initial time of pressure increase and total burning times were greatly affected rather by. the equivalence ratio of sub-chamber than that of main chamber. The maximum combustion pressure was little affected if the total equivalence ratio lies in the same range.

  • The present study was investigated combustion characteristics of methane-air mixtures at stratified charge in a constant volume combustion chamber. The main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows. In case of ${\phi}_s=1.0$, total burning times greatly affected rather than initial time of pressure increase and maximum combustion pressure. In case of ${\phi}_t=1.0$, initial time of pressure increase and total burning times were affected considerably in comparison with the case of ${\phi}_s=1.0$. Also, even the very lean mixture which total equivalence ratio is ${\phi}_t=0.69$(${\phi}_s=1.0$, ${\phi}_m=0.65$), by changing configuration of the critical passage-hole and using a stratified mixture, it is possible to decrease substantially the initial time of pressure increase. total burning times and NOx concentration without deteriorating combustion characteristics such as maximum combustion pressure, rate of heat release etc. in comparison with the use of single chamber(in case of ${\phi}=1.0$) only. Specifically, our trends were revealed remarkably in the case of Type D which is reduced a flame contact area of sub-chamber side of the passage-hole.

  • High-frequency combustion instability results from a feedback coupling between the unsteady heat release rate and the acoustic waves formed resonantly in the combustion chamber. It can be modeled as thermoacoustic problems with various degrees of the assumptions and simplifications. This paper presents numerical analysis of self-excited combustion instabilities in a variable-length lean-premixed combustor and designs of passive control devices such as baffle and acoustic resonators in a framework of 3-D FEM Helmholtz solver. Nonlinear behaviors such as steep-fronted shock waves and a finite amplitude limit cycle are also investigated with a compressible flow simulation technique.

  • Experiments were carried out in an atmopheric pressure, lab-scale gas turbine combustor to see the effect of partial premixing on unstable flame structure and $NO_X$ emission characteristics. The swirl angle is 45 deg., fuel-air mixing degrees were varied 0, 50, and 100% respectively at equivalence ration ranging from 0.53 to 0.79. The evaluation of phased-locked OH chemiluminescence images were acquired with an ICCD. $NO_X$ emission characteristics were also investigated at each experimental condition. The effect of the fuel-air mixing degree on the flame structure was obtained from phase-locked $OH^*$ images. And it was obtained from local heat release characteristics that the information about the region which the combustion instability was amplified or damped. It also could be confirmed that ${\sigma}$ has greatly influence on $NO_X $emission characteristics at lean regimes. It would be expected that it could provide invaluable data for understanding the mechanism of combustion instability

  • Experimental investigations were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, optically accessible and laboratory-scale dump combustor. The objective of this study is to obtain the phase-resolved gas temperatures at different phases of the oscillating pressure cycle during unstable combustion. To see the effect of incomplete fuel-air mixing on phase-resolved temperature characteristics, CARS temperature measurements were performed. Results including phase-resolved averaged temperature, normalized standard deviation and temperature probability distribution functions (PDFs) were provided in this paper. It could be found that the profile of mean temperature showed the in-phase relationship with pressure cycle. Temperature PDFs give an insight on the flame behavior as well as NOx emission characteristics. These results would be expected to play an important role in better understanding of driving mechanisms and thermo-acoustic interactions.

  • Three dimensional CFD investigations are carried out to understand the complex flow field in a gas turbine combustor with multi-element fuel injectors. The gas turbine considered here is the GE7FA model which has aye fuel injectors in each combustor can and utilizes lean-premixed combustion to meet nitric oxide emission requirements. Detailed three-dimensional flow characteristics and fuel-air mixture formation process inside the fuel nozzle and gas turbine combustor including five swirl nozzle tips are analyzed using commercial FLUENT code.

  • In this research, we use IDI type constant volume combustion chamber which may make up stratified combustion to construct the design back data of lean-burn engine. Some experiments are conducted by the passagehole angle in the adapter of main chamber and sub-chamber. The effects on the combustion characteristics according to the ignition timing are investigated. The used fuel is methanol prospective for alternative fuel. Fuel is injected under 10.78MPa using solenoid and accumulator. As the results of the experiment, combustion characteristics reveals that ignition timing, passagehole angle and shape greatly effects on. Lean inflammability limit is extended to 0.45 in equivalence ratio.

  • The effect of swirl flow structures on combustion dynamics of two interacting, lean-premixed flames was experimentally investigated, with a particular emphasis on swirl numbers and swirl rotational directions. Our results show that the amplitude of limit cycle oscillations is very sensitive to the combination of swirl numbers and rotational directions, while the instability frequency remains nearly unchanged. The counter-rotating cases show significantly lower pressure perturbations, and this behavior appears to be related to the formation of compact interacting zone with higher heat release rate, indicating the presence of increased flame surface wrinkling caused by intense turbulence.

  • The influences of number of spark plug on ignitability, combustion characteristics and combustion promotion effect were examined to establish the design conception of spark ignition system for lean burn. Ignitability was increased remarkably by increasing of number of spark plug at combustion wall. Combustion duration was shortened and maximum combustion pressure was increased in accordance with increasing of spark plug number. Rate of overall combustion promotion considered of combustion duration and combustion pressure was 28% in two point ignition and 40% in four point ignition. It was verified that heat release, heat loss and combustion duration were affected by flame area, heat transfer area and maximum flame travel distance respectively.
