For this purpose, we conducted qualitative research by sampling 14 married immigrant women who had lived in Korea for over three years by having in depth interviews with them. This study employed the grounded theory method suggested by Strauss and Corbin(1998). When raw data from in depth interviews with the participants were processed by open coding through the continuous comparison method with theoretical sensitivity, a total of 13 categories, 27 sub.categories, and 71 concepts were extracted. In case of axial coding, according to the results of analyzing through the paradigm procedure, the causal conditions for the community living experiences of married immigrant women in rural areas were 'Uncertain start' and 'Confront practical problems,' and the central phenomenon was 'Search for existence to participate in community activities.' Contextual conditions affecting the phenomenon was 'Regret international marriage,' 'Experience conflicts,' and 'Look with negative prejudices,' 'Overcome the actual' and action/interaction strategies were 'Look for a breakthrough of life' and 'Manage to acceptance.' Intervening conditions for promoting or suppressing the action/interaction strategies for the central phenomenon were 'Social support system' and 'local limitations,' and as a result, the community living experiences of married immigrant women in rural areas appeared to 'Prepare the future,' 'Hope continuous social activities,' and 'Expect public support systems.'

  • The main purpose of this study is to provide the necessary information for educational intervention by discovering the components and factors related to the adaptation experience of male students in the department of nursing. The participants were seven male nursing students. Data were collected from in-depth interviews, and the results were analyzed by the Giorgi's phenomenological analysis method. The main components of adaptation experience of participants were summarized into four categories: 'hopes and expectations for the future careers,' 'conflicts and wandering under realistic issues,' 'compromise and emotion management,' and 'efforts for self-growth.' Causative, accelerative, and recursive characteristics were shown among these components. The adaptation process was structured in the temporal context. The results suggest that for amicable adaptation, internal controls, such as 'improving willpower,' 'inspiring solid career awareness,' and 'selecting adaptation strategy' were all critical. Moreover, the support of families, relatives, college seniors, and department professors were revealed as the factors that help in the adaptation experiences. Based on the results, further studies are required to identify the dropout rates by maladaptation of male nursing students, and analyze possible factors that contribute to dropout and maladaptation. In addition, it is necessary to construct various coping methods and practical support systems, as well as to develop appropriate educational programs.

  • This study, driven by the question of 'what the experience of healing of female sexual abuse victims is like,' explores the process the victims undergo as they heal from the traumas. Using the methods suggested by Strauss and Corbin's Grounded theory, it analyzes nine interviews taken from victims who have received counseling. The study found that the central phenomena that take place in the process of their healing is 'mental pain due to the damage caused by sexual abuse,' the causal conditions are 'the recognition of the sexual abuse' and 'desperation,' and the contextual conditions are 'the reaction of the close ones of the victims,' 'the preconception about sexuality,' and 'the incarceration and punishment of the offenders.' The victims have been intervened in the healing process by 'being supported' and 're-interpreting the meaning of the damage caused by sexual abuse,' and are found to utilize the interactive strategy among 'facing their emotions,' 'learning new coping strategies,' and 'hoping for the future.' They are also found, as a result of the healing, to 'live unafraid as survivors' and 'have structured their lives in a new way.' This study is of significance in systematically elucidating the healing process and the related elements found through the voices of the survivors of sexual abuse in the context of the Korean society and culture. The limits of this study and suggestions about the studies that should follow this one are included as well.

  • This study attempts to develop a theory on the evolving process of wealthy major donors' sharing lives in Korea through a grounded theory approach. To conduct this study, the researchers have in-depth interviews with 11 exemplary wealthy major donors who have more than one million US dollars in his or her own asset and donate more than ten thousand US dollars annually. In data analysis, this study identifies 161 concepts on the evolving process of wealthy major donors' sharing lives; and the concepts are categorized with 33 sub-categories and 14 categories. In the paradigm model on the evolving process of wealthy major donors' sharing lives, it is identified that the central phenomenon, 'practicing sharing lives as noblesse oblige', is related with the causal conditions such as 'learning through memories and observation', 'realizing my duties', and 'emphasizing'; and the central phenomenon is related with the contingent conditions such as 'being sensitive to external evaluation', 'having limited information on giving', 'distrusting donation related environments'. The action/interactional sequences such as 'utilizing relationships' and 'strengthening active participation' are accomplished by moderating conditions such as 'having internal and external supports' and 'guiding by firm conviction'. It reveals that as a result, wealthy major donors enjoy the feeling of becoming a ideal and true wealthy person, establish sharing lives as firm and major parts of overall lives, and experience strong desires for better future and society. In this study, 'generous sharing that shares personal heritages and social benefits' is analyzed as a core category; it shows that sharing of wealthy major donors is related to the characteristics of generosity practice based on moral self-benefiting rather than complete altruistic characteristics or self-sacrificial characteristics. The process analysis reveals that it has the following stages: first, initial giving by exposure to causes or requests; second, routine practice of giving; third, evolution of practice of giving with gradual expansion in quantities and qualities; and fourth, living with giving. In the process, the following four types are identified: devoted wealthy donors for sharing, wealthy donors practicing sharing in daily life, wealthy donors practicing sharing with learning on external stimulus, and wealthy donors practicing sharing on empathy. Finally, this study discusses both meanings of identifying and developing a theory on the evolving process of wealthy major donors' sharing lives and implications of the research results in cultivating and developing potential wealthy major donors in Korea.
