  • The adsorption property and ability of domestic zeolites for some heavy metal ions (Ag, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn), which may cause a serious environmental problem in industrial wastewater, were evaluated on ore unit through a series of adsorption experiments together with careful examinations of mineral composition and properties of the zeolites. Though the adsorption behavior basically took place in the form of a cation exchange reaction, the higher CEC value does not necessarily to imply the higher adsorption capacity for a specific heavy metal. A general trend of the adsorption selectivity for heavy metals in the zeolites is determined to be as follow: $Ag\geq$Pb>Cr,Cu$\geq$Zn>Mn, but the adsorption properties of heavy metal ions somewhat depend on the species and composition of zeolite. Clinoptilolite tends to adsorb selectively Cu in case of Cr and Cu, whereas heulandite prefers Cr to Cu. A dominant adsorption selectivity of the zeolite ores for Ag and Pb is generally conspicuous regardless of their zeolite species and composition. The zeolite ores exhibit a preferential adsorption especially for $Ag^{+}$ so as not to regenerate when treated with $Na^{+}$ . In the adsorption capacity for heavy meta ions, the zeolites differ in great depending on their species: ferrierite>clinoptilolite>heulandite. Considering the CEC value of mordenite, the mordenite-rich ore appears to be similar to the clinoptilolite ore in the adsorption capacity. The adsorption capacity for heavy metals is not positively proportional to the CEC values of the zeolites measured by the exchange reaction with ammonium ion. In addition, the adsorption capacity roughly tends to depend on the zeolite contents, i.e., the grade of zeolite ore, but the trend is not consistent at all in some ores. These may be caused by the adsorption selectivity for some specific heavy metals, the presence of possible stacking micro-faults and natural cations such as K hardly to exchange in the zeolite. Considering the economic availability and functional effectiveness as natural zeolite resources, clinoptilolite ores could be applicable to utilize the domestic zeolites for the removal of heavy metals.

  • Zr-benzendicarboxylate structure, UiO-66 was prepared in 1-L batch scale by using a unique sonochemical-solvothermal combined synthesis method. The produced UiO-66 showed uniform particles of ca. $0.2{\mu}m$ in size with the BET surface area of $1,375m^2/g$ in high product yield (>95%). The UiO-66 showed 198 and 84 mg/g $CO_2$ adsorption capacity at 273 K and 298 K, respectively, with excellent $CO_2$ selectivity ($CO_2:N_2=32:1$) at ambient conditions. The isosteric heat of $CO_2$ adsorption varied from 33 to 25 kJ/mol as the adsorption progressed. The UiO-66 tested for xylene isomer separation in a liquid-phase batch mode confirmed preferential adsorption of the adsorbent for o-xylene over m-, and p-xylene.

  • This research is to set a direction on the recycle of Discarded Automotive tires reforming them into heavy metal adsorbents by developing a particular functional group inducing formation of Chelate complexes with heavy metal ion in the water, on the surface of the used tire conventionally turned into powdered form. For this purpose, through FT-IR, XRD, XRF, SEM, elution test we confirmed and analyzed the property of newly reformed scrapped tires, and functional group. Also, by Kinetics Study we produced an invariable value applying to absorption models. Conclusively the absorption preference of heavy metal is determined to be $Pb^{2+}>Cu^{2+}>Cd^{2+}$, and it reached absorption balance within first 30 minutes, also the absorption reaction time increased from 0.27 to $1.78\sim3.15(g/mg{\cdot}min)$, and showed more than 80% of removal efficiency. This result proved that the efficiency increased by 10 times compared with the conventional powdered Discarded Automotive tires, and the Discarded Automotive tire which implemented the Functional group can exhibit a great efficiency as heavy metal adsorbent.

  • To investigate the sorption characteristics of Cs, which is one of the major isotopes of nuclear waste, on natural zeolite chabazite, XRD, EPMA, EC, pH, and ICP analysis were performed to obtain the informations on chemical composition, cation exchange capacity, sorption kinetics and isotherm of chabazite as well as competitive adsorption with other cations ($Li^+$, $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Rb^+$, $Sr^{2+}$). The chabazite used in this experiment has chemical composition of $Ca_{1.15}Na_{0.99}K_{1.20}Mg_{0.01}Ba_{0.16}Al_{4.79}Si_{7.21}O_{24}$ and its Si/Al ratio and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were 1.50 and 238.1 meq/100 g, respectively. Using the adsorption data at different times and concentrations, pseudo-second order and Freundlich isotherm equation were the most adequate ones for kinetic and isotherm models, indicating that there are multi sorption layers with more than two layers, and the sorption capacity was estimated by the derived constant from those equations. We also observed that equivalent molar fractions of Cs exchanged in chabazite were different depending on the ionic species from competitive ion exchange experiment. The selectivity sequence of Cs in chabazite with other cations in solution was in the order of $Na^+$, $Li^+$, $Sr^{2+}$, $K^+$ and $Rb^+$ which seems to be related to the hydrated diameters of those caions. When the exchange equilibrium relationship of Cs with other cations were plotted by Kielland plot, $Sr^{2+}$ showed the highest selectivity followed by $Na^+$, $Li^+$, $K^+$, $Rb^+$ and Cs showed positive values with all cations. Equilibrium constants from Kielland plot, which can explain thermodynamics and reaction kinetics for ionic exchange condition, suggest that chabazite has a higher preference for Cs in pores when it exists with $Sr^{2+}$ in solution, which is supposed to be due to the different hydration diameters of cations. Our rsults show that the high selectivity of Cs on chabazite can be used for the selective exchange of Cs in the water contaminated by radioactive nuclei.

  • Urbanization causes many environmental, hydrological and ecological problems such as distortion of the natural water circulation system, increase in nonpoint source pollutants in stormwater runoff, degradation of surface water quality, and damage to the ecosystem. Due to the increase in impervious surface by urbanization, developed countries apply low impact development (LID) techniques as important alternatives to reduce the impacts of urbanization. In Korea, LID techniques were employed since 2012 in order to manage nonpoint source pollutants. LID technology is a technique for removing pollutants using a variety of physical, chemical and biological mechanisms in plants, microorganisms and filter media with the reduced effluence of stormwater runoff by mimicking natural water circulation system. These LID facilities are used in a variety of filter media, but an assessment has not been carried out for the comprehensive comparison evaluation of adsorption and desorption characteristics for the pollutant removal capacity. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze the adsorption and desorption characteristics of various filter media used in the LID facilities such as sand, gravel, bioceramic, wood chips and bottom ash etc. in reducing heavy metals(Pb, Cu). In this study, the adsorption affinity for Pb in all filter media was higher than Cu. Pseudo second order equation and Langmuir-3 isotherm are more applicable in the adsorption kinetic model and adsorption isotherm model, respectively. As a result of the desorption experiment, the filter media does not exceed KSLT which is the hazardous substance leaching limit, showing the capability of the filter media in LID. The bioceramic and woodchip as filter medias were evaluated and exhibited excellent adsorption capacity for Pb.

  • A soil stabilization method is an effective and practical remediation alternative for arsenic (As) and heavy metal contaminated farmland soils nearby abandoned metal mine in Korea. This method is a technique whereby amendments are incorporated and mixed with a contaminated soil. Toxic metal bind to the amendments, which reduce their mobility in soil, so the successful stabilization of multi-element contaminated soil depends on the combination of critical elements in the soil and the type of amendments. The objective of this study is to investigate the treatment effects and applicability of limestone (LS) and steel refining slag (SRS) as the amendment for farmland soil contaminated with As and heavy metals, and a lab-column test was conducted for achieving this purpose. The result showed that soil treated with LS and SRS maintained pH buffer capacity and, as a result, the heavy metal leaching concentration was quite low below the water quality standard compared to untreated soil which leachate exceeding the water quality standard was observed, however, the arsenic concentration rather increased with increasing mixture ratio of SRS. This was believed to be related to phosphorus (P) contained in SRS, and dominancy in the competitive adsorption relation between As and P binding strongly to iron might be different according to soil characteristic. We suggested that LS is a effective amendment for reducing heavy metals in soil, and SRS should be used after investigating its applicability based on the adsorption selectivity of arsenic and phosphorus in selected soil.

  • In this study, we have developed taste and other functional enhancements of yam chips, from tasteless and flavorless yam slices, through the process of soaking freeze-dried yam in different commercially available juices, including apple, omija (fruit of Maximowiczia typica), grape, wild grape, orange, tomato, red ginseng, and black garlic juice. The analyses of color (brightness, redness and yellowness), pH, brix, acidity, total polyphenol, total flavonoids, total sugar and reducing sugar, DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity, reducing power and nitrite scavenging activity, of the different yam chips showed that the freeze-dried yam slices absorb various components of fruit juices, such as flavonoids, sugars, organic acids and flavors, during the soaking process. These changes resulted in increased taste (both sweet and sour tastes), flavor and antioxidant activity in the yam chips. The soaking time for yam slices in juice is considered to be a crucial factor for the taste and bioactivity of yam chips. In the case of grape juice-yam chips, which had the highest preference among the 8 different chips, the optimum soaking time was noted as 120 seconds. The optimization of the soaking process is necessary for various juices. These results suggest that taste, and other functional enhancements, in yam chips can be developed by juice-soaking and freeze-drying methods.

  • Physical properties of Yukwa base extruded with glutinous rice flour, rice flour, defatted soy flour, and salt using an twin-screw extruder were investigated. The ingredients were extruded at various moisture contents (16-18%), screw speeds (300 & 400 rpm) at 43.4 kg/hr feed rate. Length and specific volume of Yukwa base increased with decreasing moisture contents. Hunter's color L* values of Yukwa base was higher whereas $a^*\;and\;b^*$ values were lower with increasing moisture content. Water absorption index of Yukwa base increased with increasing moisture contents. X-ray diffraction of Yukwa base showed B type moisture content of 16% and 17% while it showed A type moisture content of 18%. Degree of crystallinity and breaking strength of Yukwa base were the lowest in the moisture content of 16% while the lowest value for hardness was found in the moisture content of 16% and of 17% with screw speed 400 rpm for all samples. In the microstructure of cross section of Yukwa base, air cell size was larger and cell wall was thicker as moisture content increased. The sensory evaluation of the Yukwa base showed that color and flavor were not significantly different among samples, while taste, appearance, mouth feel, and overall preference were higher as moisture contents decreased.

  • Tofu was prepared with various herbs (green tea, rosemary, lavender and thyme) and the tofu quality was investigated during storage. In the measurement of tofu color, the L and b values increased during storage period. Especially, the b value was very high at 8 days after storage. The pH value of tofu increased until 6 days of storage, but then decreased. The turbidity gradually increased until 6 days of storage and rapidly increased at 8 days of storage. The microorganism count of herb tofu was lower an that of control tofu during storage. Especially green tea tofu showed the lowest psychrotrophic microorganism count as $1.3{\times}10^8\;CFU/g$. In addition, lavender tofu showed the lowest aerobic mesophilic microorganism count $(2.0{\times}10^7\;CFU/g)$ at 8 days of storage. In texture analysis, hardness and chewiness of herb tofu increased with increasing storage period. Springiness increased to 2 or 4 days of storage but decreased after 6 or 8 days. Therefore, herb tofu is expected to have good quality physiologically as well as microbiologically.
