  • This study aimed to identify the difference and relation of eating and mental-psychological state according to the level of cigarette consumption in adolescents and to provide the basic data for the effective smoking cessation program. Data were obtained from the Ninth Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2013 KYRBS). SPSS 18.0 was used to analyzed with descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results showed eating and mental-psychological state was a significant difference according to the level of cigarette consumption. Smoking amount were negative related to eating(r=-.154, p<.01) and there were positive related to mental-psychological state(r=.122, p<.01). There is negative correlation between eating and mental-psychological health(r=-.165,p<.01). Therefore, it is necessary to include eating and mental-psychological health to develop smoking cessation program for adolescents.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to describe the characteristics of smoking prevention programs in Korea, to estimate overall effect size of Korean smoking prevention programs, and to investigate effect size variations by program modality and instruction method. Method: Meta-analysis was performed on2l programs in 20 studies. Result: The estimation of overall effect size for knowledge and attitude was not possible because effect sizes were not homogeneous in this meta-analysis. However, effect sizes of studies that were socially influential programs or active/interactive methods were larger than information-oriented programs or passive/non-interactive methods in the pictures. The effects for behavioral outcomes were generally not as positive and not statistically significant. Q statistics showed that variations among effect sizes within program modality and instruction method classifications were heterogeneous. Conclusion: The results from this meta-analysis support the continued use of socially influential programs and active/interactive methods for smoking prevention programs. Because behavioral effect might be the fundamental objective of smoking prevention programs, the present results indicate that smoking prevention programs should consider adopting more effective programs.

Method: A total of 69 male middle school students participated in this study. Each of them was assigned to either smoking prevention program (n=35) or to a control group (n=34). The intervention for the experiment group was developed by the investigator. The questionnaires for assessing knowledge and attitude were created by modifying scaled employed in previous studies. Result: 1) The experimental group with smoking prevention program showed higher scores in knowledge for smoking harmfulness in comparison with the control group (F=18.782, p=.000). 2) The experimental group with the smoking prevention program showed lower scores in attitude toward smoking behavior in comparison with the control group (F=17.483. p=.000). Conclusion: The results showed that the smoking prevention program was effective on improving knowledge and attitude toward smoking behavior in male middle school students. More studies on development of comprehensive smoking prevention programs for adolescents need to be conducted in the future.

Data were collected from September 1st 2012 to March 31st 2013 of 200 adolescent smokers who were participating in smoking cessation school at W hospital in B city. As a results, there were significant differences in cancer preventive behaviors by grade, religion, benefit, barrier, perceived health status, daily living, alcohol, exercise, nicotine dependency, first smoking age, smoking duration and non-smoking intention. Cancer preventive behaviors were weakly negative related to knowledge about cancer, And there is weakly positive correlation between cancer preventive behaviors and attitude about cancer. Meaningful variables which explain cancer preventive behaviors were daily living, barrier, grade, exercise, benefit, knowledge about cancer, smoking cessation intention in order. Total explanation power was 30.6% and daily living has most explanation power. In conclusion, It is necessary to encourage sound hobbies and exercise instead of smoking for adolescent smokers in their daily living. And health education programmes, based on the grade and smoking cessation intention of adolescent smokers, need to be developed to emphasize the benefit of cancer preventive behaviors, and to decrease barriers against those behaviors.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the degree of changes in knowledge and attitude toward smoking and to examine the factors affecting knowledge and attitude for smoking after providing a smoking prevention program based on social influence model for a year to middle school students. Study population consists of 665 subjects of middle school students(aged 14 years) in Gumi city in Kyeongsangbukdo Province. Among them three-hundred sixty-seven students(intervention group) were educated to a smoking prevention program for 1 year from April 1999 to April 2000. School-based four-class program to prevent smoking was developed. The program provides instruction about short and long-term negative physiologic and social consequences of smoking and also discussed the health hazards of smoking, social pressure to smoke, peer norms regarding tobacco use, and refusal skill. A 45-item self-administered structured questionnaire was designed to evaluate the change of knowledge, attitude, smoking rate and the amount of smoking. The instrument was comprised of 11 knowledge items, thirteen attitude item and demographic items. Each scales were created by summing responses to each items within each scales and high scores on the knowledge, attitude, and smoking behavioral intention scales indicated positive responses. Based on the changes before and after the implementation of smoking prevention program between intervention and control group, the change of scores on knowledge were significantly different between the control group and the intervention group(p<0.05) and the change of scores on the attitude toward smoking was significantly different between intervention and control group. The change of smoking rate were not showing a significant difference between two groups but the amount of smoking were significantly reduced in intervention group than control group. In multiple regression analysis on changes of knowledge about smoking, the variables of smoking prevention program education, previous knowledge on smoking and students' school performance were selected the significant variables. In multiple regression to analysis of the factors influencing changes in attitude toward smoking, the variables of smoking prevention program education, previous knowledge on smoking were shown to be significant. The smoking prevention program was effective on change of knowledge and attitude of middle school students. In considering that the policy should be needed to extent of implementation of school-based health education curricula based on social influence model and it would contribute to reduce smoking of students.

  • This study was conducted to identify convergence factors affecting smoking behavior among college students through the lens of a Health Belief Model. A descriptive study was carried out with 417 college students in Jeju, South Korea. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were performed using the SPSS 19.0 program. The results showed that sex(t=-7.44, p<.001), pocket money(t=-2.06, p=.040), smoking in the family(t=4.43, p<.001), smoking of close friends(t=9.59, p<.001), and perceived barriers(t=0.87, p=.014), cues to action(t=6.33, p<.001) were statistically significant variables influencing smoking. These findings indicate that among smoking-related and health belief-related variables needs to be considered for preventive and therapeutic approach to stop smoking in college students.
