Smoking Status and its Related Factors in Male Students of Middle and High Schools in Kwangju (광주지역 남자 중.고등학생의 흡연실태와 흡연관련 요인)

  • To identify the smoking status and its related factors in middle and high school boys in Kwanju a study was performed from 15th to loth of June 1992. Population were selected by two-stage stratified random sampling method and total 3,959 students replied to the self-administered questionnaire survey (1,574 in middle school, 1,664 in academic high school, 712 in business high school). The results were as follows ; 1. The proportion of current smokers was 1.5% in middle schools and 20.1% in high schools. And the smoking rates increased with school grade years (p<0.01). 2. For the motivation of smoking, curiosity was the most frequent factor and the next was temptation by friends. 3. The most common situation on the first experience of smoking was that middle school boys smoked a cigarette which was found in a house, through curiosity, with friends, at home. High school boys smoked a cigarette taken from friends, through curiosity, with friend, on the road or at home. 4. The proportion of smokers who smoke a cigarette regularly was 34.8% among smokers in middle school and 70.2% among smokers in high school. The most proportion of duration of smoking was less than 1 month among middle school boys (20.8%) and more than 2 years among high school boys (43.9%). The first smoking experience was in elementary school among middle school boys and the third grade of middle school in high school students. Most current smokers (73.9% in middle school boys, 65.3% in high school boys) wanted to quit smoking. 5. Smokers had significant association with intimate friend's smoking, mother's and brother's smoking, inharmonious friendships, dissatisfied with home and school life, lower school grades, generous attitude to other smokers, lack of knowledge to passive smoking and no contact to mass media (TV) (p<0.01).

  • This is a quasi-experimental study using the design before and after time gap of non-equivalence with comparative group performed to confirm the effects of END smoking cessation motivational program on the Carbon monoxide, Smoking Abstinence Self-efficiency, Days of smoking, Amount of smoking in the smoking high school students. The study subjects were the smoking students in a general high school located in C-City who were interested in the smoking cessation including 27 students in test group and 28 in the control group. Data collection period was from July 12 to October 4, 2018. END smoking cessation motivational program, the test intervention in this study, The study results are as follows. "There will be a difference of physiological factors between the test group that participates in END smoking cessation motivational program and the control group that does not" is supported. smoking cessation self-efficiency(z=110.00, p<.001), Days of smoking (z=640.00, p<.001), Daily smoking amount (z=520.50, p<.016), Considering these results, the application of this program is suggested to lower the smoking rate of the smoking high school students and to motivate the smoking cessation at the schools.

  • This study aimed to examine the difference of tobacco use, health behaviors and family factors according to the daily tobacco use among female adolescents in South Korea using cross-sectional national data. The study used raw data from the 11th Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey that was performed in 2015. Data of a total of 2,006 female students in high school were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 23. Of the girl 27.5% in high school reported current smoker. Approximately 19.2% of the participants were classified as a daily smoker group. In the multinomial logistic analysis, factors associated with daily smoking were mother's smoking habit, facilities of residence, subjective academic achievement and subjective economic status. In order to develop health promotion strategy and education programs, it is expected to consider factors found relevant in this study.

Influence of Smoker Image Perceived Cigarette Advertising on Intention of Adulthood Smoking Among Highschool Students (고등학생들의 담배광고에서 지각한 흡연자 이미지가 성인기 흡연 의도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and validate of Smoker Image Scale and to evaluate the effect of the smoker image on adulthood smoking intention of youth. Data were collected from 610 high school students were analysed using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 21.0 programs. Smoker Image Scale were developed and verified the reliability and validity. In addition, ordinal logistic regression analysis was implemented for impact of smoker image on adulthood smoking intention. As a results of analysis, first, the developed Smoker Image Scale confirmed with 10 items in 1 factor and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ was .91. Second, men and smokers had significantly higher positive smoker image formed by cigarette advertising. Third, positive smoker image had a significant positive effect on adulthood smoking intention while controlling of gender and smoking status. Positive smoker image formed by cigarette advertising was associated with adulthood smoking intention of youth. Based on these findings, implications and suggestions for future research were discussed for the risk of adulthood smoking intention of youth.

Relationship between Cigarette Smoking and Depression Symptoms of High School Students (우리나라 고등학생의 흡연과 우울증의 관련성)

  • Smoking among adolescents is a major public health problem. This study was performed to determine the association between cigarette smoking and depression Symptoms of high school students. Data were drawn from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey 2009. Subjects were 36,657 high school students living in the community. Adjusting for covariates (sex, school year, school education, economics, school record, hours of sleep per day, self-reported stress, self reported happiness, self-reported health status, suicidal thinking), smoker(OR=1.43, 95% CI: 1.35-1.50), 10~19 cigarettes per day(OR=1.48, 95% CI: 1.22-1.79) and more than 20 cigarettes per day(OR=2.05, 95% CI: 1.59-2.64) were independent risk factors for depression Symptoms. It was found that cigarette smoking is a independent factor related to adolescent depression. Adolescent smoking cessation is needed to management of adolescent depression.

Analysis of Correlation between Smoking and Gingivitis an Actual Condition of Oral Health Care in Some Vocational High School Boy Students (일부지역 실업계 고등학교 남학생의 구강관리실태 및 흡연과 치은염과의 상관성 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine correlation between smoking and gingivitis in boy students targeting 281 students in the 2nd grade for vocational boys' high schools where are located in Cheongju city. As a result of carrying out questionnaire research and oral examination, the following conclusions were obtained. 1. The smoking-experience rate in subjects of this study accounted for 59.4%. The current smoking rate was indicated to be 41.3%. Students' average gingivitis prevalence accounted for 61.5%. Out of those students, the students with experience of smoking accounted for 44.8%. The average gingivitis index was $0.20{\pm}0.27$. Out of those students, the students with experience of smoking were indicated to be $0.29{\pm}0.31$. 2. In case of having experience of smoking, the probability of having gingivitis was high(p = 0.000). The more drinking experience led to the higher gingivitis prevalence(p = 0.010). 3. In the multi-variate analysis, a case of gingivitis prevalence was higher in the group with experience of smoking by 5.5 times(p = 0.000) compared to the non-smoking group. A case that the smoking volume for a day is over 6 pieces was higher by 8.4 times(p = 0.000) compared to the non-smoking group. A case of being over 25 months in the smoking period was higher 13.2 times(p = 0.000) compared to the non-smoking group.

Factors Related to Early Smoking of High School Students in Daegu City and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province (대구, 경북지역 고등학생의 조기흡연과 관련된 요인)

  • =Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the smoking rate and the related factors to early smoking of high school students.Methods: A questionnaire was administered to 920 students in 3 high schools in Daegu Metropolitan Results: Of total respondents, 1.8% had experience of smoking. Of those, 20.2% citied curiosity, 9.0% cited upon recommendation of friends, and 6.2% cited stress management as the main reason for their smoking. Separately, 53.1% responded habitually and 26.5% responded stress management as the main reason for continuing smoking. Of total former smokers, 68.4% said 'worry about their health' as the main reason for quitting smoking. Of those who failed to quit smoking, 58.7% cited 'weakness of will' as the main reason for their failure. Of total respondents, 10.8% were smoking currently. 'Smoking of family member'(p<0.01) and 'intent to smoke'(p<0.05) were significantly associated to early smoking of the subjects.In multivariate logistic regression analysis, 'higher levels of stress' and 'smoking of family member' were significant related factors to early smoking.Conclusions: Amid growing number of early smokers, it is imminent to identify the actual state of discourage smoking. In addition, education programs need to be developed to assist early smokers in quitting smoking and prevent smoking among youth.

Relationship between smoking experience and internet addiction in adolescence (우리나라 청소년의 흡연 경험과 인터넷 중독과의 관련성)

  • Smoking in adolescence can cause other health risks such as drinking and abusing drugs. Besides, it goes on adulthood so it can threaten their health all days. This study want to know the relationship between smoking and internet addiction in mid- and highschool students in Korea. It conducted for 38,409 middle school students and 36,657 highschool student in Korea. Smoking and internet addiction was investigated by chi-squared test and the relation between them was done by a Logistic Regression Analysis. The statistical significance is under 0.05. The percentage of smoking is 34.2% in male student and 19.7% in female student. The percentage of internet addiction is 17.6% in male student and 11.4% in female student and it is higher in students who smoked by 1.06 times for male student and 1.62 times for female student. This result shows that smoking which is non-healthy habit is related with internet addiction significantly. Smoking can cause high stress and this stress is shown to be developed in internet addiction. In conclusion, smoking and internet addiction in adolescence are bad habits and they are affect each other. Therefore we have to consider a measure by looking as smoking, stress and internet addiction are complex health risks rather than trying to prevent and treat them individually.
