  • Purpose: This 3D-FEA study was performed to investigate the influence of marginal bone loss pattern around the implant to the stress distribution. Material and methods: From the right second premolar to the right second molar of the mandible was modeled according to the CT data of a dentate patient. Teeth were removed and an implant ($\Phi\;4.0{\times}10.0mm$) was placed in the first molar area. Twelve bone models were created; Studied bone loss conditions were horizontal bone loss and vertical bone loss, assumed bone loss patterns during biologic width formation, and pathologic vertical bone loss with or without cortification. Axial, buccolingual, and oblique force was applied independently to the center of the implant crown. The Maximum von Mises stress value and stress contour was observed and von Mises stresses at the measuring points were recorded. Results: The stress distribution patterns were similar in the non-resorption and horizontal resorption models, but differed from those in the vertical resorption models. Models assuming biologic width formation showed altered stress distribution, and weak bone to implant at the implant neck area seams accelerates stress generation. In case of vertical bone resorption, contact of cortical bone to the implant may positively affect the stress distribution.

  • An actual slope failure was analyzed in residual soils at Jinju. Due to rainfall infiltration, the safety factor decreases in the unsaturated layers, since the effective stress and shear strength decrease. In this study, the effective stress is based on suction stress using soil water retention curve. Unsaturated properties were evaluated on soil water retention curve, hydraulic conductivity and shear strength with samples from the site. After infiltration analysis of unsaturated flow under the actual rainfall, the distribution of pore water pressure could be calculated in the slope layers. In the stress field of finite elements, an elastic analysis calculated total stress distribution in the layers and also shear stresses on the slip surface using elastic model. On the slip surface, suction stress and effective stress evaluated the shear strength. As a result, the factor of safety was calculated due to rainfall, which could simulate the actual slope failure. In particular, it was found that the suction stress increases and both the effective stress and the shear strength decrease simultaneously on the slip surface.

  • The hypothesis on effective stress of unsaturated soil is validated by $K_0$ consolidation results of triaxial tests for the compacted residual soil. The stress characteristic curve (SSCC) can describe unsaturated soil behavior on water contents, which was defined from shear strength or from soil water characteristic curves. In this study, it was found that the stress path of $K_0$ consolidation can also define the SSCC. The effective stress was defined by SSCC. $K_0$ paths for various matric suctions could be described as a unique line by effective stress. The measured values of $K_0$ were interpreted by effective stress as a constant with respect to matric suction. Since the SSCC from $K_0$ consolidation agrees with that from the shear strength, the SSCC from soil water retention curve could describe effective stress behavior consistently on both $K_0$ consolidation path and stress at failure. The effective stress based on SSCC can describe the entire unsaturated behavior from consolidation to failure.

  • Soil water retention characteristics are influenced by factors of the confining stress and hysteresis in the variably saturated soil. In the description of effective stress based on hydraulic characteristics, the contribution of a matric suction to effective stress then varies with depth or is different between the processes of infiltration and evaporation. Unsaturated effective stress can be described based on suction stress characteristic curve, in which a representative soil water retention curve is required to evaluate. Pressure palate extractor tests under various confining stresses were performed and the hysteresis of drying and wetting process was also acquired. In the process of drying or wetting, a unique relationship has been estimated on the effective volumetric water content and the matric suction, which defines suction stress characteristic curve. In the unsaturated shear strength from triaxial tests, the suction stress and the effective stress were evaluated by matric suctions. The failure envelop by effective stress based on soil water retention characteristics was unique and the same as the saturated one. The measured suction stress from triaxial tests was similar to that from the soil water retention curve. Therefore it is verified that a representative soil water retention curve can be defined which is independent of the confining effect under wetting or drying process of the hysteresis.

  • Suction stress is evaluated from soil water retention curves in order to deduce effective stress in unsaturated soils. $K_0$ consolidated triaxial tests were performed for silty sand to interpret effective stress in consolidation and shearing of unsaturated soils. Suction stresses from both consolidation stress and shear strength in triaxial tests were compared with those from soil water retention curves. The effective stresses on consolidation and shear strength are on each unique line, which are the same as that of the saturated case. It was found that the effective stress from soil water retention curves agrees with those from consolidation and shear strength in triaxial tests.

  • This study was conducted to develop the interlayer mixture that absorbs the stress between the old concrete pavement and the asphalt overlay pavement layer. The elasticity, the flexibility, the consistency and the impermeability is required for high-elastic Stress Absorbing Interlayer(HSAI) to absorb and disperse the stress that causes the flexural and horizontal movements of the joint and the crack. The HSAI developed from foreign product was satisfied with the design criteria. The specimens using the HSAI showed the significant reduction of the reflective crack compared those not using the HSAI. The significance included that the life of shear failure and horizontal displacement resistance increased 4 times. The life of the share failure increased to 5 times and the horizontal displacement increased to 9 times according to the selection of surface course material which showed the excellence of the HSAI.

  • The stress-strain relationship of an unsaturated soil was analyzed by Bishop stress descriptions in this study. The failure criteria could be defined uniquely by the Bishop stress and were also independent of matric suctions. In the low level of matric suctions the failure criteria have a linear relationship and the estimated criterion fitted the measured accurately. Deformation moduli in the small strain level were linearly increased generally with respect to Bishop stress.

  • In this study, the triaxial behaviour of an unsaturated soil was analyzed by Bishop stress descriptions. $K_0$ stress paths and those final values were independent of matric suctions after describing by the Bishop stress. The failure criteria could be defined uniquely by the Bishop stress and were also independent of matric suctions. In the low level of matric suctions the failure criteria have a linear relationship and the estimated criterion fits the measured accurately. The variable ${\chi}$ for describing the Bishop stress was a constant theoretically under the low level of matric suctions. The suction stress could be defined at zero deviatoric stress in the failure criteria and increased linearly with respect to matric suctions in both the theory and the experiments.

  • Purpose: The change of the marginal bone around dental implants have significance not only for the functional maintenance but also for the esthetic success of the implant. The purpose of this study was to investigate the load transfer of internal conical joint type implant according to marginal bone resorption by using the three-dimensional finite element analysis model. Materials and methods: The internal conical joint type system was selected as an experimental model. Finite element models of bone/implant/prosthesis complex were constructed. A load of 300 N was applied vertically beside 3 mm of implant axis. Results: The pattern of stress distribution according to marginal bone resorption was similar. The maximum equivalent stress of implant was increase according to marginal bone resorption and the largest maximum equivalent stress was shown at model of 1 mm marginal bone resorption. Although marginal bone loss more than 1mm was occurred increasing of stress, the width of the stress increase was decreasing. Conclusion: According to these results, the exposure of thin neck portion of internal conical joint type implant is most important factor in stress increasing.

  • In order to examine the unsaturated shear strength characteristics of compacted weathered gneiss soils, the constant water content compression (CWCC) test was carried out. Specimens were made by static compaction under two densities conditions. The shear behavior in accordance with an initial suction obtained by varying initial degrees of saturation was evaluated. The suction could be directly measured by the use of the ceramic disk and the pore-water pressure transducer. The results of the peak shear strength from the CWCC test were examined using the relationship with Mp line from triaxial test under the saturated state, that is, by means of the suction stress which was calculated using the measured suction. In addition, the applicability of the suctions stress to the unsaturated shear behaviour of compacted weathered gneiss soils was discussed by applying Suction stress-SWCC Method (SSM).
