In this study, we developed and characterized the shielding properties of dose reduction fiber (DRF, Buffalo Co.) sheet during brain and chest CT examinations. The DRF sheet was composed of $1{\sim}500{\mu}m$ oxide Bismuth ($Bi_2O_3$) and 5 ~ 50 nm nano-barium sulfate ($BaSO_4$). Phantom and clinical studies were performed for characterization of the DRF shielding properties. In clinical study, we measured doses of eye, chest, abdomen and reproductive system of 60 patients in 3 hospitals during brain and chest CT examinations. We could determined the shielding effect of the DRF by comparing the doses when we used the DRF sheet or not. When we used the sheet during CT examination, the scattered dose were reduced about 20~50%. So, we suggest that the fiber should be used in radiological examinations for reducing patients doses.

In this study, scattering factors affecting the quality of medical images were quantitatively analyzed and investigated. MCNPX simulation was conducted by using ANSI phantom, made of tissue equivalent materials, to calculate the scattering ratio occurred by the increase of the object thickness. Then, the result of the simulation was compared with the result of actual radiation measurement. In addition, we evaluated the image quality by the RMS evaluation, RSD and NPS analysis using X-ray images acquired with increasing object thickness. Furthermore, the scattering ratio was analyzed by increasing the thickness of acrylic phantom on chest phantom. The result showed that the scattering ratio was increased to 57.2%, 62.4%, and 66.8% from 48.9%, respectively, when the acrylic phantom thickness was increased by 1 inch from 6.1 inches. The results of MCNPX simulation and the actual measured scattering dose showed similar results. Also, as a result of RMS measurement from acquired x-ray images, the standard deviation decreased as the object thickness increased. However, in the RSD analysis considering the average incident dose, the results were increased from 0.028 to 0.039, 0.051, 0.062 as the acrylic phantom thickness was increased from 6.1 inches to 7.1 inch, 8.1 inch, and 9.1 inch, respectively. It can be seen that the increase of the scattering effect due to the increase of the object thickness reduces the SNR. Also, the NPS results obtained by measuring scattered radiation incident on the detector resulted in the increase of the noise as the object thickness increased.

Purpose: In Asan Medical Center, Two parallel opposite beams are employed for total body irradiation. Patients are required to be in supine position where two arms are attached to mid axillary line. Normally, physical compensators are required to compensate the large dose difference for different parts of body due to the different thicknesses compared to the umbilicus separation. There was the maximum dose difference up to 30% in lung and chest wall compared to the prescription dose. In order to resolve the dose discrepancy occurring on different body regions, the feasibility of using Fieid-in-Field Technique is investigated in this study. Materials and Methods: CT scan was performed to The RANDO Phantom with fabricated two arms and sent to Eclipse treatment planning system (version 10.0, Varian, USA). Conventional plan with physical lead compensator and new plan using Field-in-Field Technique were established on TPS. AAA (Anisotropic Analytical Algorithm) dose calculation algorithm was employed for two parallel opposite beams attenuation. Results: The dose difference between two methods was compared with the prescription dose. The dose distribution of chest and anterior chest wall uncovered by patient arms was 114~124% for physical lead compensator while Field-in-Field Technique gave 106~107% of the dose distribution. In-vivo dosimetry result using TLD showed that the dose distribution to the same region was 110~117% for conventional physical compensator and 104~107% for Field-in-Field Technique. Conclusion: In this study, the feasibility of using FIF technique has been investigated with fabricated arms attached Rando phantom. The dose difference was up to 17% due to the attached arms. It is shown that the dose homogeneity is within ${\pm}10%$ with the CT based 3-dimensional 4 step FIF technique. The in-vivo dosimetry result using TLD was showed that 95~107% dose distribution compared to prescription dose. It is considered that CT based 3-dimensional Field-in-Field Technique for the total body irradiation gives much homogeneous dose distribution for different body parts than the conventional physical compensator method and might be useful to evaluate the dose on each part of patient body.
The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the effect of changes in the patient's central position on the exposure dose and image quality of surrounding organs during a chest lateral examination using an Auto Exposure Control(AEC). The experiment was conducted on a human body phantom. A needle was attached to the lower part of the center of the coronal plane of the phantom, and a lead ruler was attached to the lower part of the detector so that the 50 cm point was located at the lower center of the AEC ion chamber. The exposure conditions were 125 kVp, 320 mA, the distance between the source and the image receptor was 180 cm, and the exposure field size was 14 × 17 inches. Only one AEC ion chamber was used at the bottom center, and the density was set to '0' and sensitivity to 'Middle', and the central X-ray was incident vertically toward the 6th thoracic vertebra. With AEC mode applied, the 50 cm point of the needle and lead ruler were aligned and the phantom was moved 5 cm toward the stomach (F5) and 5 cm toward the back (B5), and the dose factor was analyzed by measuring ESD. The ESD of the thyroid gland according to the change in patient center position was 232.60±2.20 μGy for Center, 231.22±1.53 μGy for F5, and 184.37±1.19 μGy for B5, and the ESD of the breast was 288.54±3.03 μGy for Center, F5 was 260.97±1.93 μGy, B5 was 229.80±1.62 μGy, and the ESD of the center of the lung was 337.02±3.25 μGy for Center, F5 was 336.09±2.29 μGy, and B5 was 261.76±1.68 μGy. As a result of comparing the average values of dose factors between each group, the difference in average values was statistically significant (p<0.01), and each group appeared to be independent. As a result of the study, there was no significant difference in the dose to the thyroid, breast, and center of the lung according to the change in the patient's central position, except for the breast (10%) when the patient moved forward about 5 cm. However, movement of about 5 cm posteriorly resulted in an average dose reduction of 23.7%. Additionally, when the patient's central position was moved to the rear, image quality deteriorated.

Recently, digital tomosynthesis system (DTS) has been developed to reduce overlap using conventional X-ray and to overcome high patient dose problem using computed tomography (CT). The purpose of this study was to develop image reconstruction algorithm and to evaluate image characteristics and dose with chest digital tomosynthesis (CDT) system. Image reconstruction was used for filtered back-projection (FBP) methods and system geometry was constructed ${\pm}10^{\circ}$, ${\pm}15^{\circ}$, ${\pm}20^{\circ}$, and ${\pm}30^{\circ}$ angular range for acquiring phantom images. Image characteristics carried out root mean square error (RMSE) and signal difference-to-noise ratio (SDNR), and dose is evaluated effective dose with ${\pm}20^{\circ}$ angular range. According to the results, the phantom image with slice thickness filter has superb RMSE and SDNR, and effective dose was 0.166 mSv. In conclusion, we demonstrated usefulness of developed CDT image reconstruction algorithm and we constructed CDT basic output data with measuring effective dose.

In diagnostic medical imaging, it is essential to reduce the scattered radiation for the high medical image quality and low patient dose. Therefore, in this study, the influence of the scattered radiation on medical images was analyzed as the tube voltage increases. For this purpose, ANSI chest phantom was used to measure the scattering ratio, and the scattering effect on the image quality was investigated by RMS evaluation, RSD and NPS analysis. It was found that the scattering ratio with increasing x-ray tube voltage gradually increased to 48.8% at 73 kV tube voltage and to 80.1% at 93 kV tube voltage. As a result of RMS analysis for evaluating the image quality, RMS value according to increase of tube voltage was increased, resulting in low image quality. Also, the NPS value at 2.5 lp/mm spatial frequency was increased by 20% when the tube voltage was increased by 93 kV compared to the tube voltage of 73 kV. From this study, it can be seen that the scattering radiation have a significant effect on the image quality according to the increase of x-ray tube voltage. The results of this study can be used as basic data for the improvement of medical imaging quality.

ROC(Receiver Operating Characteristic)curve is the method that estimate detected insignificant signal from the human's sense of sight, it has been raised excellent results. In this study, we evaluate image quality and equipment character by obtaining a chest image from CR(Computed Radiography) and DDR(Direct Digital radiography) using the human chest phantom, The parameter of exposure for obtaining chest image was 120 kVp/3.2 mAs and the SID(Source to Image Distance) was 180cm. The images were obtained by CR(AGFA MD 4.0 General plate, JAPAN) and DDR(HOLOGIC nDirect Ray, USA). Using some pieces of Aluminum and stone for expressing regions, then attached them on the heart, lung and thoracic vertebrae of the phantom. 29 persons hold radiology degrees were participated in ROC analysis. As a result of the ROC analysis, TPF(true positive fraction) and FPF(false positive fraction) of DDR and CR are 0.552 and 0.474 and 0.629 and 0.405, respectively. By using the results, the ROC curve of CR has higher image quality than DDR. According to the theory, DDR has the higher image quality than CR in chest X-ray image. But, CR has the higher image quality than DDR. quality of DDR inserted the enhance board. The results confirmed that image post-processing is important element decipherment of clinical.
The objective of this study was to compare the resolution and density appropriate to diagnosis in chest PA radiography. In comparing the resolution, we radiographed with conventional radiography, computed radiography(CR) and digital radiography(DR) using the linear resolution phantom(Nuclear Associates-Carle Place. N.Y.). 2 radiologists and 3 radiological technologists read the resolution value by the blind test. DR, conventional radiography and CR measured 3.95, 3.58, 3.48 resolution value respectively. In analysing the density, we chose the fifty normal chest CR and DR and conventional film. We estimated the density using by densitometer(X-rite company-Model 301) in seven regions(lung field, lung field margine, mediastinum I, mediastinum II, heart shadow I, heart shadow II, diaphragm) of chest film. We adapted to analysis the Japanese chest X-ray evaluating method and table. It was scored 0(farthest density value) to 2(nearest density value). DR scored 2 at mediastinum I, mediastinum II, heart shadow I, heart shadow II and diaphragm. On the contrary with, CR scored 2 at lung field and lung field margine. Consequently, DR superior than CR and conventional radiography film compairing density and resolution. It was due to small pixel size and post processing algorithm with digital radiography.
This study is to confirm the range of tube voltage for Chest X-ray in DR system by comparing with dose area product (DAP) and effective dose in efficient detector exposure index (DEI) range. GE definium 8000 was used to for the phantom study. The range of tube voltage is 60~130 kVp and of mAs is 2.5~40 mAs. The acquired images were classified into efficient DEI groups, then calculated effective dose with DAP by using a PC-Based Monte Carlo Program 2.0. The signal to noise ratio (SNR) was measured at 4 regions, including the thoracic spine, the lung area with the ribs, the lung area without the ribs, and the liver by using Picture Archiving and Communication System. The significance of the group for each tube voltage was verified by performing the kruskal-wallis test and the mann-whitney test as a post-test. When set to 4 groups dependned on the tube voltage, DAP showed significant differences; 60 kVp and 80 kVp, and 60 kVp and 90 kVp (p= 0.034, 0.021). Effective dose exhibited no statistically significant differences from the all of the group (p>0.05). SNR exhibited statistically significant differences from the all of the group in the liver except compared to 80 kVp and 90 kVp (p<0.05). Therefore, high tube voltages of 100 kVp or more need to be reconsidered in terms of patient dose and imaging in order to represent an appropriate chest X-ray image in a digital system.
This study is filmed by applying the axial angle variation of the X-ray tube instead of the patient's position change during the perimetric examination of the ribs. A Reference image with the rib oblique examination using a chest phantom and experimental images applied with a six-phase variation in the axial angle by increasing $5^{\circ}$ tube angle each from $5^{\circ}{\sim}30^{\circ}$ from the vertical incident direction of the chest phantom to the right horizontal axis were obtained. For the quantitative comparative evaluation of the images, SNR and CNR were calculated for regions of interest in the experimental images based on the reference image. Also, the left-right rib ratio in the reference image and the left-right rib ratio in the experimental images are measured and compared. As a result of the study, the experimental images with a tube angle of $25^{\circ}$ were best shown in the measurements of the SNR, CNR and left-right rib ratio compared to the reference image with a standard examination method. The modified rib examinations will consider useful, if it is difficult to maintain the patient's examination position.
