Purpose: This study was conducted to describe the state of middle school students' addicted use of a cellular phone and their psychosocial characteristics and to examine differences in psychosocial factors as impulsivity, stress, anxiety and classroom attitudes according to the level of addiction. Method: As the subjects of this study, 747 middle school students who use a cellular phone in B Metropolitan City were selected through stratified random sampling, and they were asked to answer a self-administered study questionnaire. Data were analyzed using frequency, descriptive statistics, $x^2-test$, t-test, and one-way ANOVA. Results Among the respondents, 15.7% fell into the addicted user group while 56.0% fell into the dependent user group and 28.3% turned out to be non-addicted users. The levels of impulsivity, stress and anxiety were higher in the addicted user group than in the dependent user group and the non-addicted user group. The addicted user group also showed a very bad learning attitude. Conclusion: Addiction to the use of a cellular phone, which may have negative influences on the users' psychosocial characteristics, needs to be detected earlier, and preventive education should be offered in order to prevent such addiction.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of depression, stress, and self-efficacy on the addiction to cell phone use among university students. Methods: Data were collected through questionnaires from 563 students and analyzed by applying descriptive statistics, t-test, ${\chi}^2$ test, and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 16.0. Results: The proportion of depressed subjects was 52.6%. The addictive group scored higher than the non-addictive group in depression rate and stress, but scored lower in self-efficacy. Out of the subjects, 32.9% were found to be addictive users, 31.3% at potential risk, and 1.6% at high risk. Significant variables influencing addictive users were stress, self-efficacy, and the user's general characteristics including monthly spending money, sex, the hours of daily use, and the main method of use. Conclusion: It is concluded that such variables leading university students to the addiction of cell phone use.
Objective : This study aims to investigate the relationship between addictive mobile phone use and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in bullies who experienced school violence. Methods : The study subjects consisted of 97 adolescents in The Foundation for Preventing Youth Violence after school violence. The participants conducted self-report questionnaire for addictive mobile phone use and Impacted Event Scale-revised-Korean version (IES-R-K). Partial correlation and multiple logistic regressions were performed. Results : The scores related to addictive mobile phone use were correlated with total score (r=0.21, p=0.04), avoidance score (r=0.21, p=0.04) and intrusive score (r=0.26, p=0.01) related to PTSD symptoms on the IES-R-K. Intrusive score related to PTSD symptoms on the IES-R-K were significant risk factor for addictive mobile phone use (O.R=1.25, 95% CI=1.12-1.39). Conclusion : This data supports that PTSD intrusive symptoms could be predictable factor of addictive mobile phone use. An appropriate intervention about PTSD symptoms might play a useful role in preventing addictive mobile phone use in bullies of school violence.
The purposes of this study were to investigate the actual conditions and deal with the psychological characteristics of adolescent cellular phone addicts through the Minnesota Multiphase Personality Inventory (MMPI). The subjects of this study were 407 senior high school students (male 185, female 222) in 2nd grade in Daegu. The cellular phone addiction inventory (CPAI) was designed on the basis of an interview process, referring to the Young's Internet Addiction Self Diagnosis Scale. SPSS version 10.0 was employed for data analysis. The mean score of the adolescent addict group was significantly higher than the non-addict group in Scale Pd, Pa, Pt, Sc and Ma. This result indicates that the cellular phone addict group is likely to suffer from more serious pathological disorders than the non-addict group. The rate of addictive adolescents was significantly higher in the addict group than in the non-addict group in psychological problematic score ranges in Scale Sc (Schizophrenia) and Ma (Hypomania). The study result suggests that adolescents who addictively use a cellular phone will be more likely to show immaturity, instability, impulsive personality, excessive activities, and escapism.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the influences of stress, loneliness, self-control on the addiction of cell phone use among university students. Methods: Data were collected through questionnaires from 467 students and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson's correlation coefficients and Stepwise multiple regression analysis with SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. Results: Out of the subjects, 1.5% were found to be addiction group, 89.9% at potential risk group, and 8.6% at non-addiction group. Addiction of cell phone use was significantly correlated with stress, loneliness and self-control. The influential factors affecting addiction of cell phone use over use problem, self-control, health problem, main using method and stress, which explained about 25.6% of the variance. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that nursing intervention are needed to improve addiction of cell phone use, and that such variables should be carefully considered in intervention for university students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the degrees of cellular phone usage among middle school students and to identify discriminating factors of addictive use of cellular phones among socio-demographic and psychological variables. Methods: From 123 middle schools in Busan, potential participants were identified through stratified random sampling and 747 middle school students participated in the study. The data was collected from December 1, 2004 to December 30, 2004. Descriptive and discriminant analyses were used. Results: Fifty seven percent of the participants were male and 89.7% used cellular phones at school. The participants were grouped into three groups depending on the levels of the cellular phone usage: addicted (n=117), dependent (n=418), non-addicted (n=212). Within the three groups, two functions were produced and only one function was significant, discriminating the addiction group from non-addiction group. Additional discriminant analysis with only two groups produced one function that classified 81.2% of the participants correctly into the two groups. Impulsiveness, anxiety, and stress were significant discriminating factors. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, developing intervention programs focusing on impulsiveness, anxiety and stress to reduce the possible addictive use of cellular phones is suggested.
